The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. The Bethpage Union Free School District held its annual reorganization meeting on July 9.

Superintendent of Schools David Schneider was sworn in for his second year, and reelected board members John Lonardo, Christina Scelta and Marie Swierkowski took oaths of office for threeyear terms through June 30, 2022.

Behind nominations and unanimous elections, Michael Kelly and Sandra Watson were elected as board president and vice president, respectively.

This will be Kelly’s ninth straight term as president and 10th consecutive year that Watson will serve as vice president.

Fifth grade classes at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Charles Campagne Elementary School welcomed Bethpage High School seniors as an audience for their Be an Expert project presentation.

Fifth graders recently took part in the construction of projects in which they shared their “expertise.” Students started research and studying on topics after Be an Expert materials were distributed a few weeks prior. Categories included baseball, the planets, the civil war, the ocean and Resistance Fighters. Students read books to grow their knowledge of the specific theme.

The culmination of the projects came on June 17 as high school students visited classrooms to witness their younger peers’ learning and growth. The seniors were also able to join the fifth graders in participating in Kahoot quizzes, GRAND-OPENING CELEBRATION - On July 28th Orangetheory Fitness opened which tested them on the newly a brand new studio in Airport Plaza, Farmingdale. Their grand-opening celebration acquired information following ran from 12 pm - 4 pm and included music from KJOY 98.3 FM, raffles for St. Mary’s the presentations.

John participated in a series of timed events related to his course of study at Barry Tech, as well as in contests in leadership and professional development.

As an officer at the national level, he will serve as a leader, communicator, advocate and facilitator for SkillsUSA. The state competition is one in a national series of events SkillsUSA sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce.
