What’s The Plan?

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit.

So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating.

I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be

spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own.

From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance.

Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)

to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps.

They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed.

I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow.

Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

Balancing all the aspects of college living may prove difficult for many students.

Whether that student is a freshman or a senior, keeping it all together is no easy task.

Transitioning to living alone is a struggle in itself. Throw in advanced courses, a social life, athletics and extracurriculars, and any student will be feeling the pressure.

As a freshman at Villanova University, I know just how demanding the life of a college student is. Sure, there is a ton of free time, but it is occupied by doing homework, laundry or other tasks. My clubs and societies further complicate my daily routine. My schedule gets even tougher once rugby starts up again.

It’s important to keep on top of things before they snowball and magnify. It’s crucial to be preemptive and proactive. Time management is a highly valued trait in any

college student. The ability to be one step ahead of the game allows a student more time to accomplish tasks and finish early.

Although college is meant to develop students, I find that it really just tests them. I’ve learned a lot about Business, Theology and English, but I’ve learned way more about myself. Going into college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. I wasn’t confident in my competence to live away from home. I had no idea what was coming. Yet, I’ve successfully made it to the second semester.

I’m really looking forward to what the rest of my college career can offer me. I’m excited for what is coming my way. With any luck, I will excel in college - and in the rest of my life. I really love it here at Villanova, and I only hope I can make everyone proud.

With a victory in the final game on January 13th, the East Islip Middle School girls volleyball team finished its 20142015 season undefeated.

Cordara first came across the idea for an MLK-themed “salad” idea online more than eight years ago, and shared it with Murphy. “We have been making it every year since then to celebrate Dr. King,” Cordara said. “It is more meaningful and fun to come together with another class and make new friends, and we teach the children that it is not what we look like on the outside, but rather what is in our hearts that matters.”

At Islip’s Wing Elementary School, kindergartners from the classrooms of teachers Valerie Cordara and Lori Murphy joined together to enjoy a novel tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. on January 16th, culminating in a “rainbow salad.”

Tournaments Expanded With a record 135 teams and over 2,000 students participating this year, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that another round has been added to its FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments. The threeday tournament will take place on January 24th25th at Central Islip High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip and January 31st, 2015 at Mineola

This year’s challenge is FLL World Class, in which children in elementary and middle school will work on ways to improve the learning experience of others on a topic of their choice using technology.

The FLL Tournament is an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors.
