Farmingdale Playcrafters Present Footloose Let’s Dance! Farmingdale Playcrafters recently brought down the house with their electrifying take on Footloose! This musical extravaganza, based on the 80s blockbuster, tells the story of Ren McCormack, a city slicker who moves to a small town where dancing is prohibited. The production’s melting pot of heartwarming messages, catchy tunes, and high-energy dancing hooked the audience from the first beat. Director Jessica Mischke, in search of a performance brimming with energy, purpose, and a meaningful message, found her answer in Footloose. “The students have wanted to do Footloose for years, and I knew this was the right time. Little did I know just how meaningful this show would be for all of us.” The talented cast, which featured several NYSSMA-honored musicians, dazzled the audience throughout the electrifying musical. William Herbert, playing the role of Ren McCormack, captivated the audience with his boundless energy and emotion. Opposing him was Bobby Silverstein,
playing the stern and solemn Reverend Shaw Moore. Madelyn Jimenez, portraying the rebellious minister’s daughter Ariel Moore, left audiences cheering for more. The supporting cast, led by senior Angelina Pascutto as Reverend Moore’s supportive wife, Vi, and senior Alexa Nazario as the sweet and scatterbrained Rusty, brought forth a rich tapestry of characters. Senior Ryan Loughlin’s country bumpkin Willard was a crowd favorite. Ethel, Ren’s mother who would do anything for her son, was played by sophomore Sofia Grago. Senior Ava Monteleone played Urleen, Ariel’s brilliant friend. Sophomore Nick Suwalski played local bad boy Chuck Cranston. Senior Ava Lanot rounds out Ariel’s friend group by playing Wendy Jo. The ensemble of townspeople and students, played by a talented group of actors, added depth and vibrancy to the performance. The show-stopping soundtrack of Footloose was Oscar and Tonynominated, reached number one on the Billboard charts, and sold over 15 million copies.
Bringing this score to our stage was our incredibly talented Pit Orchestra, led by Ms. Thérèse Mannino, accompanied by Mrs. Pat Facchiano. Ms. Jamie Capasso and Mr. Erik Chocianowski headed set design and construction. Lastly, Mr. Joseph Hasset, Mrs. Cherie Dreyfus, and Mr. Corey Sterler managed lighting and sound. Footloose is Mrs. Jessica Mischke’s tenth time directing a Playcrafter’s musical. Her brother and assistant director, Erik Mischke, are by her side throughout all her productions. They’ve dedicated this performance to Gina Pellettiere and Bea Ferrari. In today’s world, where young people face numerous challenges and obstacles, it is more important than ever to listen to their voices and provide them with guidance and support. By doing so, we can create a better future for all. Footloose serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of listening to and guiding young people with a warm heart and an open mind.

