Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and local restaurant owners today announced an innovative, new shell recycling initiative to strengthen our local marine environment. Under this program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables. Town aqua-culturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells will be strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors. “The shells from your dinner plate provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow as they offer protection from predators and weather conditions,” said Supervisor Saladino. “My administration is committed to improving water quality, expanding the shellfish population and bettering our environment. The Junior Triathlon will take place on Saturday, August 27th for children ages 8-13 and the TOBAY Triathlon for individuals and relay teams with participants 14 years or older, will be on Sunday, August 28th.
The Triathlon will commence at Theodore Roosevelt Park on Sunday, August 28th with the transition area opening at 5:30 a.m. The first wave will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a ½ mile swim in the Oyster Bay Harbor. Following the swim will be a 12.3-kilometer bike ride through Oyster Bay and Oyster Bay Cove, followed by the final 5-kilometer run that will return participants to Theodore Roosevelt Park for a concluding awards ceremony and raffle drawing. Participants in the Junior TOBAY Triathlon should arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27th for a 200-yard swim, 2.5-mile bike and a 1-mile run. “The triathlon begins with a halfmile swim in the calm waters of the harbor, followed by a beautiful bike ride and scenic run,” added Councilman Labriola. “All participants will receive shirts and custom finisher medals, and Town residents receive a discount on registration.”Packetpick up for both races will take place on Thursday, August 25th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Runner’s Edge located at 242 Main Street in Farmingdale or Saturday August 27th, for the Triathlon at Theodore Roosevelt Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If participants wish to pick up their packet on Sunday morning, there will be an extra $10 charge. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of donors to receive lifesaving blood donations, but these factors have caused the blood supply to become unstable. The blood supply currently stands at a 1-2-day level, which is well below the ideal level of 5-7-days. NYBC is partnering with local breweries for their “Pint for a Pint” campaign, which runs from August 1st – September 10th at all donor centers and community blood drives. As a part of this campaign, all presenting blood donors will receive a voucher to redeem a free pint of beer, cider, wine, or soft drink at their local participating brewery or restaurant. Since March 2020, the number of first-time donors has dropped dramatically and creative campaigns like “Pint for Pint” aim to raise awareness as well as amplify the need for new bloodTwenty-fivedonors. establishments are participating in this campaign across the region.
