Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong. My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration. For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family. My little brother is the reason why I strive for

greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness. My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine. There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in

us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

The Town of Islip Youth Bureau and their youth service agency, South Shore Community Organization have joined forces with local School Districts, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Keep Islip Clean to collect jeans for the national “Teens For Jeans” Program. With tough economic times, more families have less to spend on everything, including basic necessities like clothing. The Islip Youth Bureau is encouraging residents, community and school groups, and businesses to support the efforts of the Islip Youth Bureau and the Teens for Jeans program by donating new or used, jeans in good condition (any size) at one of the local drop-off sites before February 14th, 2014. Winter Concerts Held East Islip High School’s Rydzeski Hall was aglow with the sights and sounds of inspiring musical performances as the school held its annual winter concerts on December 17th and 18th. The first concert featured the honors symphony orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski. After opening with the overture from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” the orchestra played the theme from “The Polar Express” and Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave.” Under the direction of Bethany Affelt, the East Islip High School Honors Choir sang traditional Zulu dowry song “Amavolovolo,” a selection of five Hebrew love songs accompanied by a string quartet, and a medley of “Carol of the Bells” and “Deck the Halls.” The singers closed with Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children,” dedicated to the families and communities of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Ending the first night, the school’s wind ensemble, led by director Christopher Neske, played Samuel Barber’s “Commando March”; Newell Long’s “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” narrated by Peter McDermott; and Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy.” At the second of the pair of concerts, the evening kicked

off with the string orchestra, directed by Alyssa Sciarrino, who performed the finale of Mozart’s Divertimento No. 13, the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Affelt then led the women’s choir and concert choir. The former began with “African Processional,” featuring

Erin Fitzgerald and Katie Ginty, sophomore Ashley Karlin, and juniors Samantha Sampollo and Alyssa Stephens – while “Kol Han’shamah” was sung in Hebrew and incorporated rhythmic hand claps. They closed with upbeat holiday classic “Jingle Bell Rock.” The concert choir opened with the Puerto Rican carol “Saludo, Saludo” before moving on to “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent,” featuring vocal solos from sophomore Catherine Graber and junior Edward Yankus. Next up was “The Little Drummer Boy,” followed by “Tikkun Olam,” sung in Hebrew as well as English and featuring freshman Vinny Altman and sophomore Veronica Saager. Ending the night and the winter concert series, the East Islip High School Concert Band and director Neske performed Claude T. Smith’s “Emperata Overture,” “Chorale and Bell Carol” arranged by John Moss and G.K. Walth’s Symphonic Dance No. 3 “Fiesta.”

ASHTON found in a litter of orphan babies, now 6 months-old; likes other cats East Islip High School living environment teacher Cliff Ruggiero gives his students a major project every quarter, usually revolving around a specific topic they cover in class. For the first quarter this year, he assigned what he likes to call “the infamous cell model project.” Students are tasked with designing a model of either an animal cell or a plant cell, either as an edible cake “cell” or a 3-D model version, and this batch yielded a project of uncommon quality from sophomore Erica Budovsky. “On the day the projects are due, I am always eager to see the different cell models and the creative ideas my students came up with to design their cells,” explained Ruggiero. “This year was one of the

best – the students did an excellent job creating, designing and crafting unique projects. However, one particular student’s work stood out from any year that I had given the project.” According to Ruggiero, many students and teachers alike were surprised to find out that it was made by a 10th-grade student, and some of his colleagues even thought that he had bought Budovsky’s model cells from a science catalog. “Erica is a bright and talented student, so when she came in with her project it was with no surprise that she had done above and beyond what was asked of her,” said Ruggiero. “The students were only asked to do one cell model, but had the option of doing a second one for extra credit – Erica

did both.” Most of the material for Budovsky’s project came from around her house, and both of her cells were constructed from Styrofoam. She used clay and Play-Doh to create most of the organelles, or cell parts. The platforms that the “cells” were displayed on were made of wood that she sanded and painted, and the labels for the parts were typed up and laminated. “I can’t say enough about how proud I am of Erica and her ability to craft such an amazing 3-D cell model,” said Ruggiero. “I will be using her model to show future classes and look forward to grading her work on other projects.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Citizens Advisory Board Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conflict, concerns and issues regarding the

Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DeMarco called the initiative an important

first step in “preserving public trust in county law enforcement,” which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny in the past year. The first meeting will be held in early February and the Board will be tasked with the following responsibilities: • Provide annual reviews to the Sheriff

concerning complaints and testimony from the community related to operations, policies and standard operating procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. • Review and comment on programs to promote, aid and encourage community input. • Review and comment on the development

Fitness Award Honorees

Islip High School students Kieran Mullins and Vanessa Juengerkes were honored as Suffolk Zone award recipients at a dinner sponsored by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, held at the Hyatt Regency on December 4th. The criteria for achieving this award are: exceptional physical performance, scholastic ability, and outstanding character and leadership qualities in both physical education and other school-based activities. These students contribute to the overall

positive outcomes of their physical education classes as well as the school. Kieran excels in physical education and as a threesport athlete in varsity football, basketball and lacrosse. “He is a true leader in physical education and serves as a role model in class,” said Bob Panariello, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. Kieran is a member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society and will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Throughout her high

school career, Vanessa has maintained a 99 average while serving as captain of the varsity volleyball, basketball and softball teams. “Vanessa excels in both physical education and athletics, and her teachers describe her as a leader and highly motivated student,” said Mr. Panariello. Vanessa is a member of the National Honor Society, Athletes Helping Athletes, SADD and Habitat for Humanity. She plans to attend Dowling College in the fall, where she will continue her softball career.

They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean...