“THANK YOU” TO LONG ISLAND VETERANS - Pictured R-L: B. Hoerner; Ret. Sgt. Cognitore; N. Carman, M. Ortolani and Vet. Home employees and volunteers
On Monday, November 13, 2023, Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) President Barbara Hoerner, WCF Crafts Committee Chair Nancy Carman, and Maria Ortolani met with retired Sargeant Joseph Cognitore, a Veterans Advisory Board Member at the LI State Veterans Home. Over 2 dozen hand-made lapghans were dropped off for the residents at this facility. These volunteers offer an extra dimension of care and service to the residents, their families and visitors giving back to those who fought to preserve our freedom and democracy. Besides volunteering here, Cognitore also speaks at many local schools on behalf of veterans. The facility is beautifully located on manicured grounds in Stony Brook. Some of the services offered include: Food Services, Alzheimer’s/Dementia, Medical and Nursing, Short Term Rehab, Recreation, Respiratory, End of Life Services. KICK OFF YOUR SUNDAY SHOES - Farmingdale Playcrafters Present Footloose. The true origin of the Photo courtesy of the Farmingdale School District Long Island State Veterans Home can be traced back
nearly six decades to the early 1940’s when Franklin D. Roosevelt was President and the US had summoned America’s young men and women to fight in World War II. Four years later, when the Allies had won the war, Uncle Sam discharged nearly 25 million soldiers and by the 1970’s, many of these veterans began realizing the need for longterm care services. This realization served as a catalyst for local veterans and legislators and sparked a massive grass-roots effort which led to the creation of the Long Island State Veterans Home in 1991. Now, over 30 years later, the Long Island State Veterans Home has emerged as one of Long Island’s premiere providers of long-term skilled nursing services and adult day health care and has compassionately cared for more than 15,000 United States veterans. The mission of the Long Island State Veterans Home is twofold. First, to provide the highest quality and most comprehensive health care services to Long Islands veterans, and
Second, to serve as a model site for research and the education and training of tomorrow’s long-term care and geriatric professionals. The Veterans Home is a major teaching affiliate of Stony Brook Medicine and continues to be one of the only nursing homes in the country that is fully integrated into the health and educational mission of a major teaching and research university. This affiliation enables the Home to offer Long Island’s veterans access to the New York metropolitan region’s best health care professionals and most advanced medical technology. For more information, please go to: https:// v e t e r a n s h o m e . stonybrookmedicine.edu The Women’s Club of Farmingdale, a local philanthropic organization, is always interested in welcoming new members. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato partnered with the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club to host a Peanut Butter & Jelly Collection Drive. Thanks to the generosity of residents, over 200 jars of new, unopened and sealed peanut butter, alternative butters and jelly jars were collected to help replenish
local food pantries and support families in need. “We are proud to partner with this great organization to help ‘spread the love’ and stock local food pantry shelves with this very popular product,” said Receiver Pravato. “Peanut butter has a long shelf life, provides many nutrients and doesn’t require refrigeration, making it among the most
highly requested items from local food banks. We thank the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club for again putting our local communities first with another wonderful initiative to help others.” “The MassapequaFarmingdale Men’s Club has been assisting local foodbanks for more than six years, and we’re supporting their efforts by helping to
collect food, fill shelves and feed the hungry,” said Councilman Hand. The Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club mission is to provide and encourage involvement in education, charitable and social programs for the men of local communities, and to support the local and wider community with activities and contributions.
“Our organization has worked to help the local and greater community for several years, and we are thrilled to once again partner with the Town of Oyster Bay to supply this much-needed item to local food pantries,” said Tom Sabellico, president and founder of the Men’s Club. “We’ve run many successful food drives and have found over the years that local
food banks like peanut butter and jelly thanks to it being easy to use, it keeps a long time, provides a variety of nutrients, is high in protection and is enjoyed by all age groups.” For more information about the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club and their mission, visit www.massapequa farmingdalemensclub.com.

Donating To Charity When donating to charity, many donors choose to contribute to child sponsorship organizations that assist needy children at home or abroad. Such organizations provide invaluable services,
though donors may be confused about just how their donations are allocated. The charity watchdog organization Give.org, which is part of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance,
notes that donations to child sponsorship organizations are often pooled and used to support projects that are intended to benefit the community where the child lives. That might not be the impression
formed by donors, who may think their donations are being conveyed exclusively to a specific child. The practice of allocating donations to cash grants given to a specific child’s family does occur,
though Give.org notes that it is far less common than pooling donations. Donors considering contributing to child sponsorship programs should not allow the way their donations may be allocated deter them,
as oftentimes pooled donations are used to build schools and/or provide medical care, clean water and even food to underprivileged children.

