Christmas Magic East Islip High School’s varsity softball team and coach Jason McGowan met up at a local Target store before the holidays to participate in the team’s annual shopping extravaganza for the nonprofit Christmas Magic program, coordinated by Hauppauge attorney Charlie Russo.

In conjunction with the Amityville High School WAC PAC, a student leadership program coordinated by McGowan, teens shopped for 84 underprivileged children who attend a daycare center in Middle Island. Each athlete, shopping for two to three children, was given a $100 bill and a

handwritten “Dear Santa” list filled with clothing, toys and electronics. “I loved shopping for my little girl,” said student Ashley Benvengo. “It felt good knowing that she woke up Christmas morning and had a bunch of toys.”

Heartwarming Concert

The sounds of the season filled East Islip High School’s Rydzeski Hall on December 21st and 22nd, as stellar young musicians displayed talents earned over years of practice at two remarkable winter concerts. The material ranged far and wide, from classical pieces by Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky, to traditional Jewish and Puerto Rican songs and the familiar themes from “Star Wars.” The first night featured the string orchestra, directed by Susan W. Rydzeski; the women’s choir, directed by Bethany Affelt; the concert choir, directed by John Patrick Murphy; and the concert band, directed by Christopher Neske. Showcased during the second evening were the honors symphony orchestra, directed by Rydzeski; the honors choir, directed by Affelt; and the honors wind ensemble, directed by Neske. “This holiday season,

our students exhibited professionalism with a performance that moved and engaged the audience, from the light show of our string orchestra, to the heartwarming delivery of the honors choir,” said Robert Wottawa, the

district’s director of art and music. “The success of these concerts is due to the hard work and dedication of not only our students, but our outstanding teachers who maintain high expectations during daily rehearsals.”

Community Health Needs The Long Island Health Collaborative is calling for your participation in an anonymous survey, because the health of your community depends on it. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is a voluntary coalition that includes the Nassau and Suffolk County Departments of Health, Long Island hospitals and community-based organizations, among others. LIHC members are committed to improving the health of Long Islanders and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play. The Community Health Assessment Survey was designed specifically for residents of Long Island.

By distributing surveys through their vast network of locally ingrained organizations, the LIHC is accessing the voices of all communities, including the underserved. Survey results will be used to help target health needs of individual communities and design specific programs to address these needs. “The survey takes less than five minutes to complete, and includes personalized questions like, ‘What are the biggest ongoing health concerns for yourself?’ and, ‘What is most needed to improve the health of your community?’” says Program Manager Sarah Ravenhall, who is

overseeing the distribution and collection of the survey. “Community member responses will be used to give us a broad view of what problems are most significant within communities. As residents, this is an opportunity to ensure our voices are being heard. Seniors Alexa Mattera and William Reed were recently named as East Islip High School winners of the 2015-2016 Suffolk Zone Awards, presented annually to the top male and female physical education students in each high school’s graduating class. Mattera and Reed were honored by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and

Dance at a December 2nd awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. This school year, 58 high schools in the county were represented at the Suffolk Zone awards and 116 award recipients were chosen. The students were selected for contributing strongly to the overall positive tone of their physical education classes as well as the school. Among the criteria for the award are earning an A average or

above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of junior year, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership qualities and being a role model for good health and physical fitness. “Alexa and Will are true leaders in their class and have made an impact,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. East Islip High School recently held its first “Elective Expo” in the school cafeteria, providing students in grades 8-12 an opportunity to learn about the different elective classes offered by the high school. Teachers and students manned tables, and video production students, under the supervision of teacher James Connell, created a video to showcase each of the electives and demonstrate what students learn and do in these courses. The school’s vaunted Career Academy program was

also featured, and parents and students who were interested in learning more about the program were able to speak with Career Academy teachers and students who are currently enrolled in the academies. The Elective Expo evening was the culmination of meetings held throughout the current school year by the newly formed Career Academy Committee, led by Principal William Brennen and Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. The committee was created by Alise Becker-Santa, the district’s

assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, for the purpose of bringing East Islip’s elective courses and the Career Academies to the forefront. “Parents and students walked around and were able to make better educational decisions as to what classes the students would like to enroll in for the next school year,” said Malinowitzer. “The teachers were delighted to take part in the event and are already looking forward to planning next year’s Elective Expo.”

Commended Students Islip High School seniors Mackenzie Dymek and Larry Saperstein have been recognized as Commended Students by the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, based on their exceptional results on the

2014 preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Dymek and Saperstein finished among the top 5 percent nationwide of the more than 1.5 million students who took part in

the competition as juniors. “We are very proud of Larry and Mackenzie’s accomplishments and wish them nothing but success in the future,” said counselor Kerri Friend.

Honoring the Memory The East Islip Middle School eighth-grade Leaders Club held its second annual pet toy drive last month, honoring the memory of teacher Wendy Rauh and successfully providing for the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopta-Pet Center. “Our beloved teacher,

colleague and friend, Wendy Rauh, had two dogs she loved dearly,” said Leaders Club adviser Diane Wahrenburg regarding the genesis of the drive. “The school community really stepped up again this year by donating pet food, toys and money to the pets in need at the shelter.”

Leaders Club members, their families and several teachers met at the shelter on December 12th to pay tribute to Rauh, donate the items and visit the animals. Capping off the ceremony, eighth-grader Faith Henderson shared a heartwarming story about Rauh with the group.

Stony Brook University has named the members of its second annual 40 Under Forty alumni recognition program. The University will celebrate these early career high achievers at an awards event on Tuesday, January 26th, at The Edison Ballroom in New York City. Selected from a diverse nominee pool of Stony Brook graduates, the honorees represent the University’s most creative and bold young professionals in science, technology, engineering, and medicine, as well as business, sports, and the arts, from groundbreaking researchers and tech innovators, to healthcare advocates and civic heroes. Among them are entrepreneur Tristan Walker ’05, stem cell researcher Min Yu ’06, Miami Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler ’08 and environmental activist Ikal Angelei ’10. The 40 Under Forty list includes 11 Long Islanders, as well as recipients from across the country and beyond. “Stony Brook University graduates are ambitious and creative. They’re passionately engaged in issues that matter and are pushing the boundaries of knowledge and expectations in their fields,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L.
