HONEY BEE EXPERIENCE - Girl and Cub Scout Packs from Nassau and Suffolk Counties gather at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, for their 4th Annual Honey Bee Experience on Sunday, September 18th. The free event, which detailed the honey bee’s significance to the park’s gardens, gave children the opportunity to have a safe, up-close look at the 500,000 honey bees that are housed across the park’s six hives. Pinelawn’s Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen, led the 107 scouts in an informative Q&A session to learn more about the environmental benefits of the endangered insect.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free four-session creative arts workshop empowering breast cancer survivors to express themselves using art. This therapeutic program offers a safe place to communicate thoughts, feelings, concerns, problems, hopes and dreams. The professional staff guides participants through different exercises and discussions helping to find ways to gain personal insight and develop new coping skills.

Mindfulness & Spirituality Workshop Through Art For Breast Cancer Survivors Register By October 14

Program, along with Kimberly Newman, BFA, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.

The workshop will take place on four consecutive Thursdays—October 27, November 3, November 10 and November 17— from 10 am to 11:30 am.

All four sessions will start with a relaxation/ breathing exercise. Then participants will complete several creative projects focusing on mindfulness & spirituality. These projects will help reduce negativity and will be self-soothing resulting in stress reduction.

Participants will need computer access with a camera, microphone, and

internet. Each attendee will receive a package in the mail containing: a printed packet outlining each session; printed sheets needed for activities; the zoom link for the workshop; and art supplies. Some additional everyday items will be needed. The packet will list everything needed for each session.

This workshop is free but registration is required and members must commit to

attending the entire four-week-session.

Registration ends on October 14.

The support group is sponsored due to generous funding from the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and New York State.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

Long Islanders Learn About The Importance Of Honey Bees In Our Enviornment

On Sunday, September 18th Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum hosted its 4th Annual Honey Bee Experience to highlight the insect’s importance to Long Island’s ecosystem and to provide guests with the opportunity to have a safe, up-close look at the magnificence of these endangered insects. The event is part of Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum’s ongoing commitment to providing Pinelawn families and community members impactful, educational experiences.

Over 350 community members and 62 Boy and Girl Scouts from 5 local troops gathered on the grounds throughout the day to participate in an in-depth Q&A with Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen to learn more about the honey bee and to enjoy a hands-on learning experience at the hives. Pinelawn provided educational activities such as honey bee arts and crafts, a “Find the Queen,” children’s activity where participants searched for

the queen bee within the observation hive and fresh honey tasting straight from the bee hive frames.

“Honey Bees and other pollinators are in decline. With more and more honey bee species being added to the list of endangered species, it its becoming more necessary than ever to educate the public on how essential these insects are to the beauty of our grounds and to Long Island’s larger ecosystem,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hope all our Pinelawn families and local community members were able to take a moment to admire how beautiful the honey bee is while we shared our own knowledge of their role in our environment.”

Pinelawn’s Honey Bee Hive Program began in 2017 to support the honey bee population and promote pollination.

Across Pinelawn’s six hives, they host over 500,000 honey bees that pollinate the grounds’ beautiful

gardens as well as the surrounding landscape.
