Pravato Advises Late General Taxpayers Of Last Chance

To assist property owners who missed the August 10th deadline for paying their 2023 General taxes, Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that they can still pay the bill August 31st with the State mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at (516) 624-6400 if

they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises

homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.

Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

The Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main Street, will hold a Remembrance Service at 9:30AM on Sunday, September 10, 2023, the 22nd anniversary of 9-11. Following the

service everyone is invited to honor the day by laying flowers around the Memorial Tree dedicated to Lt. Christopher P. Sullivan, FDNY, who generously led our Nursery School children in fire safety.

Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.

This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those

first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids triathlon on Long Island with 135 participants in 2022, and an expected attendance of 200 racers this year. To register for Mini Maniac, visit www.runsignup.com/ minimaniac. Registration ends on September 15, 2023 at 1:30 PM EDT

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and nonbreast cancer survivors— are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was lifealtering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our

new book club.

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind of help to others. I do peer support for two women—linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Although I don’t have

breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.

The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.

Giving Multiplied With School Supplies For Children Overseas

As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of back-to-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents in Farmingdale are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.

For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin Thomas, a shoebox recipient in Southeast Asia whose parents could not afford the supplies needed for school. Thomas remembers the specific day he received a gift-filled shoebox from Operation

Christmas Child and found it filled with toys and most exciting to him—school supplies!

Growing up with handme-down clothes and used items, Thomas used to write with a pencil so short that he held it using a pen cap. Having an entire packet of new pencils and a pencil sharpener all his own was a treasure to him. This simple gift made a life-changing impact for Thomas because it opened the doors for him to receive an education.

Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who

had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Zoom Workshop: Nutrition And Healthy Living A Free Forum For Breast Cancer Survivors

“Surviving Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle” is a free forum to be held on Friday, September 22 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and

more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and

served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (check-in begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach

Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones.
