Say What?

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent.

It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused.

Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating.

While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether.

Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy.

Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it?

Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology?

Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics.

Loughlin had a nearperfect score on the PSAT and had a perfect score of

800 in the critical reading and math portions of his SAT. In addition to this latest recognition, Loughlin has also been named an AP Scholar with Distinction and is president of the school’s Quiz Bowl team.

Semifinalists can compete to be named a finalist and continue in the process to receive corporate and

college-sponsored scholarships, as well as the esteemed National Merit Scholarship.

Those advancing to the finalist stage will be notified in February of their standing. The Plainedge School District congratulates Loughlin on this impressive achievement and wishes him continued academic success in the future.

Walk, Run & Ride For Autism for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

“This event is all about coming together as a

community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson.

“It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit thousand of fellow Long Islanders.”

This year’s event Grand Marshals are seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in

order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees.

Registration for the 5K Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. with the run to commence at 9 a.m. The scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park will feature activities for the entire family along the way, followed by a festival

In support of the NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, this year’s budget includes $6 million in NY Works funding to support creating 50 new land and water access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have not reached their full potential.

These 50 new access projects include building new boat launches, installing new hunting blinds and building new trails and parking areas. In addition,

the 2014-2015 budget includes $4 million to repair the state’s fish hatcheries; and renews and allows expanded use of crossbows for hunting in New York State.

Children’s activities will also begin at 10 a.m. and will include pumpkin decorating, a magic show, pony rides and face painting. A casting contest where participants can catch a pumpkin or “hook” a prize will be held by the Knights of Columbus of Seaford. Casting contest prizes are provided by I FISH NY, State Parks, The Fisherman Magazine and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The annual Fall Family Fishing Festival will be held on Saturday, October 18th, at Hempstead Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Peter A. Scully announced today.

DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks).

“The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great sport of freshwater fishing,” Scully said. “As part of Governor Cuomo’s NY is Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, the festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of children’s activities to provide a rewarding family experience.”

No fishing license is required for this event.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Monday, October 6th (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), and Wednesday, October 8th (6 p.m. to 9p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage.

“The Youth Ice Hockey Program provides youngsters, ages three to 13, with the opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches,” Councilman Pinto stated. “The highly regarded program has earned it recognition by the NHL, which has partnered with the Town to promote hockey programming and youth enrichment through its ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative.”

Registrants must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash).

All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration.

Registration fees are as follows: Tot Hockey: $200 for one child being registered (plus $125 for each additional child in the same family), and the Youth Hockey Clinic: $275 for one child being registered (plus $125 for each additional child in the same family) The program is available for players born between January 1st, 2000 and December 31st, 2010 according to the standards

Fall Arts & Crafts This fall, the Town of Oyster Bay is offering a Toddler’s Arts &Crafts program for residents and their children at two Town facilities, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson.

The programs serve as a great bonding experience between parents and children, also helping to develop a child’s sense of creativity.

“The arts and crafts program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to be introduced

to art while, at the same time, providing a great chance to spend quality time with your child,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Toddlers can enjoy a fun-filled class of arts and crafts that will help enhance your child’s creative mind and skills.”

Registration for the Toddler Arts & Crafts program will take place beginning Monday, September 22nd at the Town of Oyster Parks Department recreation office, Town Hall South

(977 Hicksville Rd, Massapequa) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please bear in mind that space is limited.

All applicants must provide a tax bill and/ or utility bill to validate proof of residency along with a birth certificate.

The Arts & Crafts program is meant for two, three, or four year old boys and girls and is open to Town of Oyster Bay residents only. There is a $20 application fee for each child.

The Toddler Arts &

Crafts program runs from October 21st to December 23rd and will be held at either the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room (located in Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue) or the Marjorie R. Post Park Community Room (Unqua and Merrick Roads, Massapequa).

Parents will choose one class per week, per child. Classes for each week include Tuesdays at Marjorie Post at 10

a.m. (two-year olds only) or 11 a.m. (Ages 3 and 4), Wednesdays at TOB Ice Skating Center at 10 a.m. (two year olds only) or 11 a.m. (Ages 3 and 4), or Thursdays at TOB Ice Skating Center (Bethpage) at 10 a.m.(two year olds only) or 11 a.m.

“Residents and their children are sure to find these programs enjoyable,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “As is always the case, a parent or guardian

must be present for the entire class.”
