Thank you to all the Beautification volunteers who helped to get the Village ready for the holidays. It was certainly a different year. As we all know, Covid-19 has placed many restrictions on gathering. In thinking outside the box volunteers were asked to decorate wreaths at their homes.

DPW delivered wreaths to the volunteers’ homes and new lights and bows were replaced on the wreaths. DPW then picked up the wreaths and hung them on Main Street. A huge thank you to these

volunteers! The Village looks beautiful and brings a little cheer during this Covid-19 pandemic.

The Village has grant money through HUD (Community Development Block Grant) that can be used to help homeowners who need assistance with maintaining their homes. Please call Village Hall at 516- 249-0093 for the requirements to participate in this program and ask for Barbara Kelly. A program is planned for late August (date to be determined) to help homeowners apply for this grant money.

Thank you to all that donated toys for our annual Marine Toys for Tots collection, and to all that donated to help feed the local needy, we truly appreciate everyone’s contributions.

Farmingdale Village Trustee Walter Priestley recently visited Farmingdale Adult Daycare to bring some holiday cheer, along with members of the Woman’s Club of Farmingdale and others to record a holiday video for the seniors. The staff and seniors enjoyed the visit with Santa, and

Christmas Carols/Holiday Songs by the chorus, thanks all involved!

The Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce Annual Holiday Party and swearing in of Officers took place in December with limited attendance and careful safety protocols in place.

In spite of challenging times, spirits were high and Chamber members are committed to helping Farmingdale businesses and the community. It was a privilege to MC the event and congratulations to all those installed to the Chamber Board, and all those honored. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce and to award recipients for all you do!

Johnson Announces Winter 2021 Toddler Arts & Crafts Program

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will be offered during the months of January and February.

This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration will take place on January 6, 2021, from 1 pm to 4 pm, at the Hicksville Athletic Center, 67 South Broadway, in Hicksville.

“The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

“Classes will certainly fill up quickly as this program

offers children a great wintertime activity” The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, beginning January 26th, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child.

Classes will take place on Tuesdays at 10am (two year olds only); Tuesdays at 11am (three and four year olds); Wednesdays at 10am (two year olds only); Wednesdays at 11am (three and four year olds); Thursdays at 10am (two year olds only); and Thursday at 11am (three and four year olds).

Each class is approximately 30 to 45 minutes long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child.

Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment.

Due to COVID-19, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing and temperatures will be checked upon arrival.

Masks must be worn by children and caregivers for the length of the class. Daily cleaning and sanitizing takes place prior to and after classes.

The Toddler’s Arts & Crafts Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division.

Holiday Cheer Bus Elf Ride On Sunday December 20, 2020, KiDS NEED MoRE hosted their 6th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS ELF RiDE. Buses stocked with toydelivering elves drove to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 400 families coping with cancer and serious illness.

“We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make

the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a

“Auld Lang Syne” “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish poem that was written by Robert Burns in 1788. Burns claimed when he wrote the words down and put them to music, and later sent them the poem to the Scots Musical Museum, that “Auld Lang Syne” was an ancient song, but he had been the first to record it on paper. According to Scotland. org, the phrase “auld lang syne” translates roughly to

“for old times’ sake.” Others have translated it to mean “time goes by” or even as “once upon a time.” The song is about preserving old friendships and reminiscing about events that occurred during the year. Many people sing it to evoke fellowship and nostalgia, though most cannot fully get past the first verse of the song. Its lyrics are a challenge to the unfamiliar - even among

Three Kings Day

The holiday season begins with Thanksgiving, and many people believe that the festivities come to a close after ringing in the new year.

In fact, for the faithful, the Christmas season does not end until January 6 (January 12 in Eastern churches).

January 6 marks the celebration of the Epiphany, sometimes referred to as Three Kings Day, Little Christmas, the Baptism of Jesus, and Día de los Reyes.

The Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after December 25.

In fact, that is where the phrase the Twelve Days of Christmas, and the song of the same name, originated.

Christians believe that the real celebration of the holiday season does not begin until December 24 and then continues through Three Kings Day. While

the four weeks preceding Christmas, also known as Advent, are supposed to be times of reflection and prayer in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ, the 12 days of Christmas are times of great celebration. On the Epiphany, children may leave their shoes out for presents in a similar fashion to the way stockings are hung. Gifts are exchanged, reminiscent of the three gifts the magi presented to the Christ child of gold, frankincense oil and a resin called myrrh. The gold represented Christ’s royal standing. The frankincense marked Christ’s divine birth.

Finally, the myrrh stood for Christ’s mortality.

Many celebrants will bake ring-shaped cakes in which they will hide plastic baby figurines that are meant to

symbolize Jesus Christ. The cake is called The Kings Ring, or Rosca de Reyes.

In Latin America, the three magi are more prominent figures than Santa Claus and are greatly revered by children and adults alike. Until the 19th century, the Epiphany may have been considered more important than Christmas day.

However, those tides have largely shifted outside of Latin America and areas dominated by large populations of people who have Latin American heritage.

Christmas and New Year’s garner considerable attention during holiday celebrations, but Three Kings Day also is an important date on the calendar for faithful Christians.

Town Now Accepts Credit Cards to Ease The Building Permit Process Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town will begin accepting credit card payments at its Planning and Development Department. Credit card payments, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa, will be accepted for all Departmental fees pertaining to building permit applications, building permits (including Same Day permits), electrical and plumbing licensing, multiple residence and public assembly licenses, surveys and document reproductions and Zoning Board of Appeals fees.

“Once the economy began to reopen from Statemandated closures, the Town Board and I knew it was critical to jumpstart the way in which government operates. In the Department of Planning & Development specifically, we eliminated red tape so restaurants could open outdoor dining immediately. We recently extended all outdoor dining opportunities throughout 2021 so that restaurants can serve the maximum number of patrons and weather this economy,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“My administration also reprioritized our workforce so we could process building applications at a fast pace and put people back to work.

We offer the convenience of Same Day Permits for a long list of home improvement projects, including solar panel installations.”

Upon taking office in 2017, Supervisor Saladino led the initiative to open a new satellite office at Town Hall South in Massapequa, as well as the Same Day Permit program for a variety of projects. Just like these initiatives, credit card payments will be accepted at both department locations, including Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa.

“Less red tape has helped aide homeowners and the construction industry after having been shuttered by State governments for months during the pandemic.

Further expanding on our promises to increase efficiency and make the Town more userfriendly for all residents, we are pleased to now offer the convenience of credit card payments to those who visit our Planning and

Development Department to help fast-track the process,” added Supervisor Saladino.

“Just in the past couple of years, we have totally revamped our Planning & Development Department to better assist the residents and businesses of our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Accepting credit cards further assists our residents and businesses owners seeking to improve their homes and facilities, as well as contractors looking to get to work.”

With offices presently closed to the public, residents can download Building Permit applications from the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Forms can also be obtained by calling the department at (516) 624-6200 and pressing Prompt Number 1. Completed applications can be mailed in, or dropped off at a department drop boxes located at Town Halls North (74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay) and South (977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa).
