We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book.

There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede.

This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment.

Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better?

I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple.

And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal.

Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Two dozen East Islip High School students enrolled in teacher Jovina Bratta’s advanced American Sign Language program visited Christine Cirillo’s fourth-grade class at John F. Kennedy

Elementary School on December 18th for over an hour of celebratory singing and signing.

The two groups of students sang holiday songs together, and the high schoolers taught the

younger students signs and the ASL alphabet, followed by an engaging interactive game that served to enforce both receptive and expressive signing skills.

Lighting the Loop The Islip Chamber of Commerce recently honored the late Jeannette Feminella, beloved former principal of Commack Road Elementary School, by recognizing her achievements through

their annual Light the Night event in December.

With support from the district, Commack Road teacher Debra Scheel organized a team of Islip employees who had worked with Feminella

throughout the years. The group worked to display candles throughout the school’s bus loop; as Scheel said, “Our plan was to fill the bus loop with ‘light’ in Jeannette’s memory.”

A Touch of Spring said KIC’s Executive Director Nancy Cochran.

“You can imagine my surprise when a UPS truck rolled up and unloaded 35 crates of daffodil bulbs. I’m so grateful for Dutch Grown’s amazing generosity,” she added.

KIC Commissioners Kathy and Bob VanDyke led a volunteer group, which planted about 3,000 of the bulbs at Islip Beach.

The remainder were given to groups throughout Islip, including the West Islip Beautification Society, the Common Ground in

Sayville, the American Legion and community groups in Brentwood, Central Islip and Oakdale.

Dutch Grown sells a wide array of flowers, but chose to donate daffodil varieties, because they are KIC’s official flower, as featured on the organization’s logo. Islip residents can anticipate a daffodil enhanced spring thanks to the volunteers who slipped on gardening gloves, grabbed shovels and planted thousands of bulbs.

Islip High School’s varsity basketball team recently honored a respected former senior captain, welcoming a huge crowd to the second annual Anil John Tip-Off Classic.

John, a three-year varsity basketball player and member of Islip’s Class of 2015, lost his life in a tragic accident on October 6th, 2015. After John’s death, his uniform number

22 was retired forever in the basketball program, and the team collaborated with the Islip Booster Club to rename their annual tournament. A memorial scholarship in John’s name was also established, funded with tournament T-shirt sales.

“From the students to coaches, teams, teachers, administrators, food services staff, custodians

and community members, just about everyone comes together to remember Anil,” said Athletic Director John Sparacio.

“He inspired and touched the hearts of everyone who met him. He had a great passion for Islip athletics and basketball and is forever our teammate and friend.”

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.
