Digging Pink For Charity

slip Middle School’s Girls’ Volleyball team held a Dig Pink game on January 9th, raising $500 for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. The fundraiser included sales of Dig Pink T-shirts, as well as baked goods made by the students and their families. The team members also created colorful posters during the holiday break, which were displayed around the school to advertise the event.

Creative Cups To Return On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life Is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains.

These and 174 other Creative Cups will be auctioned on Thursday, March 19th, at 6 p.m. at Adelphi University’s University Center in Garden City. NBC’s Pat Battle, a breast cancer survivor herself, again will host the event. To date, chief sponsors are Leviton Foundation and Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. Keep Islip Clean marked its 25th Anniversary in December with a celebration hosted by the Seatuck Environmental Association at the historic Scully Estate in Islip. Over 125 volunteers and supporters toasted KIC’s quarter century of keeping every hamlet in the Town of Islip clean, green and litter-free. Former Chairman Bill Johnston and his wife Gloria were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 20 years of service, by

KIC’s incoming Chairman, Kay Erwood. In addition to Mrs. Erwood, other Executive Board officers were sworn in by Judge Lawrence Donohue (retired). East Islip Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Keenan triumphed in the annual school wide spelling bee for the second year in a row, beating fellow eight-grade student Julia Desiderio with the word “nebula” after numerous nail-biting final rounds. Emma McGaugh finished

in third place. The 26-round event, which included 42 participants, was the qualifying round for the local edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with students competing to represent East Islip at the local edition of the national bee, to be held on February

8th at Hofstra University. “The spelling bee was action-packed this year,” said English teacher Ann Mingione. “Our classroom winners successfully spelled a multitude of challenging words and we congratulate all of the participants.”

Honor Flight Support The East Islip Middle School Builders Club, guided by teacher Rena Costello, participated in a recent special event honoring World War II veterans who took part in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. last September. These patriotic students helped distribute photo scrapbooks that were created and customized

for each veteran from the September flight. Phil Bates, a member of the Honor Flight Long Island Board of Directors, organized the Honor Flight reunion event, whose audience was comprised of the aforementioned veterans, their families and the guardians who had escorted them on the Honor Flight, as well as prior Honor Flight attendees.

East Islip’s Superintendent Linda J. Rozzi was also in attendance Bates’ wife, Tina, brought along her Girl Scouts Cadette Troop 2137, who hosted the welcome table, while two other members of the Builders Club, Jacob Arens and Lucas Bates, manned the refreshment table.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York

City. Children on firsttime visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Recycle Rush More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New Yorkarea schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 3rd for School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc.’s (SBPLI) kickoff of the Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2015 robotics game called “RECYCLE RUSHSM.” “FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST

Founder. “Kids often come in not knowing what to expect — of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.” RECYCLE RUSHSM is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. In addition, SBPLI

held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made

up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 26th28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by SBPLI, which has also
