LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the country’s largest credit unions, has partnered with Connoisseur Media and EAC Network to support the Coats for Kids drive.

TFCU is supporting the initiative to provide kids with warm coats this winter by placing collection bins at its 25 branches. From now through February 28th, credit union members and the public are asked to donate new and ‘gently used’ warm coats, scarves, hats, gloves and earmuffs. The items will be distributed by EAC Network, a nonprofit organization serving over 5,000 Long Island children in crisis through its children and youth programs.

“Connoisseur Media (WALK 97.5, K-98.3 & 103.1 MAX FM) is committed to supporting children in our community. The Coats for Kids drive allows us to help children here on Long Island immediately. The demand is significant for coats especially when we have very cold weather like we have been experiencing.

The second show is the Children’s Art Exhibit of work from grades K-8.

This exhibit is open for viewing on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 through Saturday, March 3rd. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but will be closed on Monday, February 19th.

The Artist reception for the Children’s Show will be held on Saturday, March 3rd from noon to 2 p.m. and is open to the public.

The Town of Babylon History Museum at Old Town Hall will also be open during these shows.

We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book.

There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede.

This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment.

Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better?

I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple.

And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will hold their 2018 Talent Competition on Saturday, March 3rd, at the Seymour Weiner Theatre at the Long Island High School for the Arts, located at 239 Cold Spring Road, in Syosset.

Nassau BOCES renamed the building that houses its music and theatre programs at the Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) in honor of the mother of legendary musician and Long Island native Billy Joel. The Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre was dedicated in late December at the art school’s Syosset campus.

Rosalind Nyman Joel was born on February 15th, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip and Rebecca Nyman, who had emigrated from England. In a 1942 student musical production at City College of New York, she met Howard Joel, a German immigrant whose family had escaped Nazi Germany in 1939. World War II would interrupt their courtship, but after Howard’s service in the U.S. Army, he returned and they married in 1946.

Rosalind supported various charitable endeavors.

Progressing from her strong support in assuring his musical education, the son who would reach world renown as singersongwriter Billy Joel used his grounding in classical music to help

create one of pop music’s most enduring bodies of work. His poignant song, “Rosalinda’s Eyes,” from the 1978 album 52nd Street, is a tribute to her, derived from the family history. Rosalind Nyman Joel passed away July 13th, 2014 at the age of 92.

A longtime arts and music education advocate, Mr. Joel is a strong supporter of the Long Island High School for the arts. He conducted a Master Class for LIHSA students and has visited them in their classrooms.

Mr. Joel pledged $1.5 million in 2016 to LIHSA. Of this amount, he contributed $1,000,000 in 2016, $250,000 in 2017 and the final $250,000 will be donated next year.

In August, Mr. Joel gave a scholarship ($20,000) to a budding pianist who recently graduated from LIHSA to attend Berklee College of Music.

The Joel Foundation also announced a pledge of $1 million to continue support for Exploring the Arts (ETA), the non-profit organization founded by legendary singer Tony Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto, dedicated to strengthening

With support from the Joel Foundation, ETA will work closely with LIHSA to create exciting opportunities and rigorous instruction for its music students over the next four years. As an ETA Partner School, LIHSA will receive $100,000 and engage with ETA’s network of 27 Partner Schools in New York City for peer-to-peer professional development.

Swearing In Ceremony Three new and two existing Town of Babylon officials took the Oath of Office before the January 2nd, 2018 board meeting at Town Hall in Lindenhurst.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez began their new terms after being re-elected in November.

Councilman Anthony Manetta and Town Clerk Geraldine Compitello began their first terms in office following their victories.

Councilman Terence McSweeney also began his first term in office after being appointed

by Supervisor Schaffer to fill the seat left vacant by former Councilman Tom Donnelly. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Town Board at the beginning of the meeting.

Councilman Manetta is the former CEO and executive director of the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). There, he worked on economic development projects and community outreach.

Councilman McSweeney is 14-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and a volunteer firefighter in North Babylon. He has spent the past several years in different roles in his community, most recently as a special assistant to Supervisor Schaffer.

Compitello, an Amityville native, worked in Supervisor Schaffer’s office as Deputy Chief of Staff since 2013. She has worked on special projects for the Town in that role, most recently the construction of a specialized respite park for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s.

“Terry, Anthony and Gerry will all be great additions to the Town Board,” said Schaffer at the front of a crowded town board room. “When I started here, I was the youngest member of the Town Board. Now, I’m the oldest, so it will be great to add some new energy and ideas,” he added.

The mayors of the three villages within the Town of

Babylon were on-hand to swear-in all five officials.

Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata read the Oath of Office to Schaffer, Martinez and Manetta.

Amityville Village Mayor Dennis Siry recited it with Compitello, and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino assisted McSweeney.

“Everything that we do has the residents’ best interests in mind. We work hard to serve the public as best as we can. Terry, Anthony and Gerry will help us continue to do that and I am excited to see what we can accomplish during this term,” said Martinez.

Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, now the senior Town Board member, was also on-hand to welcome her new colleagues.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit?

“Your hands are the main transmitters of health care-acquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.”

Two simple things can

go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly.

Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers.

“Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one

hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.”

Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.

New CEO Welcomed

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) Board of Directors announces that Randell (Rande) Marie Bynum has been appointed as the Council’s newest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the recent retirement of former GSNC CEO Donna Ceravolo.

Bynum, a third generation

Girl Scout, brings decades of experience enhancing the efforts of nonprofit organizations. Her work includes the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Girl Scouts of USA, private corporations and media entities with a focus on education, community engagement and youth

empowerment.

“Rande embodies the spirit of a G.I.R.L [Gogetter, Innovator, RiskTaker, and Leader], and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is delighted to welcome Rande as our new CEO,” said Wanda Jackson, President of GSNC’s Board of Directors. “After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that Rande will be a terrific fit to lead our Council. In addition, she was also the publishing director of family and community engagement at Scholastic Inc. She received a Master of Social Work with concentrations in program planning, administration and research from Stony Brook University and also holds a B.A. from Binghamton University.

Earlier in her career, Bynum was the Director, Program and Adult Development at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

She also worked at the Girl Scouts of the USA, where she was responsible for

the implementation of The Dove Self-Esteem Fund corporate partnership and the development of the Girl Scout/Dove Self-Esteem Program. In her role at the Girl Scouts of the USA, she co-authored the acclaimed workbook Dove’s True You! -Sometimes I Feel Ugly and Other Truths About Growing Up. “I am thrilled to be back at GSNC as your new CEO and delighted to see how this Council has grown and changed,” said Bynum.

“Over the last 25 years, I have been fortunate to work with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA, in addition to other organizations focused on empowering youth and bringing families closer together. I believe girls thrive by having a place to build courage, confidence and character where they can learn skills that will last a lifetime.”
