One Town, One Book For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, as was announced by Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, the program has

returned with a new focus, as ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ The program, which kicked off at the end of May, runs through the summer. “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of

community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. I am both proud and excited to have it return this summer

Blood Drive Set Every person donating blood at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Semi-Annual Blood Drive slated for Thursday, August 7th, will have the opportunity to help those who are in need of blood, according to Councilman Joseph Muscarella. “With summer in full swing, our attention tends to focus on barbecues, going to the beach, taking a vacation and the other

pleasures of the season, so donating blood is not generally on our minds.” Councilman Muscarella has worked closely with Supervisor Venditto for many years on the Town’s blood drive. “The need for blood is continual, though, and the summer usually puts a strain on supplies. Donation drives, such as the ones sponsored by the Town, account for a large

percentage of the blood collected by Long Island Blood Services. Without adequate assistance from volunteer blood donors, LIBS cannot meet its vital, life-saving mission and ensure quality health care delivery.” “Blood banks need to be prepared 365 days a year,” Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto said. “That is why people

should always donate whenever they can. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure. All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures

an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different people.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that the locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m.

Blood Drive Set Continued From 7 Councilman Muscarella added that in order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old…16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note… weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. The Councilman noted that all blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative. The Town will provide

More than twodozen Suffolk County Community College students will return to Long Island today after completing a fourweek long Study Abroad program in Sorrento (Italy) where they studied Intercultural Communication and Italian language at the renowned Sant’Anna Institute. The students were immersed in programs taught by a combination of local Italian scholars and Suffolk County Community College faculty in classes attended by students from across the globe. The students also were given the opportunity to learn and immerse themselves in local culture, sample local delicacies and tour Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Amalfi Coast, visit the ruins of Pompei and climb Mt. Vesuvius. The students were led by Suffolk County Community College Associate Professor of Italian and adviser to the College’s Italian Club Annamaria Monaco, who was recently elected president of the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI). “The overseas study experience does not end when students return to campus,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. Team Registration Underway Canstruction® Long Island, Inc., one of the country’s most unique food charities has opened registration for teams to compete in its 2014 design competition to help fight hunger here on Long Island. The organization raises public awareness and fills the shelves of local food banks through this annual event comprised of sculptures made entirely of non-perishable cans of food. “Through the spirit of competition, we are excited to engage the A/E/C community in our shared mission to

fight hunger here in our region,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island, Inc. “We are especially happy to welcome back our past teams, and look forward to welcoming new organizations and schools in this year’s competition.” Registration is open until August 22nd for teams to compete in the design competition. Participants can be members of Architectural, Engineering or Construction Firms and their vendor firms, students at colleges

with Architectural, Engineering or Construction Degree Programs, middle to high school students and members of community groups. Canstruction® Long Island is also looking for sponsors who would like to promote their products and services to Long Island’s leading Architectural, Engineering and Construction firms – all while helping to feed the hungry on Long Island. Since 2007, Canstruction® Long Island has held its annual competition where teams of design and construction professionals, college students and middle and high school students led by architects and engineers, showcase their talent and creativity by creating giant, selfsupporting structures out of cans of nonperishable food. Student Teams are mentored by professionals in the architecture, engineering, design and construction fields, which provides the younger students with exposure

to these potential career fields at an early age, and gives the older students an opportunity to develop relationships with professionals that they can possibly intern or interview with in the future. The structures are on display to the public for 10 days, after which the cans are donated to Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to feed the more than 300,000 Long Islanders that are affected by hunger and/or food insecurity. Attendees are asked to bring one can of food for admission

to the exhibit to also be used cast their vote for the “People’s Choice” Award. As one can equals one vote, the public is encouraged to bring multiple cans of food to cast as many votes as they like.
