with Jamie Lynn Ryan “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best.

We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know.

The rest is mere wistfulness.

This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop

for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really.

My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present.

I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours.

I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air?

Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life.

And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ...

Nothing, so far as I can tell.

There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Cast and crews have been busy since June.

Music, choreography, program, costumes and sets are in the works to bring Reel Magic, featuring selected songs from movie musicals like Sister Act, Mary Poppins, State Fair, Easter Parade and Gigi, (and a few hidden gems), to the St. Kilian stage.

Performance dates are: July 28th (8 p.m.), July 29th (3 p.m.), August 3rd (8 p.m.), August 4th (8 p.m.) and August 5th (3 p.m.).

Headed to Junior Olympics Twins Sarah and Kaitlyn, age 10, are sport stackers.

They stumbled upon the sport on Youtube, and began by stacking red solo cups.

Sport stacking (also known as cup stacking or speed stacking) is an individual and team sport that involves stacking 9 or 12 specially-designed cups in pre-determined sequences as fast as you can.

Both girls will be attending the Jr. Olympics, held in DesMoines Iowa on July 27th-28th.

Kaitlyn, who began competing in tournaments before her twin, is a member of Team USA and currently holds the Divisional Regional records in the 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and cycle events.

Together, the girls hold the Divisional regional record for doubles.

The sport is growing in popularity, and there is a sport stacking team at Howitt Middle School, which the girls will attend in September.

This year, State Teams were formed. Sarah is a New York State Team Member, and hopes to one day join her sister on Team USA. This will be Kaitlyn’s second time at the Jr. Olympics and Sarah’s first.

Named to Task Force The NEST Food Pantry at NCC has been identified by the New York State Governor’s office as a model site to which other campuses should look for guidance.

Nassau Community College faculty members Profs.

Sharon Masrour, Valerie Fasanello and Helen Rice - all deeply involved in running The NEST - have been chosen by SUNY Albany to be members of the Food Insecurity Task Force. Additionally, the three professors have been asked to take leadership positions as Co-chairs of the Task Force’s Campus Involvement Committee.

John Graham, who heads the Task Force in Albany, recognizes The NEST as an exemplar for supporting typically underserved members of our campus communities.

The State University of New York recently launched its Food Insecurity Task Force of higher education leaders and students from across the university system, along with experts in the fields of diet and nutrition, campus food service, financial aid, food waste prevention, and nutritional research, among others. The group will build resources and support in alignment with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s “No Student Goes Hungry Program,” a comprehensive program to provide all students with access to healthy, locally sourced meals from kindergarten to college.

Begun in fall 2013, The NEST at NCC distributes about 1,500 pounds of food, personal hygiene items, school supplies, baby items and household

necessities every week during the academic year.

It’s open to all members of the campus community.

Funded entirely through donations, The NEST works closely with Island Harvest and LI Cares as well as other partnerships throughout the local community. The NEST had approximately 2,100 guest visits this academic year (from September to May). Volunteers from the College staff the pantry. It plans to soon expand its services to offer clothing; the teaching of resume writing and interviewing skills; literacy workshops and many additional services.

STUDENTS OF THE QUARTER - Three students from the Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment were named Students of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech career and technical education high school. Ricardo Paiva Candido, Ana Salazar and Evelyn Sanchez were all honored for their grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Students of the Quarter have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for their fellow students, in both the classroom and the workplace.

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has selected two outstanding high school journalists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., to join its 2018 Robert W. Greene Institute for High School Journalists.

Taylor Yon, 16, and Zoe Gordon, 15, rising juniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will join 24 other student journalists this July at Stony Brook University where they will spend a week working in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom, producing content across several media platforms. The annual journalism boot camp, which celebrates its 10th year this summer, honors the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and editor at Newsday.

The Press Club of Long Island is sponsoring Yon’s and Gordon’s participation. Press

Club President Scott Brinton said he is sure Yon and Gordon’s presence will inform any discussion or reporting on gun violence in America.

“I personally covered the wave of student protests on Long Island after the mass shooting in Parkland and saw firsthand the profound effect that the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had on their peers here,” Brinton said. “I’m sure Zoe and Taylor will have an equally profound impact on the student journalists at the Greene Institute.”

Yon and Gordon were staff writers for the high school newspaper, the Eagle Eye, during the 2017-2018 school year. On February 14th, 2018, their lives and roles as student journalists were transformed when 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school.

Despite the tragic events, the Eagle Eye staff persevered and continued their mission, reporting on the event and its aftermath.

Gordon, who will be an editor at the Eagle Eye next year, said it was a “truly odd” experience to be a grieving student and a student journalist.

“We knew that we were trained to tell stories so we felt like we had to - it was an instinct,” Gordon said.
