The International Thespian Society was founded 90 years ago, if they accumulate a sufficient number of points, which are awarded for performance, writing, technical work and other theatrical endeavors. Members are entitled to participate in national events and local workshops, and pledge to

Forty Islip High School students were inducted into the International Thespian Society, the honor society for the dramatic arts. The Dec. 9 ceremony, held in the school auditorium, marked the inaugural ITS induction for Islip.

The boating public is invited to the Tides and Currents Seminar, on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the East Islip Public Library at 381 East Main Street, East Islip, NY 11730.

This seminar will cover how the sun and moon create tidal patterns, sources of information about tides and tidal currents, simple ways to predict height of tide and speed of current flow and how to use both print and electronic tide tables.

Islip High School’s virtual enterprise firm Gifts to Go recently qualified for the finals in a 60-second elevator pitch competition during the sixth annual Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship

Leadership Conference, held at LIU Post in Brookville. Gifts to Go CEO Thomas Vitale pitched the company to a panel of judges – including various business owners and college professors and administrators – and over

2,800 audience members.

Honor Society Gives Back To Community’s Children As the culmination of Islip High School’s World Language Honor Society annual monthlong toy and clothing drive to benefit community children in need, the Suffolk County Department of Social Services visited the school on Dec. 18. Club

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do.

From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs.

The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play!

In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others.

Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Celebrating Good Character Sayville School District in a partnership with Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is joining the fight against bullying on Long Island with the LICAB CommunityLeadership Award. Not only will this new program bring social-emotional awareness into schools, it will honor select students who show outstanding conduct in their daily lives.

Sayville’s Student Services Director Jillian Makris and LICAB Executive Director Joe Salamone launched this character recognition program for Sayville students, K-12, who “always do what is right with no expectation of reward.” This is especially important in a society where “talent” often eclipses “character” for accolades.

“Of course, there is a place for talent to be celebrated,” Mrs. Makris said at the first-ever Community Leadership Award ceremony, “…but sometimes what is not celebrated is character— making the right choice.”

After mentioning one of her favorite quotes—talent is a gift, but character is a choice—to the students and their family members attending the celebration, Mrs. Makris acknowledged that the five students

(one from each school) who were being honored have daily demonstrated those characteristics of compassion, kindness, empathy and integrity that earned them recognition.

She thanked them for contributing to “the moral fabric” of each of their schools. She also thanked the parents “who have been instrumental as the most important people in your child’s life.”

Mr. Joe Salamone explained to the students and families the importance of offsetting the negative influences that sway behavior. “We wanted to give an award to students who are just getting up every day and doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. Our [LICAB’s] primary goal is to combat bullying on Long Island and…good character contributes to the battling of bullying. If you have good character, you are more than likely not going to be a bully… you are more than likely going to be somebody who stands up for somebody who is being bullied, and those are the kind of characteristics we’re seeking to reward here.”

Mr. Salamone also admitted that upon reviewing the nominations, he was pleased to see how many more Sayville

students in all the buildings qualified for the award. [The Awards will be distributed quarterly during the academic year to other students]. “The five that were chosen today,” Mr. Salamone continued, “were five of the best and the first to receive this award…. This is the inaugural distribution of these awards anywhere on Long Island.”

As the recipients were called up to receive their awards, they were congratulated by the faculty who nominated them along with Mr. Salomone who presented them with the framed certificate and a monetary prize.

A day after performing Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” at their Dec. 10 winter concert, East Islip High School musicians from the school’s honors symphony orchestra caught a performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet at

New York City’s Lincoln Center. The field trip allowed the students to hear the music that they had studied, performed by professionals in a beautiful theater.

“It was such a wonderful opportunity

Tips To Help Alleviate Caregiving Stress (NAPSI)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs.

Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially.

The stress involved can be worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities.

It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their

own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving.

Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat healthy meals.

It’s very important for

caregivers to recognize their own limits. Here are a few tips to help: • Find out about caregiving resources in your community.

• Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to do their share.

• Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do” lists.

• Stay in touch with family and friends.

• Join a support group.

• Make time to get away and have fun.

• Consider home care supportive services.
