During this holiday season, members of East Islip High School’s varsity softball team shopped for 12 Amityville children who currently live in homeless shelters.

The softball players met at Target, where they received a “Dear Santa” list from coach Jason McGowan, and shopped until their Christmas list was filled. The event was sponsored by the Christmas Magic program.

“I loved shopping for my kid,” said senior Courtney Greene.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that he woke up Christmas morning with a bunch of toys.”

“I had a great time shopping for my person and I hope she liked the clothes that I picked out for her,” said senior Jackie Carty.

Stevens, the band tackled a sprightly selection of holiday classics at each stop, which included the Connetquot and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools; the district office, where they performed for administrators; and the Early Childhood Center,

where they played for students of the South Shore Preschool for Early Childhood Education.

At each site, Stevens also presented a brief history and demonstration of all the band instruments.

On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration.

Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration.

There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;

President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts.

In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide.

President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017.

We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford.

This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals.

January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity.

Benjamin, 18, of East Islip, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corp Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. on October 28th, 2016. PFC Benjamin successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD, Parris Island, as one of 81 recruits in Training Platoon 1085. While in basic training, PFC Benjamin qualified Expert Shooter, finished 1st Class in PFT, 1st Class in CFT, mastered a Tan Belt in MCMAP, qualified 3rd in Class in swimming, and was meritoriously promoted. How’s it Going?

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year.

Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run.

Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently.

Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely.

And then there are the roads.

Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter.

Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it.

Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward.

There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough.

Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

treats, the students wrote Christmas and Hanukkah cards for disabled veterans. The cards were given to the Islip American Legion Auxiliary Unit 411 for delivery to several veterans

Pair of Leaders East Islip High School seniors Loren Borelli and Chris Higgins were honored as winners at the 2016-2017 Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held on December 7th at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge.

The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance presents these awards annually to the top male and

female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class.

Winning students are chosen for their strong contributions to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school, and must fulfill rigorous criteria including an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, an overall grade point

average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year and demonstrations of outstanding character and leadership qualities.

“Lauren and Chris are leaders in their physical education classes and possess characteristics such as integrity, compassion, leadership and a great work ethic,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.
