The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafficking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conflicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufficiency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals suffering from mental health and/ or substance abuse issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!

Free Musical Performances At Local Libraries

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilman Labriola. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

The Long Island Flute Club is pleased to continue its tradition of presenting its annual Holiday Concerts. Once again the Flute Club will be presenting two concerts, one at each end of the Long Island community. It is a holiday celebration for children of all ages!

The Suffolk County Concert will be Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the United Methodist Church of Lake Ronkonkoma. This will be the thirteenth time the Long Island Flute Club will present a holiday concert at this charming church in Lake Ronkonkoma. The picturesque church is located at 792 Hawkins Avenue, in Lake Grove. The concert is free of charge. In the spirit of the holiday season, they will be taking up a collection to donate to the ALS Association.

The Nassau County Concert will be Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 2:00 pm in the Red Ballroom of Old Westbury Gardens. The Gold Coast-era Mansion will be decorated for the holidays, and there will even be an appearance from Santa Claus himself. The concert is free with admission to Old Westbury Gardens.

The Holiday Flute Choir is made up of members of the Long Island Flute Club. The group is a mixture of

players of all ages who play at an advanced level. They are professional players, teachers, and students who all love the flute and enjoy sharing music. The Women’s Club Of Farmingdale Attends The Island-Metro District Luncheon/Meeting

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) attended the Island-Metro District Luncheon/Meeting on Oct 30. WCF member Vicky Impollonia chaired the business meeting as the newly installed 20222024 Island Metro District Director. The luncheon was held at Olivetto’s in Franklin Square with seven Long Island GFWC senior and junior clubs with a total of 5 members in attendance.

Supporting our District Director and representing

the Women’s Club of Farmingdale were Pres. Barbara Hoerner, Dolores Cianciabella, Tina Diamond, Loda Romanelli and Linda Kreussling. From GFWC-NYS came former president Karen Amman and GFWC-NYS 2nd Vice Pres Jane Lemak. Lemak sent greetings from GFWC-NYS Pres Kathy Meyers. Both the Pres & VP Elect emphasized the importance of GFWC membership and how this organization is noted for enhancing the

lives of others through volunteerism. Impollonia distributed GFWC-NYS directories to each club President and wished all the clubs a successful year.

Santa’s Mailboxes From North Pole Have Arrived In Town Offices

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole.

Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 12th

The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters to Santa at the North Pole. Letters received by Monday, December 12th with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. No postage is necessary.

Colorful red mailboxes will be accessible from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily at the following locations:

Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa Ice Skating Center, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage.

Rethinking The Holidays After Loss

Families Turn To Grief Workshops Offering Imaginative And Effective Approaches, As Part Of Their Healing Process

Each year at the start of the holiday season, feelings of grief among those who have lost loved ones intensifies and for many, can continue throughout the entire two-month holiday season. Every invitation and holiday card received, and each trip to a card store or mall can trigger feelings of isolation, pain and sadness.

Experts say that when experiencing intensified feelings at holiday time, grief workshops can provide bereaved individuals an opportunity to join together and learn how to enjoy the holidays again, following a loss.

“Grief workshops function on two levels. First, they connect individuals who have a shared experience of loss and second, they provide valuable tools

and therapeutic programs for the bereaved to heal and learn how to live their lives,” said Adam Rabinovitch, Executive Director of COPE.

Bereavement Specialist, Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, who recently lead a holiday focused grief workshop for Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum and its partnership with COPE said, “I have always known how precious life is and how quickly it can change. At holiday time, celebrating those we have lost is a natural part of the grieving process, but it’s also a time to create new holiday traditions to help us move forward and this is where creative grieving techniques comes in.”

Individuals who joined Lisa for her workshop learned how to rethink the holidays after loss

by creating new ways to celebrate while keeping their holiday memories with lost loved ones alive.

“My goal is to help people change their outlook about the holidays by tapping into their memories to create a new holiday with a new and special meaning,” continued Strahs-Lorenc.

One impactful and therapeutic exercise Lisa teaches works by tapping into memories to help rethink the holidays after loss.

“We can all choose how we move forward in our lives. Hands-on, therapeutic exercises to help mourners create new memories from their old ones is a very effective and impactful way to help individuals heal,” continued Strahs-Lorenc.

“It’s all about creating new traditions. The exercise

works by thinking about all of your favorite childhood memories, as well as the memories you made as an adult, with your lost loved one. We then combine these memories and these activities into a new holiday, where all of the special moments from the past are incorporated into upcoming celebrations.”

“Grief is a part of life, but unlike other milestones, dealing with the death of loved one is not learned or taught, but something mourners for years were left to cope with on their own,” said Lillian Julien, Founder and President Emerita of COPE. “Thankfully today, individuals who have experienced loss can heal and learn to cope and live, through the help of workshops led by experienced professionals.”

