I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a canine or feline to your family, September would be a great time as the Town is holding its fifth annual “Free Adoption Month” in September. “I invite anyone interested in adopting a pet to visit the Town’s Animal Shelter and see the wide selection of puppies and kittens, as well as older dogs and cats, even some purebreds, available for adoption,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Trained shelter personnel will work with you to make sure the animal you select is appropriate for your family’s lifestyle.” The Councilman went on to say that during September, the Town will waive the usual adoption fee of $80 for dogs and $84 for cats. The standard $10 spay/neuter license fee still

Free Adoptions applies. For seniors, the license fee is $5. Dogs will receive both a rabies and a 5-in-1 shot, while cats will receive a rabies and 3-in1 shot at no charge. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours, but it could mean the difference between life and death to one or more recipients. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of five different people.”

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 121 pints of blood at its August 1st drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives, but summer puts a strain on blood donations, so this kind of response is very heartening,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When broken down into component parts, each pint of blood could potentially help save three lives. That translates into 363 people who could benefit from these donations. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives. “Blood donors are heroes,” said Councilman Muscarella. “They keep our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood. But to have a successful blood drive, it takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with outreach and scheduling appointments. My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes.” Councilman Muscarella said he is already looking to schedule two blood drives for 2014, the dates for which will appear on the 2014 Town Calendar to be sent to all residents at the end of this year. He added that if people missed the Town’s most recent blood drive and would like to donate, they can call the New York Blood Center at 1-800-933-BLOOD, or visit www.nybloodcenter. org. And be sure to use the Town’s group number, 1578, when you call, so the Town gets credit for the blood collected. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder who is there always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every

two to three seconds, someone in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives, the importance of donating blood comes into focus. There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than

two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death. Remember, there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood. More important, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.”

They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The event on September 9th will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. Co-Ed Walking Program Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular and free Co-ed Fall Walking Program is currently underway, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “Walking is an excellent form of exercise that is easy and low-impact that’s suitable for every age,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is an ideal form of activity for males and females for all fitness levels. Response to the Town-sponsored walking programs over the years has been enthusiastic. People join for the exercise, as well as the social aspect. Best of all, you can learn great tips on exercise while getting a workout for free!” The Town’s Fall Co-Ed Walking Program begins Monday, September 9th, and continues through Thursday, October 17th. The program will be held at both Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and

Burns Town Park for a 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. walk.
