Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party.

“Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, but doctors have yet to make any true conclusions

on how to reverse the diagnosis.”

Now in its seventh year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System.

“The center focusses on building awareness to the issue of autism while offering families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research,” Supervisor Venditto said.

Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the

The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach.

“The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.”

The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week.

Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year.

The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident.

In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles.

Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses,

• Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times.

• Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situations that will cause driver distraction.

• Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit.

• Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers.

• Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus.

• Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.

It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing.

Makes for stimulating reading, right?

Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option

of putting a little more thought into it.

Today, not so much.

Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too?

And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails…

Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or

two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore.

It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race.

We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

Children who misbehave may be shunned by other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends.

• Take the friendship lead. As parents, you can improve your child’s chances of making friends by getting friendly with their classmates’ parents.

You do not have to become bosom buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children. Socializing

Students learn lessons each day. While many of these lessons pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships.

In addition to a new curriculum, new teachers and new schedules, kids also might make new friends once a school year begins. While some familiar faces carry through from grade to grade, chances are youngsters will meet new students who will soon become good friends. While many kids find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance so they can make the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that might last a lifetime.

• Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to establish friendships.

Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child.

• Discover common interests. One of the quickest ways to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk Martin, a behavioral therapist and author.

Encourage your child to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests.

Sometimes finding reasons to talk other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier.

On Saturday, September 20th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone.

“For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “All day people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats.

This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.”

went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 677-5853. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. “By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels.

Contrary to what people may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “The

longer this litter remains on our shorelines, the greater the damage will be to the environment.

“If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, I invite you to join us on September 20th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve our environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”

Bluefish Tournament Set If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up for the 29th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 14th, according to Councilman Joe Pinto.

“The Town’s Bluefish Tournament is a great allday sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” Councilman Pinto said, adding that the tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“The entrance fee for the tournament, which is open to anglers of all ages, is $30 for Town residents and $40 for non-residents.

Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early.”

Councilman Pinto went on to say that additional rules for the tournament, which is sponsored by the Town’s Department of Parks and Oyster Bay Marine Supply, are contained in the registration form, which is available at all Town facilities and at Oyster Bay Marine Supply, 294 South Street, Oyster Bay. Councilman Pinto noted that all contestants must be pre-registered.

Free Adoptions This September The Town of Oyster Bay’s Animal Shelter is a sanctuary for many happy and healthy animals in need of a loving home.

This September the Town is holding its sixth annual Free Adoption Month. Any of these loving dogs or felines would be a great addition and even better companion to any home.

Now is the chance to give these animals a chance to be loved, according to Town Councilman Joe Pinto.

“I strongly encourage anyone interested in adopting a pet to visit the Town’s Animal Shelter and see the wide selection of dogs and cats, even some purebreds, available for

The Councilman went on to say that during September, the Town will disregard the usual adoption fee of $80.00 for dogs and $84.00 for cats.

The standard $10.00 spay /neuter license fee still applies. For seniors, the license fee is $5.00. Dogs will receive both rabies and a 5-in-1 shot, while cats will receive rabies and 3-in1 shot at no charge. Both dogs and cats will receive free microchipping.

When you speak to Steven Parrinelli today, you sense a smart, confident young man who is carefully selecting his next moves to achieve his goal of a career in medicine. But as a grammar school student at St. Patrick School in Huntington, Steven hadn’t selected a direction for his life. In fact, according to Steven; “My breakout years didn’t come until I was a high school student.”

Parents That Believed In Catholic School Like many of the students in Catholic elementary schools, Steven started in elementary school because his parents “are strong believers in Catholic education”. The elementary school they selected for Steven, St. Patrick’s in Huntington, reinforced the values they lived at home and was able to provide a great deal of individual attention to Steven’s learning needs.

Steven remembers St. Patrick’s for its small size, for the many friends he made during his time there, and for the strong feeling of community within St. Patrick Parish and School. “St. Patrick’s provided an excellent educational foundation, and I was a good student, but I hadn’t yet gotten competitive about my grades.” said Steven.

The “Breakout” Years Like the overwhelming majority of Catholic

elementary school students, Steven elected to go to Catholic high school and like the most of the students he got his first choice of schools: St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay. It was after mid-term exams in Steven’s first year at St. Dominic High School that he had what he considers his ‘breakout’. The chance to be on the Honor Roll at St. Dominic’s gave him the incentive. The additional recognition each trimester of a Principal’s List Luncheon made it personal. The individual attention he received and the chance to know the teachers from his AP (Advanced Placement) classes personally were some of Steven’s favorite parts of the high school experience.

