The Charity of the Month for August is

Long Island Live Steamers www.lilivesteamers.org

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulfillment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations.

Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.

Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest.

Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride.

Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend.

Attendees can bring their own food and/ or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! Want to volunteer? Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals. Although, anyone willing to learn about the club’s operations and donate a little of their spare time to help out with various tasks is welcome!

PSEG Long Island is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer.

The company’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year.

Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.

PSEG Long Island’s systems have undergone upgrades, performance tuning and numerous tests.

“We are prepared and ready to respond,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and chief operating officer, PSEG Long Island. “PSEG Long Island is committed to continually improving system reliability and enhancing the experience our customers have when they connect with us, and we have been working nonstop to fulfill that commitment.

PSEG Long Island continues to make strategic investments to serve our customers today and in the future.”

IT Systems Enhancements and Testing Success PSEG Long Island has continued to make enhancements to its IT systems and has conducted robust testing of the outage management and telephony systems. Recently, PSEG Long Island completed a successful end-to-end test of the version 5.5 outage management and telephony systems in an extreme weather scenario. This endto-end test is in addition to other successful tests, which included one simulating up to 90% of the customer base reporting outages over a 24hour period.

Business Continuity and Emergency Procedures PSEG Long Island updated its business continuity and emergency procedures to reflect changes and

updates to address PSEG Long Island’s response in the event of a failure of critical systems. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has conducted three drills of these procedures with its dedicated workforce.

Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology.

PSEG Long Island’s recent infrastructure improvements include: New transformers installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Culloden Point, Roslyn, Far Rockaway and Flowerfield substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand 4 new distribution feeder lines installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Roslyn and Flowerfield areas to accommodate load growth 6 distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability A new transmission circuit installed between the Riverhead and Canal substation A transmission circuit upgraded between the Wildwood and Riverhead substations Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Stormhardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in

storm damage and 42% fewer outages.

PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional 59 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. Work on the first circuits began in April 2020 and will continue over the next five years.

To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways.

PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summerpeak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

Saladino Announces Return of Youth Dek Hockey League Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town’s Dek Hockey League will return for the fall season. The league will kick off this September and is open to boys and girls aged 6-14.

Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season.

The season will feature 10 games and practices over a 10-week period concluding with a playoff competition.

“Boys and girls aged 6-14 who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons like good sportsmanship from our talented and dedicated coaching staff,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who

will give this program a try!”

Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Tuesday, August 17th from 4:30PM-8PM, and at Syosset Woodbury Community Park (In the Skatehouse) on Wednesday, August 18th from 4:30PM8PM. In the interest of serving the Farmingdale community, the Women’s Club of Farmingdale is always looking for new and interesting ways to fundraise. One of the club’s newest members, Nancy Carman, had the perfect solution for a beautiful summer night – Night at the Movies. The rain ended early, the outdoor canopies went up, the popcorn, candy and soft drinks trays came out and guests paid a minimal entrance fee which included the snacks and several raffle tickets.

Amidst Nancy’s beautiful flower beds and vegetable garden, the ladies enjoyed watching “Calendar Girls” on a large outdoor

screen. Many thanks to Nancy, her husband, Jim, and son, John, for setting up the movie screen and speakers and making sure everything was working properly. Club President Tina Diamond and Ways & Means Committee Chair Vicky Impollonia and her committee prepared the snack tracks and soft drinks and made sure that guests enjoyed a variety of desserts. And, of course, the raffles were a big hit.

United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families.

Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account.

“United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their

appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island.

Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts. United Way of Long Island has helped seniors, veterans and families receive emergency financial assistance, fresh groceries, PPE items and HEPA air purifiers to improve their health, well-being and financial security during the pandemic.
