Over two million New Yorkers are caring for an older parent, spouse or other loved one, helping them to live independently at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and now there’s support in place that will make life a little bit easier for them. A new law, the CARE Act, makes sure family caregivers are recognized when their loved ones go into the hospital: that they’re designated in the patient’s medical record, notified when the patient will be released, and have the instruction they need to safely help their loved one stay at home. The Christmas Column By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Christmas time is here.

The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories.

These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation.

Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we

can recapture the true spirit of the season.

Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer.

For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration.

‘Tis the season, indeed.

The upside?

In

the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective.

And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

LEGAL NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS Notice is hereby given taxpayers of the Town of Babylon, that the Undersigned Receiver of Taxes has received the 2015/2016 Tax and Assessment Roll and Warrant.

She will accept payment for taxes at her office in the Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst, N.Y. 11757 or by mail, beginning December 2015 daily between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Tax Office will be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. After an extensive unit on human rights, each student put together an essay, interactive presentation and speech to share, which were all displayed in a museum-

style format throughout the fifth-grade hallway and classrooms. Projects covered topics such as defining human rights, the United Nations and important people who impacted the movement.

December 10th has been designated as Human Rights Day nationwide, as it commemorates the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration

of Human Rights, proclaiming its principles as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations.”

Fifth-graders were labeled as “youth delegates” for the day and shared video presentations and artistic presentations of their work with guests.