One Individual Stands Out While the interpersonal relationships Steven enjoyed with his teachers and members of the administration were powerful incentives, one particular relationship stands out. As Steven puts it; “My Global History and US History teacher, Mr. Drysielski, taught me the most valuable skill I mastered in high school.” “He taught me how to express myself better in writing.” Steven continued. “Being a better writer has helped me everywhere.”

Looking Forward

After looking at various college options, Steven was invited by the University of Scranton to visit their campus. In Steven’s words; “I felt like I belonged here.”

The manageable size of the school, the friendly people, and a strong science program were the ‘selling points’. That and the Dean’s Scholarship which will fund half of Steven’s college were all considerations in selecting the University of Scranton.

“I am considering a career in medicine,” said Steven.

“The strong science program at the University of Scranton will help me prepare for medical school.”

My discussion with Steven ended with his rationale for wanting to become a doctor; “I like to help people.” We couldn’t agree more! Steven is a fine example of the academically prepared and spiritually grounded students graduating from Long Island’s Catholic schools.

Organize Your Locker Students learn many important lessons while in middle school and high school. Assignments get progressively more difficult, and students grow accustomed to being independent thinkers and largely responsible for their educational accomplishments.

In addition, students may learn other lessons, such as how organization can play a critical role in success and benefit them both in the classroom and out of it.

Students are typically introduced to lockers during high school or middle school. As elementary school students, kids use classroom desks to store books and supplies, and how desks are organized is

Ready For Kindergarten?

Age 5 is a big year in a child’s life. In many school districts, children enroll in kindergarten shortly after their fifth birthdays. But age alone does not dictate if a child is ready to transition from a preschool environment to kindergarten, and parents may need to work with educators to determine if their children are ready to take the first big step of their academic careers.

Many developmental and education experts believe that numerous factors, in addition to age, determine school readiness, including physical, social and cognitive development.

Many parents want their kids to begin kindergarten at the same time as other kids their age, but

enrolling youngsters before they’re ready could have repercussions for years to come. Students who begin kindergarten before they’re ready may fall behind, resulting in frustration that turns them off from school.

With such significant stakes, parents may want to answer a few questions and look for these generalized kindergarten readiness clues before enrolling their youngsters in school.

• Does my child have solid oral-language skills? Language is more than drilling letters and sight words into a child’s head through repetition.

Language allows kids to share in new experiences and lessons that will expand their vocabularies.

The more kids experience, the more their curiosity grows.

This opens up opportunities for discussion about a variety of topics and introduces words and concepts that may be new and exciting to children. Research indicates one of the best predictors of eventual reading success is a welldeveloped oral vocabulary in kindergarten. Children will retain words if they hear them enough and if they’re used in context and conversation.

• Can my child listen to and follow instructions?

Kindergarten students will be introduced to many foreign things, and some kinds may be in a school environment for the very first time. Teachers will

be issuing instructions and seeking cooperation from the class. To keep up with peers and lessons, kindergarteners will need to be able to remain quiet for extended periods of time, listen to instructions and then properly act on them.

• Is my son or daughter excited about learning?

Some children cannot wait to go to kindergarten, especially those who are excited at the prospect of going to the same school as their older siblings.

Enthusiasm about school and an eagerness to learn and discover new things are indicative of kindergarten readiness. A child does not need to have mastery over every skill just yet, but taking the initiative

to try and ask questions is a good start to successful learning.

• Does my child want to be independent? The phrases “I’ll do it myself” or “I’ll try” can be music to a kindergarten teacher’s ears. Parents may be in a rush and find it easier to dress kids or get them snacks. But doing everything for kids puts them at a disadvantage.

Independent streaks can help kids adjust to school.

Kindergarteners may have to go to the bathroom and wash up independently.

They also may have to fasten buttons, open up lunches and hang up coats.

Children who cannot handle such tasks may struggle to adjust to a school environment.

• Can my child recognize basic letters and numbers?

Children entering kindergarten should know most letters by sight and be able to count to 10.

Preparing for kindergarten can be fun and does not require flash cards or homework.

Encourage kids to count objects in the world around them or do some preliminary reading by recognizing letters on signs at stores or places in the neighborhood.

Kindergarten readiness is determined by a variety of factors, including age, school assessment, enthusiasm about learning, and signs of independence.

organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized requires

some effort and upkeep.

• Color code the locker.

Grouping subjects by color can make it easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. If materials necessary for

math class are colored in red, students can quickly find these materials en route to class.

• Remove trash. Remove anything that does not belong in the locker,
