Did You Know?

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose.

In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Over 35 college lacrosse players traded their sticks for Santa hats to give children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities a Christmas to remember.

Amidst studying for finals and training in the off- season, the Farmingdale State College lacrosse team shopped for over 100 gifts, purchased them and wrapped them to put smiles on the faces of students at AHRC Suffolk’s Seiff Educare Center. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now and a lot of team members who graduate come back to do it” senior and team captain John McMahon said. Whether it is large, small, national, regional or maybe just a very local non-profit, we all can make a difference. Sometimes all it takes to ignite positive change is to show people how and where they can begin, and that is the purpose of this column.

This organization sends the donated items annually to service men and women overseas in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait. For those on the frontlines, there are a few premier battalions that carry with them a rich heritage of dangerous combat and incredible heroism. Through the Adopt a Battalion program, supporters have the opportunity to directly support these premier battalions. The program offers soldiers support for all of their immediate needs, providing qualifying IDF combat battalions the opportunity to unwind from their difficult training and responsibilities. They are able to enjoy activities such as holiday ceremonies and events, recreational activities, and special days of fun and leisure with their fellow soldiers.

While dropping off the Project Night Night tote bags for homeless children, WCF members spoke with the director at Madonna Heights about the need for coats – boys, girls and women’s. So, with that in mind, the WCF will be collecting gently used or new coats at their January meeting. The Jr. League of the WCF is anxious to participate and will be joining in this project as well.

On Thursday, December 5, Women’s Club of Farmingdale members enjoyed a delicious

Christmas lunch at Trento’s Restaurant in Farmingdale. Thank you to Barbara Hoerner and Loda Romanelli who chaired this event. Tables were charmingly decorated with candles, Christmas balls and holly sitting on silver placemats hand made by Barbara Hoerner. Each place setting had a candy filled gift bag compliments of Ingrid Hernandez.

The Women’s Club choir serenaded guests with lovely holiday music, accompanied by organist Jack Cottrell. Collections of Project Night Night tote bags continued and were delivered to Madonna Heights on Friday, December 6. Project Night Night totes are filled with children’s books, stuffed animals and blankets and are donated to children’s homeless shelters so that these children can take with them a sense of security, warmth and comfort while advancing their literacy skills.

With this year’s fundraisers and philanthropic projects completed, the ladies of the WCF & WCF Jr League enjoyed some down time at Starkie Bro’s. Garden Center making holiday centerpieces and, once again, at the annual Emigholz Open House where hot cider, cookies, chocolates and assorted desserts were packaged with good conversation and good fellowship, “Wishing Everyone A Very Happy and Healthy New Year”

John Theissen C h i l d r e n ’ s Foundation is a local non-profit that collects and distributes toys, provides hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational e q u i p m e n t , supports families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfills patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and assists sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed.

The Interfaith Choir consists of a combination of choirs from several local churches of different faiths coming together to raise their voices in unity in celebration of the Christmas season. The concert was conducted by Mr. Gene McCoy, Music Director at St. Luke’s Church.

St. Kilian’s Church, which hosted the concert, was beautifully decorated and filled to almost capacity as everyone took a moment out of very busy lives to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful voices singing Christmas and spiritual hymns, adding a serene and peaceful ambiance.

Thanks and Blessings to the Priests, Deacons, Ministers, Choirs and staff of St. Kilian, St. Thomas, St. Luke’s and the Farmingdale United Methodist Churches.

On December 7, two Women’s Club of Farmingdale members, Barbara Hoerner and Val Thieke, delivered donations from club members to Adopt-ABattalion. The donations consisted of: cookies, gum, mints, candy, granola bars,
