You’re not going to be visiting neighborhoods around West Point any time soon. Nor will you see a bucolic Montpelier, Vermont this summer. Both of these communities…. and many more….. have witnessed unprecedented flooding over the last few weeks. They are not in flood zones nor are they low lying areas. And, incidentally, Homeowner insurance will not pay for losses.

You may not live in a flood zone. This does not mean you can’t be flooded or that you are adequately insured. One-in-five floods do not happen in a flood zone. The flooding up north is not such an anomaly as you might think. Remember, NYC witnessed such a flood in the spring of 2022.

Town To Host Empire State Ride Long Island To End Cancer

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Town Receiver Jeff Pravato to announce the Town’s partnership with Empire State Ride Long Island to host Long Island’s largest charitable bike ride to benefit cancer research, scheduled for Saturday, July 22nd. Town officials were joined by Empire State Ride Founder Terry Bourgeois, Director of Thoracic Oncology and Clinical Research at the Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital Dr. Ashish Sangal, and Michael Seecharan, an inspiring lung cancer survivor who has participated in a clinical trial funded by events like the Empire State Ride.

“We are thrilled to once again partner with Catholic Health on Long Island and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, to raise this important funding to support

cancer research and clinical trials,” said Supervisor Saladino. “All course routes begin in downtown Oyster Bay and feature a ride through beautiful beaches, woodlands, and historic destinations – including Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill – in and around the Town of Oyster Bay’s exquisite north shore. With two wheels, our residents can change the world!”

The event features three course lengths for riders of all ages and ability. All routes will begin on Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, by the historic Oyster Bay Post Office. For those who can’t cycle but wish to attend and support the event, downtown Oyster Bay will also host a street fair, hosted in partnership with the Oyster Bay Main Street Association and Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce –as local businesses will line the streets with food, live music and fun activities for

The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance

Women’s Club Of Farmingdale Donates To Long Island Coalition For The Homeless

Through the efforts of Women’s Club of Farmingdale member, Angelina Dunlop, club members met with Bailey Riekkinen, Director of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH). On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, they delivered over three dozen bags and boxes of accepted items to their Amityville location.

The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or find rental units quickly enough in a high cost/ low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. For

both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months, on average, with some households remaining homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent housing.

LICH has expanded services to continually align with local community needs. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking, all parts of what has become the local “Coordinated Entry System.” Coordinated Entry is a person-centered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services and

prioritizes those homeless longest and most in need of housing and support.  LICH provides a special Distribution Center, a “Boutique”, that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items. These clothing options can range from casual to business attire. All items are free! Clothing is available in all sizes: infant through adult and everything in between. Other items include nonperishable food items and household items, i.e. new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, 600 Albany Avenue, Amityville, the Boutique is open on

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10AM3PM by appointment only. Appointments can be made to “shop” or pick-up from the Boutique by calling 631-464-4314.

Items which are given away at the Boutique are all donated by people and organizations in the community yearround with the help of generous volunteers in the community who host drives for us at their schools, places of business, places of worship, and among friends and family.
