Town To Host 9/11 & Walls Of Honor Ceremony September 7th At Tobay Beach

Four Additional First Responders And Recovery Worker Names To Be Inscribed On Walls Of Honor Which Feature Heroes Lost To 9/11-Illness

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents to join them at the town’s Annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony scheduled for Thursday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m. at TOBAY Beach.

“This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and to honor those we have lost we invite all residents to join us at our annual September 11th Memorial

Ceremony. This remembrance ceremony features music, religious readings, a light tribute, and a reading of the names inscribed on the town’s 9/11 wall,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We will also unveil new names inscribed on the town’s ‘Walls of Honor,’ recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice due to 9/11-related illness.”

The town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade

Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11-illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.

Free Animal Adoption Month This September At Town Animal Shelter

Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic

Scheduled For September 9th

Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announces that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September.

“I invite and encourage residents looking for a new pet, to check in with the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived. Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion,” said Clerk LaMarca.

During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the

animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit www.oysterbaytown. com.

“In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 9th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary,” said Clerk LaMarca. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. “If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner.”

Once dogs reach four months of age, owners are required to obtain an annual dog license and verification tag. The general license fee is $15 for an unneutered or unspayed dog and $10 for a neutered or spayed dog. There is no fee for licensing a guide dog, hearing dog, service dog, war dog, detection dog or police dog. Fees for senior citizens are $5. Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will help residents hold on to summer a little while longer by extended hours

at TOBAY Beach for two additional weekends after Labor Day – Saturday & Sunday, September 9th and 10th, as well as 16th and 17th. TOBAY will stay

open free of charge those two extra weekends with lifeguards on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“To help our residents enjoy their summers a little longer we will once again be extending summer fun at TOBAY, free of charge, for two additional weekends this year,” said

Supervisor Saladino. “We invite all our residents and their families to come out and enjoy this beautiful facility, take in some nice weather and savor the last of the summer season.”

Residents visiting TOBAY Beach on Sunday, September 10th, can also enjoy the Town’s free,

family fun Waterfront Festival at TOBAY Marina, presented by Optimum. In addition to a free concert featuring Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, the ultimate beach party tribute band to Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and the Zac Brown Band, the day of free family fun will

Howitt Middle School Student Leaders Help Newcomers Transition

The Howitt Middle School Fun Bunch is a remarkable group of student leaders recommended by their teachers. During the summer, the Fun Bunch members engage in teambuilding activities such as relay races, pizza tag, group projects, and tiedying. They also undergo leadership training while

completing about 30 hours of community service. These activities help to sharpen their leadership skills, foster teamwork and prepare them for their responsibilities in the upcoming academic year.

One of the critical responsibilities of the Fun Bunch is to create a welcoming environment for incoming 6th-grade students. The group achieves this by painting hundreds of welcome signs around the school, placing personalized notes in each 6th-grade student’s locker, distributing QR Code magnets with afterschool club schedules, and teaching students how to open combination locks. These small but impactful gestures significantly help students transition from elementary to middle school.

However, the Howitt Fun Bunch volunteers

provide the most impactful community service is the one-on-one tours of HMS. During these personalized tours of student schedules, incoming sixth graders can ask any questions they want about HMS. Our student leaders can demonstrate that HMS is a fun, creative, and friendly school. The tours provide an excellent

opportunity for the students to get a feel for the school environment, ask questions and learn about the school’s culture from their peers. Ultimately, the Fun Bunch is a fantastic initiative that helps students transition to middle school and fosters a welcoming and inclusive school community.

Band Camp

Daler’s Marching Band Prepares For A Note-Worthy New Season

The mini-home band camp at Farmingdale High School is an excellent opportunity for students to prepare for the upcoming season. It not only helps students hone their skills but also provides them with a chance to bond with their fellow band members. The camp instills a sense of camaraderie and team spirit among the students, which is essential for a successful season.

During the camp, students participate in

various activities that help them improve their technique, timing, and precision. They spend hours practicing their music, marching, and choreography to perfect their performances. However, it’s not just about hard work. The students also have a lot of fun during the camp, making memories they will cherish for years.

The importance of hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm cannot be

overstated when it comes to achieving success in anything. The mini-home band camp at Farmingdale High School instills these values in the students and prepares them for the challenges. As a result, the group is poised to make the upcoming season a memorable one, not only for themselves but also for their audience.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s 15th Annual “Walk for Autism” at Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, September 23rd. The walk will benefit Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, one of the leading treatment and outpatient assessment programs for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Supervisor Saladino said, “We are pleased to once again host this event to benefit the Fay J. Linder Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities,

which offers the highest quality, state-of-the-art clinical services to people with Autism Spectrum disorders. From hosting social skill development groups to assisting with medicine management and educating community organizations, Advantage Care Health Center does truly outstanding work in our Town that we invite all residents to support through this walk.”

Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., with the walk commencing at 11 a.m. and a tailgate party immediately following. The registration fee is $10 for individuals and $25 for families. All registrants will receive entrance to the

post-walk tailgate party with refreshments and free T-shirts while supplies last.

Councilwoman Maier added, “It is estimated that 1 in every 54 children in the United States are affected by Autism, and early diagnosis leads to an increased ability to help through intervention services. That’s why this walk is so important, as it increases both education and awareness while bringing our community together.”

residents one last chance to enjoy some free musical entertainment before the fall season officially arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors.

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property.

Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones will perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

“A very special evening was planned where, for the first time, we honored the extraordinary jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn. Each musician has significantly contributed

to the history of jazz and 20th century music and we were honored and humbled to share this history with the community,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing swing as a lasting music style.

The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962 and 2007. Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo, was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits. Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died

on November 5, 1977.
