Race To Save The Sea Turtles! 2023

Paddle Battle LI Event

Saturday, July 29th

The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY.

It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race

designed for teams of four competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue Center, a not-forprofit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. Life vests are required; all participants must wear their own PFD (personal floatation device) during the race. Complete pre-registration details are at PaddleBattleLI.com or

Summer ‘Movies By Moonlight’

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board announce that free ‘Movies by Moonlight’ will be offered in local parks on Thursday evenings this summer, beginning July 6th and concluding on August 10th. Residents are welcome to bring blankets and chairs when attending these family-friendly movies.

“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer as the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We’re thrilled to once

again show family-friendly films at our local parks, along with character meet and greets, inflatables, free popcorn, food trucks, games, and more. Join us at these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”

The Village of Farmingdale is in full bloom with hundreds of spectacular flowers and plantings throughout the Village, downtown, and parks. Village Trustee Cheryl Parisi, oversees the Village Beautification committee, comprised of community volunteers and junior members of the Village Fire Department. They do an amazing job planting flowers, hanging baskets and more. Special thanks to Trustee Cheryl Parisi for her ongoing beautification efforts, and to All of the Village beautification committee volunteers, DPW, the Fire Department and Juniors for their wonderful planting efforts.

It’s been an eventful spring so far with good weather for recent events. The Mustang & Shelby Club of Long Island (MSCLI) held a successful charity car show on May 13th - a spectacular array of entries - 144 cars participated. We were thrilled to host the charity car club event. The club donated $2,250 to the Farmingdale Union Free District Community Assistance Fund and also had a 50/50 raffle benefiting the North Shore

The Memorial Day Parade / Ceremony was a wonderful salute to honor and remember Veterans that served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Special thanks to: all Veterans, Heroes the local VFW / American Legion, Groups, Marching Bands, all that participated, attended, and the Farmingdale Fire Department.

The community enjoyed the 3rd Annual Farmingdale Medieval History Day and the Farmingdale Fire Department’s Spring Street Fair/Fire department open House/ Bonsai exhibit on June 3rd. Special thanks to the Farmingdale Village Cultural Arts Committee, John Capobianco, The Canton of Lions End /SCA and the Farmingdale Fire Department.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home.

Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Hosts 35th Annual Drinking Water Tasting Contest

In honor of National Drinking Water Week, the Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) hosted its 35th annual drinking water tasting contest at Farmingdale State College from Tuesday, May 9 to Wednesday, May 10. Sixteen water providers from across Long Island vied for the title of best drinking water in Nassau County and Suffolk County, respectively.

“We were eager to bring back this incredible tradition,” said LIWC Chairman John Kilpatrick. “This event not only determines our winners but also provides wonderful engagement with the public, who decide our champions. By establishing these crucial lines of communication, we can best enhance the knowledge of the public on the water industry and ensure they understand how

our systems serve them.”

More than 200 participants voted for their favorite tasting water and received exciting giveaways. In addition, LIWC representatives educated attendees on the water delivered to the homes and answered questions on the treatment methods maintaining Long Island’s high-quality drinking water.

This year’s winners were the Incorporated Village of Bayville Water Department for Nassau County and the Greenlawn Water District for Suffolk County. For emerging triumphant with the best tasting drinking water, these water providers hold onto the coveted trophy for a year and win bragging rights among their fellow providers.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and Catholic Health are partnering to offer residents and nonresidents a Free Pool Safety Seminar on Friday, July 7, 2023 at SyossetWoodbury Park. Families are encouraged to attend as children under the age of 15 make up more than 78 percent of pool submersion injuries in the United States annually, with 67 percent of them including children

under the age of three. Pre-registration is not required for this event.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and to improve pool safety we offer this seminar to with the goal of saving lives through public education and awareness. We want you to have lots of fun in the sun while always be prepared to respond to emergencies.”
