The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room.

The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October. Over the course of the project, participants in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on

instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor. The mural depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women.

The unveiling was attended by Splashes of Hope’s Director of Operations and Muralist, Diana Fogarty, the artist, Kirk Larsen, Theresa Santmann, the project’s sponsor, several of the incarcerated youth who worked on the projects, and members of Sheriff

DeMarco’s staff.

Sheriff DeMarco praised the organization and thanked everyone at Splashes of Hope for their continued support, “I am touched by Ms. Santmann’s generosity and I thank everyone at Splashes of Hope for making this project a success. It undoubtedly left an impression on the youth who participated by imparting some confidence and helping them to realize their talents. It also brightened up the hallway for our staff, and presents a positive image for all of the inmates who come through the facility.”

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair.

Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do.

Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living.

But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance.

Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process.

Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go.

Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same.

But such is the life of a girl.

We’re wired differently.

Gala Event A Success On October 27th, the Mondays at Racine Executive Committee hosted its second annual Gala Event at Obession Catering Hall in Lindenhurst. Honorees Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia of DePasquale Salon Systems were in attendace along with representivives from four different local health care systems as well as elected officials.

Carmen Depasquale and Joseph Mastalia were given Esteem Mentorship Awards for their tireless efforts in helping the Mondays at Racine Program grow and come closer to the mission of changing the face of cancer using the skills of the beauty industry.

North Shore LIJ Health Care Systems, which has been a supporting entity for the Mondays at Racine Program for well over a year, showed their support by having Dr. Raptis, Dr. Muratori, Dr, Schwartz, Dr, McKenna and Dr. Ames attend the gala event.

Dr. James Harris, a “Top Doctor” as recognized by U. S News and World Report, along with support staff, represented Catholic Healthcare Systems through Good Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. Michael Pearl, Stony Brook University’s Gynecologic Oncologist was also in attendance.

Dr. Melissa Fana, Breast & Oncoplastic Surgeon, community organizations. as well as Dr. Mangiamelli, General Surgeon from Steven Flotteron was elected to serve on Islip’s Town Brookhaven Hospital, attended with colleagues. Both Council in 2006 and has been passionately involved in spoke to the sold out audience about the benefits of the projects and initiatives that help improve the quality of life of Islip’s residents.

Legislator Tom Cilmi and Councilman Steven Flotteron presented The Mondays at Racine’s Honorees, Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia, with a citation for being great mentors. The two public officials also presented Mondays at Racine a citation for the wonderful work that is being done.

Student Spotlight SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior.

The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.”

Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment.

When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college.

Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards.

And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building.

Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too.

The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently.

Farmingdale High School’s Labyrinth Art and Literary Magazine was recently selected by prestigious judges of the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) as “The Best of Literary Magazine Content.” Additionally, the poem “Waiting,” written by class of 2014 graduate Michelle Randazzo, was

published in the NSPA 2014 hardcover edition.

The poem was originally written and published in the school’s magazine as part of her Creative Writing class.

Farmingdale High School’s Labyrinth Magazine is one of eight school magazines nationwide to have their

content published in the NSPA 2014 hardcover edition. The NSPA is a non-profit educational association that provides journalism education services to students, teachers, media advisers and others throughout the United States and in other countries.

More than 400 Farmingdale High School seniors, dressed in fun Halloween costumes, recently marched from Farmingdale High School to Farmingdale School District’s Woodward Parkway Elementary School for the school district’s annual Halloween

Parade celebration.

Prior to the parade, the high school students participated in a costume contest, displaying a variety of creative Halloween costumes, some created by the students.

The high school students also held a large costume parade in the Woodward

Parkway Elementary School parking lot. The entire Woodward Parkway student body cheered on the high school students as the 5th grade band marched with the high school seniors.

Parents, teachers and students were all in attendance.

On the Saturday, October 25th, Plainedge Girls Scouts held a camporee in honor of 9/11 hero, Captain Kathy Mazza.

The camporee was held CREATIVE IMPACT - Farmingdale High School Seniors Hailey Timco and Amber at Girl Scouts of Nassau Sommers wearing their AHRC contest-winning T-shirts during the organization’s County Camp Blue Bay annual walkathon event. Their design was selected out over 100 submissions received in East Hampton, New York. The older girls built by the organization.
