The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own.

This is where Twilight Wish steps in.

Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant.

Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation!

The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple.

You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

Cleaning Up Litter On The Run

On a recent Saturday morning, Farmingdale High School Coach Rich Santa Maria added an environmental twist to his girls’ cross-country training session. During their run—from FHS to Bethpage Park and back— he challenged them to pick up any trash they encountered along the way.

“This team is a rather

energetic bunch and the team captains were eager to get the girls involved in some type of community service,” said Coach Santa Maria.

“The captains were especially helpful throughout the run, and I sweetened the pot by offering a small prize to the group that picked up the most trash by weight.

As a lifelong Daler, it was

really nice to see the girls doing the right thing for the right reasons, and they really put a dent in the litter situation along the trail!”

The girls enjoyed the run so much, they’re planning to do another training/ trash pick-up in the direction of Brady Park. w

AFT President Visits Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, paid a momentous visit to Farmingdale High School on Friday, September 6, 2019. Her trip was inspired

by Cordelia Anthony, a dedicated science teacher and the president of the Farmingdale Federation of Teachers.

Ms. Weingarten spent two hours touring the high school with Ms. Anthony, Superintendent Paul Defendini, Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson, and all the assistant superintendents.

They

took Ms. Weingarten into a variety of classes to meet with students, making stops at an automotive technology class, a culinary lesson, and ultimately, Ms. Anthony’s forensics class.

Ms. Weingarten took time to chat with students and encouraged them to be fully engaged in their education.

Ms. Weingarten was impressed by both the variety and abundance of courses offered at Farmingdale School District, telling Superintendent Defendini, “What you are doing here is everything you want high school to be!”

“It was a really wonderful experience to have the AFT President Randi Weingarten come to recognize the work that I do as the local union president in Farmingdale,” said Cordelia Anthony.

“She not only affirmed me as a labor leader, but as a classroom teacher too.

Her visit also supported the work that our district is doing in terms of providing all students an opportunity to learn from a highly qualified teaching staff and to participate in a wide variety of academic pursuits.”

Students Commemorate Patriot Day In honor of Patriot Day, Gardiners Avenue fifth graders in Melissa Garibaldi’s class participated in an important lesson about Sept. 11. After having a thoughtful discussion on the events that took place 18 years ago, Garibaldi broke the students up into

small groups for an activity about heroes.

The students worked together to brainstorm words that describe a hero.

After writing down their adjectives, one student from each group shared their thoughts with the rest of the class. Following the group activity,

each student received a worksheet and in their own words, described what a hero is to them. They then wrote about who their hero is and why. The lesson allowed students to better understand the men and women who risked their lives on Sept. 11.
