How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island?

On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new

families to the benefits of a Catholic education.

These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week.

Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well.

First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school.

Bayport-Blue Point Women Athletes Win Suffolk Titles Islip, NY – Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, along with members of the Town Board, recognized the women of the Bayport-Blue Point Varsity Field Hockey and Volleyball teams, for earning the Suffolk County Championship Titles in both sports recently.

This was the second consecutive win for the women’s volleyball team, and the first for the field hockey team.

“Congratulations to both teams on your accomplishments,” said Coucilwoman Mullen. The councilwoman, whose daughter plays on the field hockey team, said the 1-0

win for the title was a nail biter.

“We are so proud of you here within the Town of Islip, and I know the whole Bayport-Bluepoint community is extremely proud. You have brought on a whole new era of young girls who want to play field hockey,” said the Councilwoman.

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him.

“After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.”

Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area

of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp.

He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind.

Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East.

While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone.

In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations.

Performance by local dancers raises $4,750 to help families of children with congenital heart defects

Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry.

The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China.

In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season.

This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25.

Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using fireworks,

and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics.

Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward.

Some other traditions associated with the holiday include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes thoroughly prior to the dawn of the new year, welcoming family for a big reunion and avoiding activities deemed to be taboo. Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. Children receive money tucked inside of red envelopes to help transfer fortune from elders to younger generations. In addition to red envelopes, homes and decorations are adorned in red. The red color was purported to be instrumental in scaring

away Nian and bringing about luck.

Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life.

The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

The original production raised $4,750 for the charity, which will be used to offer financial assistance and support for these families in need.

Gavin’s Got Heart helps to subsidize medical bills, travel expenses associated with hospitalizations and medical care, and offset loss of wages for caregiver/ parent(s). To date Gavin’s Got Heart has donated over $315,000 to 63 local heart families. Gavin’s Got Heart also provides free heart screenings, and CPR/AED training for the community through a partnership with Northwell Health and provides hospital outreach initiatives for heart families.

The cast of 38 people worked to put the show together beginning in late September, with an

original script by Colleen M. Hughes, choreography by the Dance Connection Teaching Staff, and directed by Mary DeBorger.

They were thrilled to be brought together after the holidays to present Nicole Mogil, the founder of Gavin’s Got Heart with the $4,750 raised by their efforts.

Founded in September 1989, Dance Connection is an Islip based company whose mission is to create a welcoming and fun setting for proper performing arts education.
