he East Islip High School chapter of the New York State Mathematics Honor Society ran its very first collection this year for the annual U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Drive. Receptacles were placed throughout the district during November and December, resulting in a successful holiday donation project for the benefit of needy and underprivileged children. ART & CHARITY - Students at East Islip Middle School recently combined handson art instruction and community service in the Art ‘Can’ Make A Difference project. The students brought in numerous cans of food during November for donation to a local food pantry. Art teachers Erin Jacob, Deborah Myer, Joy Taylor and Frances Weller arranged the cans in the school’s art rooms, forming a series of colorful still lifes on each table. The young artists were then able to create observational drawings of the displays. Two carloads of cans were later donated to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Islip Terrace for those in need.

Jingle Bells. “They were so excited to perform and spread holiday cheer,” said the ensemble’s director, Concetta Stevens. “It was cold and rainy but it did not hinder their performance nor their enthusiasm.” The determined studentmusicians performing for the community included alto saxophonist Jack Clyne;

baritone saxophonist Zachary Schurman; horn player Jason Burke; trumpeters Max Calarco, Justin Lamando, Evan Mauner, Gabriel Oldshein and James Sullivan; trombonists Jaylen Kelly and Timothy McCann; and tuba players Jack Donovan and Matthew Michaels.

A select group of singers from the East Islip High School Honors Choir was invited to sing at the Islip Town “Merry On Main” event on December 7th. The talented students, led by junior Joseph Janover on guitar, sang various carols to spread some holiday cheer to those in attendance. Singing soprano were juniors Krista Cook and Alyssa Stephens and senior Erin

Geraghty; singing alto were sophomore Noelia Vazquez, junior Samantha Sampollo and senior Paige Epstein; singing tenor were Janover and fellow junior Sam Sharkey; and singing bass was sophomore Jonathan Coffin. On December 8th, these students were joined by junior David Cisek and senior Matthew Carillo (singing bass along with Coffin) at the Great River

Community Association’s annual tree lighting ceremony at Great River Memorial Park, helping create a festive mood for the gathering. The entire honors choir later performed at Long Island MacArthur Airport on December 19th as part of the airport’s holiday concert series, singing in the main terminal in front of the airport’s Christmas tree.

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

East Islip High School seniors Adam Dobkowski and Carlee Ancona have served as sterling role models for their peers, earning them special recognition as the school’s 2013 recipients of the Suffolk Zone Award. The students were honored by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a dinner held on December 4th at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch and Golf Club in Hauppauge. Chosen by East Islip’s

physical education staff, the Suffolk Zone Award is given annually to the top male and female physical education students in that year’s graduating class. These students strongly contribute to the overall positive tone of physical education classes as well as the school. The criteria for achieving this honor, as defined by the Suffolk Zone Chapter, include earning an A average or above 90 in high school physical education classes, achieving an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of

junior year, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership qualities, and being a role model for good health and physical fitness. “Adam and Carlee have made an outstanding effort to be cooperative, honest, poised, self-confident, attentive, industrious and enthusiastic regarding class activities,” said East Islip Athletic Director Stephen Restivo, who attended the ceremony. “These students also promote a healthy lifestyle both in the classroom and on the fields and courts.”

sold-out event will help fund the LIAM Foundation and EJ Autism’s work in supporting children with special needs in the East Islip School District. To date, EJ Autism has donated extensively to the district and to 30 other programs on Long Island,

Scouting’s path has definitely molded me into the person I am today, with its Scout laws influencing every action and decision I make. Scouting has also guided me in my ambitions, and choosing my career.” Max goes on to say, ”No matter where life takes me, I know that the knowledge and morals Scouting has given me will lead me to

Alexa Gilberti, a Senior at St John the Baptist DHS of West Islip has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC on February 14th-16th, 2014. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Alexa Gilberti was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent St John the Baptist DHS NY based on her

Max Michael Gieraltowski successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in June, 2013, officially making him the 45th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, NY. Max’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, January 14th, 2014, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. Max Gieraltowski is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, Max has served the troop as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Den Chief for the Cub Scouts in Pack 38. Max is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Max has also earned the following BSA Awards: Snorkeling BSA and Scuba BSA. Max has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the National Boy Scout Sea Base – Scuba Live Aboard Adventure

success in my education, my career, and my life.” Max is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is ranked ninth in his graduating class for academic achievement, has been on the school’s Math Team, serving as the Secretary during the current academic year, and a member of the Math Honor Society serving as current Vice President. Max has also been on the High School Academic Team and Quiz Bowl. His plan after High School will be to attend college to major in mechanical engineering. Max has also been active in music, where he is a member of the East Islip High School Wind Ensemble serving as Vice President during the current academic year, the High School Jazz Band, Pep Band and the High School Symphonic Orchestra. Community Service has been important to Max as he has logged 72.5 hours of community service, including helping at the Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry and Food Drive, Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang at St. Anne’s Church, along with working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. Max is the son of Kath and Michael Gieraltowski of Islip Terrace and brother to Life Scout and Patrol Leader and 10th grader, Harrison. Max’s father, Michael is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205.

On Thursday December 26th at 3:21 p.m., Suffolk County EMS First Responder, Christine Hogan, answered a 911 emergency call for active maternity help. Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world. As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide postdispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord. Christine answered the call with one patient, and quickly found herself with two. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a job well done.” Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn. “Our men and women of Emergency Medical Services in Suffolk County have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am proud of Christine’s unwavering composure and thank her for her commitment to serve the people of Suffolk County.”

Santa was in the house day and night during December at East Islip High School, bringing joy to the children of the community. At the school’s third annual Evening with Santa on December 6th, teacher Kelly Schwender and her high school “elves” prepared a special night of fun, crafts and games in the school cafeteria. Several hundred young pajama-clad students showed up to meet and have their picture taken with Santa, who came as a special guest of the Solar Dad and Sons company. Meanwhile, Schwender’s high schoolers volunteered their time to do face

painting, munch cookies and milk, and play games, including bowling and basketball, with the younger children. “This was the largest turnout of children since Mrs. Schwender began this event three years ago,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s guidance director. “The parents and children were so happy to be part of this event, and so was Santa, making his first trip this year to East Islip High School.” Santa returned to East Islip on December 17th when Schwender and her elf volunteers hosted another annual event, the Toddler High Breakfast with Santa, including

several new craft projects created by the high schoolers and Toddler High students. “This program provides our students with the chance to buddy up with the young toddlers that are enrolled in our program,” said Malinowitzer. “It brings parents, grandparents, teachers and students together to celebrate the holiday season and to show the wonderful relationships that are created throughout the school year between the toddlers and the high school students in Mrs. Schwender’s child development classes.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a press conference to announce the commencement of year-round Sunday bus service on ten bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.”

“We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County, said County Executive Bellone. “Investments in our infrastructure serve as economic development initiatives which will help to grow our economy and provide for a sustainable economic future.” “This expansion of service is the single largest increase in service in the history of Suffolk County Transit,” said John Corrado, President of Suffolk Transportation Services. “I am pleased to be a partner with Suffolk County and continue to look forward to opportunities where we can provide our riders with enhanced services and improved communications. Suffolk Bus is also providing service for the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation para-transit riders and those who are hearing or sight impaired. “Sunday service will help
