Take Steps Towards A Longer, Healthier Life On National Walking Day

The American Heart Association Invites People To Move More And Stress Less As Organization Celebrates 100 Years Of Lifesaving Work

Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve overall health and manage stress, yet 1 in 4 U.S. adults are sedentary for more than eight hours each day, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, established National Walking Day to encourage people to move more throughout their day. This year, in celebration of the organization’s Centennial, communities across the country are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 3 to take a walk and raise awareness of the benefits of movement.

“The American Heart Association is a relentless force for building healthier communities, one step at a time,” said Evelina Grayver, M.D., President of the American Heart Association on Long Island and Director, Women’s Heart Program, Katz Institute for Women’s Health, Northwell Health’s Central Region. “National Walking Day demonstrates the progress that can happen when people come together and take steps, big or small, to improve the health of their communities.”

Walking is one of the simplest ways to get and stay active. Physical activity such as walking can help reduce stress, improve mood and sleep, and lower the risk of diseases. To participate in National Walking Day, the American Heart Association offers these tips:

Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you.

If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go.

If you have a pet, get moving together! Walking is a win-win for the health of you and your pet.

To participate in National Walking Day, invite friends, family, colleagues or even a pet to join in on a walking route of your choice.

There’s Water Damage to My Basement Wall. Am I insured?

It’s a fact of life. Most Homeowners haven’t a clue about how or what damages are covered by insurance. Among the most confusing of claims are those caused by water. To understand how and when water damage is covered, consider three different sources of the water.

Floods are water from outside a home where water is covering 2 acres of land. This is not covered by Home insurance. To be covered against flood damage one needs to own a flood policy. Most Americans do not live in Flood zones and do not have Flood policies. However, 20% of all flood claims come from people who do NOT live in flood zones. How can that

be? Think of water-main pipes that have broken in low lying areas. Consider record rainfalls of several inches. Remember how this led to drowning deaths last year in NYC basement apartments.

‘Back-up sewer and drain’ are just as described. Water backs up from the sewer or a sump-

pump drain. Water flows backwards from the way it normally flows. Most insurance policies require a separate endorsement adding ‘Back-up sewer and drain’ coverage. Generally, the annual Declarations

Pages received by the homeowner reference which endorsements are, or are not, part of the policy.

Water over-flow from a sink, tub, or toilet is NOT a back-up. These are over-flows, as described. Consider the source. Is the water emanating from outside the home (back-up) or from inside the home (over-flow.) Over-flow IS covered by Home policies. Water damage coming from an above-ground source (roof or walls) these are covered by the Home policy, with limitations. Have questions? Ask your insurance agent.

On March 11, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs NYS held its annual Cultural Arts Day Competition at Domenico’s Restaurant hosted by the Women’s Club of Farmingdale. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for

travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a
