Director of Science and Health; Principal Trish O’Regan; Assistant Principal Anjany Smar; and Dr. Joan Ripley, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. Together, they worked to secure grants for bus transportation, enlisted daily breakfast/ lunch donations from Island Harvest Food Bank (delivered by the local Stop and Shop) and created a community partnership with KPMG. Through their KPMG Family for Literacy program, the firm generously donated 400 books, backpacks, and notebooks and crayons as incentives for students to read. Students were free to choose whatever books interested them, and take them home to add to their

home libraries and share with their families.

“KPMG is committed to helping eradicate childhood illiteracy,” said Jim Leslie, a KPMG Partner in the firm’s Long Island office. “Through our partnership with First Book, we were happy to donate the books and other school supplies that these children need in order to combat the summer slide and prepare them for the upcoming school year.”

Camp time was spent doing hands-on experiments and learning new vocabulary words.

STEAM activities were organized by one of the high school physics teachers, who was the STEAM consultant, and carried out by the library media specialist, all with a

central focus on building literacy. Students also built social-emotional skills during organized recess time with the help of their teachers and social worker.

Several Saltzman faculty members were a part of the program—which allowed some students to meet their future teachers in advance and begin building relationships.

The district also partnered with Molloy College and Hofstra University to bring in student teachers.

This lowered the studentteacher ratio, making it a win-win for everyone.

Farmingdale High School and Weldon E. Howitt Middle School have had educational summer programs in place for several years, but this was the first time

a Farmingdale elementary school found a way to put all the pieces together that would allow them to implement an extensive summer learning initiative.

“This was the best symphony of what a school district can do,” said Dr. Anisansel. “We’re really proud of this.”

To celebrate the last week of camp, KPMG sponsored a visit from the Kona Ice Truck. All the students were thrilled to choose flavors and spend time together enjoying a treat.

Administrators plan to continue the summer camp next year in hopes of making it a permanent program.

Evidence proves that students who find a way to maintain their reading skills over

the summer are better prepared for a successful academic year.

The success of this year’s program might even pave the way for the other elementary schools in the district to implement their own summer camp programs in the future.

“This program kept students engaged in meaningful reading activities with a STEAM theme all summer long.

The fact that we were also able to add to the home libraries means that the excitement that was built around reading can continue for the next few weeks until school begins,” said Principal Trish O’Regan.

“It far exceeded my expectations!”

Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently completed a successful inaugural Summer Literacy Camp!

The five-week literacy camp was offered to select Saltzman elementary students (4 days a week/3 hours per day), designed to increase language skills and prevent the summer slide that many children experience during the months when school is out of session.

Over eighty children— grades one through five—participated in what can best be described as a hands-on, engaging learning experience for all!

The camp was the brainchild of Dr. Josh Anisansel, Director of Secondary ELA and ENL; Kristen Cummings,

Michael Yannotti, owner and head trainer of Camo Crossfit in Farmingdale. Michael has been a longtime advocate of veterans and has been exemplary in his efforts to support veterans in every way possible. As a successful local businessman, Michael has conducted many veteran fundraisers and hired veterans. One of the fundraisers he and his team help orchestrate honors and raises awareness for veterans and fallen heroes. The event, which honors 24 Heroes over 24 Hours, raises money for veterans in need and remembers those who have sacrificed. Michael also supports our community’s first responders through fitness and employment. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Labriola commended Michael Yannotti for his tireless advocacy efforts on behalf of our veteran community, and presented him with a citation.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children.

A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners.

Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra.

Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York.

Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia.

The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year.

Creating And Innovating More than 100 children from the Levittown School District discovered the wonders of the world at Camp Invention, a twoweek summer science program that promoted learning through handson inquiry.

The camp at Wisdom Lane Middle School, was open to students entering third, fourth and fifth grades. Program coordinator Siobhan Schneider said that the activities were designed to help children develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, work as a team and think strategically.

In Deep Sea Mystery, each group had to create a seaworthy vessel using only supplied materials.

At the end, the boats were placed into a pool of water and weight was added to see how long they could stay afloat. Students also participated in a fossil dig and navigation-based

activities.

Children became inventors in the Innovation Force workshop. Each group had to make a device that could grab objects from a distance. They learned about the invention process from coming up with an idea, to building a prototype, to securing a patent. DYI Orbot was a robotics-based course with different challenges.

Students designed bridges and tunnels to have their robots pass over and under and built towers to knock over. A favorite activity was when students attached markers to their robots and moved them over a piece of paper to create art.

Farm Tech allowed students to create a high-tech farm with machines that prepared soil, pollinated crops and launch bales of hay.

Children accomplished these missions using programmable robots. The outdoor Camp Invention

Games station featured activities that had scientific themes, such as animals, space and the weather.

There were plenty of water games to keep cool, like Kangaroo in which children had to hop across the field with a bucket of water balloons and keep them from falling out.

The stations were led by Levittown teachers, with support from high school counselors. The program totaled 35 hours of fun and education during the 10 days.

Fifth grader Paul Siegel, from Gardiners Avenue School, attended Camp Invention for the first time and said it was a worthwhile experience.

“It’s very exciting and I’m glad all of my friends are here,” he said. “I like making stuff and playing games. Everything that we do is so creative, and I love it.”
