Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time

(StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job.

This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families.

One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope.

Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones.

Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas.

Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.”

They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room.

The Charity of the Month for November is

Project 9 Line www.project9line.org

Project 9 Line is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012.

He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life.

Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself.

Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life.

In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible.

In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.”

Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them.

Model Train Show to Benefit Oyster Bay Railroad Museum Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts

coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum.

people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services; its Family Center for Autism, which provides program and services for children, teens and adults on the autism spectrum and Ellies Army, which provides assistance to children with life threatening and their families.

Howitt Middle School Female Soccer Player Assists Football Team

Howitt Middle School’s Football team struggled with an inconsistent kicking game. The solution, eighth-grade soccer player Gianna Recine. Coaches took notice of Gianna’s strong boot while she was practicing with the middle school girls soccer team down at the other end of the field.

“I asked Gianna to come over and practice a few field goal kicks,” said middle school Football coach Colin Leary. “It was obvious she was more than capable.”

After squaring away all the protocols with the Athletic Department and getting her parents’ blessing, Gianna threw on football pads and practiced with the team. The rest is history.

“I’ve heard stories and seen shows about a girl being on the boy’s football team, and it was something that I always wanted to do,” said Gianna Recine. “When I got asked to join the team, I was going crazy with emotions. I was excited, scared, and nervous.”

Gianna went 3 for 3 in extra points in her debut against Oceanside,

“Everyone has been so supportive and helpful during this experience,”

Walsh Invites Families to Fall Dek Hockey Jamboree Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites families to watch the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Deck Hockey League Fall Jamboree and register for the Spring Season on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away. After an exciting fall season, members of the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Dek Hockey League will face off for the championship at the Jamboree on November 13th.

“The Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League provides children aged 6-14 with the opportunity

to improve their hockey skills alongside our expert coaching staff, learn important life lessons like good sportsmanship, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who will compete in the Jamboree!”

While the Jamboree takes place, families can register their children for the Spring 2022 Youth Dek Hockey League. Open to Boys and Girls aged 6-14, the Spring program will feature 10 games and practices over a 10 week period, concluding with a playoff competition: the Jamboree. The Spring Season will begin in April 2022 at Allen and SyossetWoodbury Community

Park. Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The program will cost $95 for residents, and $110 for non-residents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, a list of which will be supplied upon registration.

Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration.

Only checks or money orders made payable to “Town of Oyster Bay” will be accepted. If a session is canceled due to inclement weather, make-up day(s) will be attempted. For more information, please call 516-433-7465 x8234.

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.