Rethinking The Holidays After Loss

Now in its second year, Pinelawn’s online Grief Workshop Series was created during the Covid Pandemic to support those mourning the loss of loved ones, when many remained isolated in their homes. To date, Pinelawn has hosted 22 online grief healing workshops which have assisted over 1,275 individuals coping with grief. Topics covered have included Self Healing & Resilience Building, Journaling for Life After Loss, Allowing Nature to Hold Us, Healing Through Music, and more.

Oyster Bay Forward Grant Program

Offers $4.5 Million To Small Businesses & Non-Profits

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce that $4.5 million in Federal money secured by the Town of Oyster Bay will soon be available to small business owners and non-profit organizations financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses and not-forprofit organizations can apply to receive up to $5,000 in grant monies through this new initiative, known as the ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program.

“After a year-plus long pandemic and now facing an economic recession, small businesses need all the help they can get to stay afloat,” said Supervisor Saladino. “My administration earmarked these Federal funds to boost small businesses and not-for-profits, help them recover losses from the pandemic, and keep their operations moving forward in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

The ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program is open to businesses that employ up to 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees as well as sole proprietors. Additional eligibility criteria:

Applicant must be the principal (i.e. majority owner);

Entity must be a forprofit business, or 501c3 or 501c19 non-profit organization, with annual revenue between $35,000 and $5 million; At least 60 percent of non-profit expenses must have been programmatic in 2019;

Applicant must be in operation at the time of application and have been in operation prior to January 1, 2021; Must have fewer than 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees; Certification and demonstration of economic hardship due to pandemic; and Not be in default or arrears on past or current federal and state financing or funding programs.

Grant monies can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including expenses that helped mitigate hardships caused by the pandemic. These could include the purchase of inventory and supplies, rent payments, utilities, property taxes, lease or purchase of equipment, as well as operating and emergency maintenance.

Applications will be processed through the National Development Council (NDC) – who was retained by the Town to administer the ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program. Additional eligibility criteria, including required documents, as well as applications for eligible business and nonprofit organizations are available at TOBForward. com, where interested parties can also sign up to participate in an informative webinar further detailing the application process.

Opportunity In Mastic Beach

Invasive species are choking out the native flora in our woodlands and wetlands. You can see this in Mastic Beach, all along Pattersquash Creek where the multiflora rose is crowding out the local summersweet and highbush blueberry. Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese barberry and morning glory — all invasive species — weave an impenetrable bramble that cause the native serviceberry and chokeberry to struggle. Invasive plants add no value to our local ecology whereas native plants help nourish our soil and support a host of bugs, birds and mammals important to the local ecology, according to Mike Lovell, a local volunteer.

On Saturday, December

10 from 9 AM – 3 PM, Mastic Beach Creek Defender Walt Meshenberg will be leading up an invasive plant removal along the Pattersquash Creek and replacing them with native plants. This project is being done in collaboration with the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association, the Mastic Beach Conservancy, and volunteers in accordance with DEC guidelines. All volunteers are welcome to join in this expansive effort.

This is a muddy job so please dress appropriately for muck – waders or tall waterproof boots, if you have them, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!

How To Protect Yourself From Holiday Shopping Scams

Online scams cost Americans nearly $7 billion throughout 2021, according to the FBI, and with the holiday shopping season ramping up, it’s vital that people understand how to avoid falling victim to scams.

“Scams often increase with consumer spending, making the holidays ripe for scammers trying to take advantage of the season’s sense of urgency and scarcity,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt

management agency. “It’s not enough to be aware of scams, though. You have to learn how to watch for and avoid them so your happy holidays don’t turn into a nightmare.”

Maliga shares several things to do and watch out for to avoid falling prey to holiday shopping scams: Use secure payment methods: Be wary of websites or sellers that request unusual payment methods like wire transfers, cashier’s checks or apps. Stick to secure payment options such as major credit cards or

PayPal.

Check for site security: Look for ‘https’ at the front of the site’s URL and the small lock icon in the browser window. These indicate that the website is secure, ensuring any data you share (such as credit card numbers or shipping details) will be encrypted when you submit it.

Watch for spelling and grammatical errors: If you notice a plethora of spelling and grammar mistakes on a website, social media posts or other promotional materials, you likely want to shop elsewhere.

Pay attention to reviews: Reviews can reveal much about online retailers and sellers. Are there lots of poor reviews from buyers who didn’t receive what they purchased? Or are there numerous glowing reviews that all read alike? Either may indicate the site isn’t what it claims to be.

Watch for ‘phishy’ confirmation emails: If you receive a confirmation email for an order you didn’t place, ignore and delete it. Knowing people are likely making several orders, scammers will send

a phishing email disguised to resemble a confirmation notice from legitimate retailers. If it appears legit, try manually searching the order number on the retailer’s website instead of clicking on any included links.

Don’t let scammers steal your money or your holiday cheer. If a deal or website appears too good to be true, it likely is.

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”