Suffolk County Awards United Way of Long Island $385,000 JumpSMART Grant
UNITED WAY OF LONG ISLAND AWARDED JUMPSMART GRANT - Suffolk County officials led by County Executive Steve Bellone present United Way of Long Island’s Theresa A. Regnante and Craig Fligstein a $385,OOO JumpSMART grant. Development Training Academy is being developed in conjunction with United Way of Long Island’s Net Zero Energy Building Campaign, an award-winning project that is setting a new standard in renewable energy for non-profit organizations across Long Island. Going Net Zero means the organization will save more than $70,000 in utility costs to be reinvested in
community programs. United Way is transforming its Deer Park headquarters, the renamed Entenmann Family Center for Hope, into the next generation of energy efficiency. With 576 PV solar modules, the facility will function as a “command center” for non-profit organizations across Long Island that are impacted by catastrophic events like 2012’s Super
Storm Sandy, allowing these vital organizations to continue serving the communities who rely on them when their own facilities are unavailable. In County Executive Bellone’s remarks he said, “United Way of Long Island is a constant presence in the community and one of the pillars of the community. Their Workforce Development Training Academy will
provide our residents with greater access to financial opportunities and workforce development possibilities.” “We are grateful to the Suffolk County Legislature for their support, and to Steve Bellone for his commitment and leadership to invest in workforce development,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO, United Way of Long Island. “These
funds will support the transformation of our headquarters into a Net Zero facility and provide tomorrow’s workforce with the skills needed to build a Long Island community that leaves a lighter footprint.” To learn more about the Workforce Development Training Academy, visit: https://www.unitedwayli. org/WorkforceAcademy

As winter heating season approaches, PSEG Long Island reminds customers that programs exist to help people struggling with utility bills. There are also many ways they can lower their bills by using energy wisely. “Colder weather is coming, which will mean higher heating costs. PSEG Long Island continues to work hard to provide our customers with safe, reliable energy at the lowest possible cost,” said Lou DeBrino, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Services. “To help manage energy use and costs, we offer resources, tips and a variety of energy efficiency programs. We also know many of our customers are struggling to pay bills, and we encourage them to reach out to us to enroll in a deferred payment agreement and learn about available financial assistance programs. We urge our customers to act now, and we’re here to help.” Assistance available to those struggling with bills PSEG Long Island wants to work with any customer struggling to pay their bills and help them find a solution. The company encourages anyone with a past-due account balance to call 1-800490-0025 so a representative can help them develop a deferred payment agreement tailored to the needs of their household. Additionally, PSEG Long Island wants to make customers aware of the financial assistance programs offered by New York State: The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can provide a heating fuel grant to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size and how they heat their home. A family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,838 and still qualify for benefits. This benefit is scheduled to open on Nov. 1. For more information, visit https:// otda.ny.gov/programs/heap/. Emergency HEAP, a subset of the HEAP program, offers eligible customers a grant to help low- and middleincome New Yorkers avoid having their home heating disconnected or exhausting their heating fuel source. This emergency portion of
HEAP is scheduled to open on Jan. 2, 2024. If customers are experiencing an emergency, they can apply for this benefit by reaching out to their local Department of Social Services location, which can be found here: https://otda.ny.gov/ programs/heap/contacts/ · For low-income households facing noheat situations, the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is also accepting applications for its heating equipment repair or replacement benefit. Eligible homeowners can now apply for up to $4,000 for repair or $8,000 for replacement of a furnace, boiler or other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the household’s primary heating source working. Additionally, eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment to allow for its safe and efficient operation. Customers can apply for this benefit by reaching out to their local Department of Social Services location, which can be found here: https://otda.ny.gov/programs/ heap/contacts/ Customers who apply for and receive one of these state or federal benefits are automatically placed on PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance rate, which provides a discount of more than $35 on every electric bill, along with the Residential Energy Affordability Program providing energy efficiency measures and suggestions to help lower consumption. How customers can lower their bills The most effective thing
customers can to do lower their bills is to use electricity more efficiently. Here are some helpful tips: Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save the average American household about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the
ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications. More money-saving ideas and rebate information are available at https:// www.psegliny.com/ saveenergyandmoney/ energystarrebates.
