The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision.

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.

“This festival is a great opportunity for residents to celebrate Halloween and the fall season with activities that are fun for residents of all ages,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Families are sure to enjoy all that the festival has to offer, including pumpkin picking and our popular Halloween hayride. Farmingdale High School Senior Named LIAA Merit Award Winner

Farmingdale High School senior Rebecca Kenjesky has been named a Merit Award Winner by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) for the 2022-2023 school year. Rebecca’s profile will be featured in Newsday for June highlighting her academic and artistic successes in the area of theatre.

Rebecca has been very involved with Farmingdale’s theatre program, performing in the fall musical and spring drama productions. Her credits include Hairspray (Dynamites), Beauty and the Beast (Mrs. Potts), 12 Angry Jurors (Juror #10), Once On This Island (Papa Ge), Puffs (Narrator), and The Little Mermaid (Ursula). Rebecca’s newest role will be Leading Player in Farmingdale High School Playcrafter’s fall production, Pippin.

“Through the course of her four years, I can honestly say Rebecca has worked very hard to

incorporate much of the training taught into her work both in and out of school,” said Farmingdale High School theater teacher Glen Beck. “One can see her using acting beats and verbs in her work and telling the story of the journey of a song. She has listened to constructive criticism and is one to grab every opportunity and use it as a learning tool. Rebecca’s personality and persistence will serve her well in her performance life.”

The LIAA Merit Award is the latest honor stowed upon Rebecca. In 2021 her performance as Mrs. Potts was nominated for and advanced to the final stage of the Roger Rees awards for excellence in student performance. Rebecca also represented Farmingdale at Nassau Community College’s Monologue Competition in 2020 and 2021. Additionally, Rebecca has been selected for the All-National Chorus by the National Association for

Music Education (NAfME). She will perform this November in Maryland at the All-National Music Conference.

“Working with Rebecca has been an absolute joy over the last three years,” said Farmingdale High Schoo teacher and fall musical director Jessica Mischke. “I am continuously impressed with every song she sings and every role she plays. She never ceases to amaze both myself and her peers.”

The Scholar-Artist Awards program, sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA), recognizes students judged to be “the best of the best” on Long Island in academics and the arts. The Scholar-Artist Awards program partners with Newsday to continue this vital program for the 17th year. An Awards Ceremony will be held in the Spring to celebrate this year’s class of ScholarArtists and Merit Award Winners.

Return Of Foodie Week To Help Local Businesses

RETURN OF FOODIE WEEK - Town officials announce the return of Foodie Week at Butera’s of Woodbury, including Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Butera’s of Woodbury owners Laurie and Martin Butera.

Continuing efforts to help restaurants recover from the impact of the pandemic, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce that Foodie Week – a unique opportunity for dining establishments to showcase their worldclass culinary hotspots – will take place from October 16th to October 23rd. This week-long event will highlight the finest culinary creations local chefs, bakers, and artisans have to offer. The announcement was made at Butera’s Restaurant of Woodbury, who will participate in Foodie Week.

“This unique opportunity offers local dining establishments a chance to showcase their world-class culinary hotspots, and highlights the finest culinary creations local chefs, bakers and artisans have to offer. It also provides a fun outing for foodies and families to enjoy the best of the best at local eateries,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Restaurants are vital to our downtowns and crucial to our local economy. Let’s do our part by supporting them at a time when they need it the most.”

Consistent with wellknown New York City standards for similar restaurant promotions, a

Long Island Food Critic panel will curate all participating restaurants and will evaluate them based on the same set of criteria to help ensure that restaurants are of a similar caliber. While there is no charge for dining establishments located in the Town of Oyster Bay to participate, restaurateurs must apply online at www. FoodieWeek.com. Supervisor Saladino also announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will continue its efforts in helping the restaurant industry get back on its feet by expanding outdoor dining through 2023. This expanded outdoor dining initiative will greatly assist the food service industry at a time in which they need it the most. A recent study indicated that 51 percent of adults have said they are not dining out at restaurants as often as they would like, an increase of six percentage points from before the pandemic.

“We have worked tirelessly since this pandemic began to help location businesses come back safely and efficiently,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“We cut the red tape, permitted for new outdoor options for restaurant

patrons and helped restaurant owners reopen safely and successfully. We are pleased to continue with that effort, and will invite restaurants to extend their outdoor dining services through 2021. This way, restaurant owners will be able to use all of the investments they made this year on outside tents, heaters and covers into and throughout next year.”

Councilwoman Maier added, “We hope our residents will join us in supporting our local restaurants this October 16th through 23rd for Foodie Week. Diners will have a chance to sample the best of the best, without the pressure of purchasing a full three course option or other type of old-fashioned Restaurant Week-style promotion. Foodie Week changes that paradigm by celebrating exceptional handcrafted dishes – from farm to table, dock to dish, and grape to glass offerings. Our local culinarians are excited and ready for the fun that Foodie Week will provide, and we encourage the public to get out and support our local restaurants – the heart and soul of our communities.”

On Sunday, October 23rd “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the

50’s, 60’s and 70’s, oneof-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories, collectibles and literature,

plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. You’ll experience live music, fun fair food and more.
