The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet.

I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough.

But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators.

It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it.

When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly?

January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week.

Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters.

Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history.

I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school.

Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard?

Now, my school has changed a lot.

Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum.

Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day.

Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention.

In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars.

This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured.

I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster.

It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming.

The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time.

Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end.

If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today.

If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles.

The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

To be noticed, it tried many tricks.

With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall.

They took away all the towering trees.

Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees.

To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant.

All over different cities they were sent.

Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced.

The grounds yawned where the trees had been.

Only the unwanted little spruce was seen.

Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall.

He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim.

On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone.

“Father, oh father, come and see.

Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!”

The child exclaimed and stroked the tree.

“This is just the right size for me!”

With a shovel, the two cut carefully loose The frosty earth around the spruce.

They took it to their modest home.

To be honored and cherished it had come.

The holidays over, soon one could see In front of the houses many a dried out tree.

The spruce, however, was given a special spot On its owner’s well cared for garden lot.

World Heritage International Student Exchange Program is seeking representatives to work with volunteer host families and international exchange students in your community. WH provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school

students from around the world.

Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure.

Local representatives also have the opportunity to support American high

school students in their journey abroad.

Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, supervise the exchange students in their community throughout the year and interview American students who wish to live and learn abroad.

Entertaining Patrons

The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts recently presented its annual Winter Festival, a showcase of the impressive talent being nurtured by the school’s many programs.

Potential students and the families of current students visited the different programs – dance, film, music, theatre, visual arts – and got to see the current students in action.

The evening began with a screening of “We Are LIHSA,” a short film offering a student’s eye view of daily life at the high school. Following this was

a presentation of select artwork, during which the young artists reflected on what inspired them.

Next, LIHSA performers took to the stage for a rollicking song and dance production.

Performances included a blues quintet, jazz and pop trio, and a variety of dance and musical theater performances. Among the highlights were: a unique interpretation of the critically acclaimed pop hit “FourFiveSeconds;” performances from the musicals “Sweet Charity” and “Moulin Rouge;” and a variety of originally

choreographed dance numbers.

“This was a spectacular night of entertainment that all who attended thoroughly enjoyed,” LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson said of the festival. “It was a tribute to the wonderful work of our students and staff, as well as an opportunity for communities across Long Island to discover what we’re all about. It’s not enough to practice in the classroom,” Lenson added. “These remarkably talented students need to perform and to show the world what they can do.”

Area representatives are compensated based on the number of students they are supervising.

WH’s primary goal is to contribute to international understanding by enabling students to learn about other languages and cultures through active participation in family, school and community

life. Through sharing their home, host families and communities also gain new knowledge and appreciation of other cultures and languages.

WH’s area representatives are the cornerstone of the organization, making all of this possible.

Officers Elected

A pair of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students earned distinction recently as elected officials to the renowned career and technical student organization SkillsUSA. Plumbing student Jack Shea of the Lynbrook UFSD was elected as Area 6 Vice President and Nurse Assisting student Michenka Juin of the Baldwin UFSD was elected as Historian in the New York state service organization.

SkillsUSA encourages

collaboration among students, teachers and industry professionals to provide programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education, with the goal of creating a skilled workforce.

In addition to fulfilling their roles as state officers in the organization, which boasts a national membership of about 300,000 students and advisers, Jack and Michenka helped train the next generation of local SkillsUSA officers at the 2015 New York State Leadership Conference, held in Syracuse recently.

“Being a part of SkillsUSA gave me the confidence that I was lacking before,” says Jack. “I could never speak in front of a group of people before, and now I’m speaking in front of hundreds of people, thanks to the leadership training.”

“SkillsUSA has taught

me so much. Not only has it helped me with my professional career, but also as a person,” says Michenka. “It helped me get in touch with myself, and I can now say that I am a better person because of the experience.”

Both students credit Nassau BOCES Barry Tech for allowing them to thrive.

“Barry Tech has really taught me a lot and helped me prepare for the work world,” says Jack. “It’s very hands-on and the skills I’m learning will really give me a jump start for my career.”

“Being at Barry Tech has been very beneficial for me.

I’m learning more than I could elsewhere,” says Michenka. “The hands-on experience is so valuable. I get to go to nursing homes and work with the patients.

I’m learning to feed the patients, and I’m building special bonds with them.”
