Long Island Cars “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet

On Sunday, October 23rd “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the

50’s, 60’s and 70’s, oneof-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories, collectibles and literature,

plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. You’ll experience live music, fun fair food and more. The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. Congratulations to Farmingdale High School Orchestra Director Thérèse Mannino, a 2022 Manilow Music Teacher Award nominee.

The Manilow Music Teacher Award recognizes an outstanding music teacher who helps to bring music to life for his or her students. It is presented by the Manilow Music Project established by legendary singer-songwriter Barry

Manilow.

Thérèse Mannino was nominated along with only nine other teachers from Long Island for this award. The winner receives a $5,000 cash prize and a $5,000 Manilow Bucks credit that can be used to purchase instruments for their classroom.

“I’m tremendously honored to have been nominated amongst such distinguished music

educators some of whom I know and I have great admiration and respect for them and the work that they do,” said Orchestra Director Thérèse Mannino. “I love what I do and I feel blessed every day to be able to work with some of the brightest and most talented young minds. They truly inspire me and to have the opportunity to give back to these incredible students is pure joy.”

An online voting contest was held and all honorees were invited to attend a Barry Manilow concert with a special backstage meet and greet in August where the winner would be announced. The contest stipulated that in order to be eligible for the prize the honoree must attend the concert and receive the award in person. Unfortunately, Ms. Mannino had travel plans already booked and would not be able to attend, thus disqualifying her.

Farmingdale School District is nonetheless proud of Ms. Mannino’s nomination and is certain that if she were able to attend the concert, the Daler community would have rallied around her and given her enough votes to take the top prize.

STORM SEASON?

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. A PAWSOME NEW PROGRAM - Albany Avenue Elementary has a PAWsome new program. Every Friday, their 6:1:1 classes are visited by Long Island Therapy Dogs. Students are given time to pet, unwind and practice their reading skills with a therapy dog. Residents Invited To Enter Free Holiday Concert Lottery

With the holiday season fast approaching, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to enter a ticket lottery for this year’s Town Holiday Concerts, being held in early December at the Tilles Center at LIU Post in Brookville.

“Due to the overwhelming popularly of these amazing shows, the Town hosts a lottery for residents interested in attending,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “This provides a fair and impartial system that has proven to be successful, and gives all residents an equal opportunity to attend one of our

wonderful performances. As always, this outstanding holiday entertainment is provided free of charge for our residents.”

This year’s Holiday Concerts are scheduled for two evenings: Monday, December 5th and Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30pm; as well as a matinee performance on Tuesday, December 6th at 2pm.

Free Mega Job Fair

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership announced that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Friday, October 28th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins at 9:00 a.m., while doors for General Admission open at 9:30 a.m. The event runs until 1:30 p.m.

Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience.

“We’re proud to have helped thousands of residents find meaningful employment through our career center and private

sector jobs fair,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Workforce Partnership and Town of Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers.”

The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job

opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.
