Michael Romani of the Farmingdale UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Robert Williams School, earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of Michael’s remarkable attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. Board members, administrators, staff and family were on hand to celebrate at a special ceremony earlier this spring.

Since coming to Robert Williams, Michael has learned how to deal with challenges he faces.

Michael has learned how to maintain calm while competing, keeping a positive attitude and demonstrating team spirit. He is an exceptional athlete and excels in almost any sport. Yet, though he is an intense competitor with relentless determination, he has matured over the years in his ability to demonstrate good sportsmanship and to

manage the frustrations of defeat.

Michael will take any opportunity to get involved in his school community, and eagerly accepts almost any responsibility presented to him. He has worked to conquer his innate shyness in order to join the school newsroom. He has learned to regulate his cognitive rigidity and sensory issues to work in the school café, where he helps to prepare and deliver food, as well as to clean up. He also works in the school garden, tending the soil, weeding, and cultivating and harvesting crops.

Michael is an enthusiastic cheerleader for his fellow students and genuinely supports their efforts. He loves seeing his peers perform and, win or lose, applauds their attempts. He enjoys socializing, and engages teachers and staff in friendly conversation about whatever he can, from the latest news to high school sports.

“Michael has a pure heart,” said his award nominator. “There is

nothing that can stand in the way of his doing what he feels is right. He is very respectful of others, and works hard to meet his personal challenges in order to pursue his goal of being a reliable student and friend.”

“Not only do these students demonstrate the very best of Nassau BOCES, each of them has also shown the true spirit of George Farber,” said James Widmer, Deputy Superintendent. “They all have passion, determination, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship, and willingness to help others. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”

For the past 16 years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

The $1,000 Abigail E. Leonard Award (founder of the WCF) has been

presented every year since 1920 to a student who encompasses Ms. Leonard’s leadership in character, educational excellence, and civic and humanitarian interests. This year the award was presented to Andrew Aldieri.

Another $1,000 award presented annually is the Women’s Club of Farmingdale Award. The recipient must be in good standing in school and extra-curriculars and this year’s recipient is Vincent Grauso. Other WCF awards

included a $600 Carla Peipert Art Award presented to Angelina Frangipana who plans to continue her education in the field of art and a $500 Joseph P. Connolloy Award to Emily Peteka, a student in good standing in school and extra-

curriculars.

The club also presented a $1,000 Carla Peipert Family Art Award to Amya Johnson.

Pravato Reminds Residents To Avoid Penalties By Paying General Taxes

Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2023 General Tax Levy is due on July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 10th.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid. So make your payment before August 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open at both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card. On August 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771-

1539. Please make your check payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes and indicate your property’s Section, Block and Lot and telephone number on the check.

Tax payments may also be made online through a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Residents may view tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment for a fee of $1.75, or by credit card (for a much higher fee, charged by credit card companies). The Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.

Town Partners With U.S. Marine Corps To Install Wheelchair Lift

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with the United States Marine Corps to install a wheelchair lift for disabled veterans to more easily access the Marines Corp League Sunrise Detachment on New York Avenue in Massapequa. The Saladino administration

was awarded $9,500.00 in Federal funding for the project, providing the lift at zero cost to the Town of Oyster Bay and Marine Corps League. The lift was built entirely by veterans, as the manufacturer for

the project, Bruno, is a Made in America VeteranFounded Company and the installing contractor, Patriot Mobility, is a Veteran-Founded Veteran Operated Local Company. Supervisor Saladino

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Announces 2023 Event Schedule

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class arboreta, announces its 2023 event schedule.

Included in the calendar are the park’s many educational outdoor programs that celebrate the importance of various beloved insect species including ladybugs and honey bees, and the vital role they play in the environment.

For the first time, Pinelawn will also host Jazz

Under the Stars honoring some of the great jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn, including John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians.

Pinelawn’s Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet, is comprised of three distinct collections including the Noteworthy Collection, the Primary Collection and the General Collection. The Noteworthy Collection includes the Arboretum’s highest quality and most

historically significant stately and mature specimens, including 10 of its highest priority and valued trees. The Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, has a crown size spread of 74 feet with its enormous, shapely mound of sweeping, pendulous branches and hanging branchlets. Pinelawn’s Weeping Beech is considered priceless. Pinelawn’s Nikko Maple, its rarest, is a species which originated in the high mountains of Japan and its Katsura features heartshaped leaves which in the Spring, emerge as purple.

Pinelawn has multiple large Katsura trees situated in one location, which is rather uncommon.

Pinelawn’s appreciation of history can be seen in the many historical monuments featured within the park, including the Statue of Normandie and the Garden of Freedom’s Jefferson colonnade, which is inscribed with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and its signers in gold leaf. The Garden of Normandie is home to the Statue of Peace, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast in modern times. The refurbished, softly glowing, ton-and-a-half bronze

establishes the serene mood of the garden.

Another significant piece on the property is the John Donne Memorial which was the first monument created for Pinelawn by designer, Ismar David in 1965, who then went onto design much of Pinelawn’s park area, helping to create the beauty that Pinelawn is known for today. The Fountain of Peace, which is set within an 11-acre garden, was also designed in part by Ismar David, and resides among eight stately 40-foot tall Georgia Marble columns, discovered in Atlanta by Pinelawn where

they adorned the Federal Reserve Bank for decades.

Back again by popular demand is the 3rd annual Lantern Lighting Celebration, an evening where families can enjoy live music and a fairy-tale atmosphere consisting of string lights and candles. The event features a picnic-like setting where participants can personalize a floating lantern with heartfelt messages to their loved ones and hear their loved one’s name read aloud in a beautiful ceremony as they release their floating lantern within the Rose Garden Fountain.
