Food insecurity is a tragedy for everyone it touches, and it also corrodes the stability and value of communal life for those who think it does not affect them. Six individual Future Stars Summer Camps and the SYS Facility in Southampton are supporting their communities by collecting cans of food on location for Operation End Hunger. At the conclusion of the food drive, Hall-Lane Moving & Storage and Gold Service Movers will transport all collected food from these six locations to local food banks. In celebration of their charitable contributions, the six participating

Future Stars Summer Camps will conclude Operation End Hunger by coming together for a fun day of games, prizes, and barbecue on the grounds of the SYS Facility in Southampton. This July, Future Stars Summer Camps is partnering with Move for Hunger, Southampton Youth Services, and Hampton One Real Estate Group to hold the month-long Operation End Hunger food drive In Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In the spirit of friendly competition, the total weight of food collected at each Future Stars facility will be tracked on FSCamps.com, SysInc.org, HamptoneOne.com, and MoveForHunger.org. Each facility welcomes athletes and neighbors alike to “take 2 Minutes to bring in 2 Cans” for deposit in boxes labeled “Move For Hunger” on location. Hunger is an invisible plague in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In Westchester, 34,500 children go to bed hungry every night. In Nassau, that number is 42,630,

From July 7th through July 14th, twenty-eight aspiring performers will gather in the village of Oyster Bay to take part in the second season of Oyster Bay Music Festival, an eight-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival. Ranging in age from 10 to 22 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highlevel classically-trained musicians will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music, taking seminars on audition preparation, performance psychology, body awareness, and performance presentation. Unlike other programs for young musicians, however, Oyster Bay Music Festival’s students spend part of each day performing for live audiences. The festival hosts thirteen

Marching With Plainedge Pride

Parents, siblings, extended family, friends and peers gathered at Hofstra University on June 20th to honor the Class of 2013 during Plainedge High School’s commencement ceremony. The ceremony was laced with special performances featuring members of the graduating class, including the singing of a Hallelujah/ Unwritten arrangement by the jazz choir and Blue Ridge Saga performed by the concert band. Prior to the presentation of the diplomas, the valedictorian, salutatorian,

superintendent, Board of Education president and principal were each given an opportunity to address the graduates and leave them with words of reflection, encouragement and best wishes. Salutatorian John Coacci spoke of how all mistakes lead to achievement. “Don’t let the past hold you back,” he advised. “Take time to reflect, understand and improve yourself.” Valedictorian Terrence McSweeney took a slightly different approach to the same message. “Always work to achieve your goals

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

The Farmingdale School District is proud to announce that Nakul Gupta has been named Valedictorian of Farmingdale High School’s Class of 2013. Nakul earned a cumulative 105.074 Grade Point Average (GPA), the highest of all his classmates. “Nakul is extremely self-motivated,” said Farmingdale High

School Principal Glen Zakian. “His success is the result of hard work, determination and his ability to work effectively with others.” Nakul enrolled in several Advanced Placement courses in a variety of subjects, but specifically focused on math and science. In 2012, he conducted extensive research at Stony Brook University and was named as a Simons Fellow Scholar. The Simons Fellowship Program enables students to work with university faculty mentors to learn more about laboratory tools and techniques. Nakul also reached the national semi-finalist standing in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search Competition, where thousands of high

school seniors across the country conducted original research projects and presented their work to the country’s most prestigious and well-known science and technology industry experts. In addition to achieving a high level of academic success, Nakul participated in various clubs and organizations at Farmingdale High School. He was a member of the Science Bowl team for four years and was also named captain of both the Boys’ Varsity Tennis and Mathletes teams. He also participated in the Chamber Orchestra and was Co-President of the Service Club. Nakul plans to continue his educational career at Harvard University in the fall.

Volunteers Needed Individuals who haven’t surfed in years due to spinal cord injuries, that left them paralyzed, will be able to get on to surfboards at Long Beach thanks to an organization called Wheels2Water. Dozens of volunteers are needed to help paralyzed surfers out of their wheelchairs and on to specially designed surfboards. The Wheels2Water event takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 19th at Lido Beach West on Lido Blvd. in Long Beach. Interested volunteers should contact Anthony Testaverde at 516.729.1061. “Life’s not over after a spinal cord injury,” says Joe Testaverde, who lost the use of his legs and has limited use of his hands after a backyard diving accident and in whose honor the Testaverde Fund was established. “With the

help of volunteers, these paralyzed athletes will get out of their wheelchairs and prepare for the most exhilarating ride of their lives. It’s about getting out and riding a wave. It’s about enjoying life and not letting a disability cripple you.” Wheels2Water, a project of the not-forprofit Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, provides specially equipped surfboards with handles and leg bumpers. Two wheelchairs with dune buggy tires transport the athletes from the boardwalk across the sand to the sea and each participant wears a special life vest with attached scuba tanks for safety. The goal of Wheels2Water is to help provide physically disabled individuals with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational

Joseph Toole, a Manhasset, New York resident and Hofstra University student, was selected as the 2013 Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship recipient. The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its Communications Committee bestow the award annually. Toole, who is also a certified EMT, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in health sciences/ health administration at Hofstra University. The $2,000 award was presented to Toole at the group’s annual scholarship luncheon held this year on June 12th, at the Bonwit Inn in Commack, New York. Toole was chosen for the award based on his outstanding academic achievement and his hands-on experience in the health care field. As a critical care certified

EMT, Toole understands the complexities of health care from both a clinical and administrative viewpoint. He said, “. . . to be effective in the medical field one must have a working knowledge of all of the concerns that come together to provide health care to the public . . . my goal is to become a member of the integrated health care system of the future.” The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship has been awarded each year since 1994 and commemorates the memory of the late vice president for government and public affairs at the Hospital Council. Brown served in this role from 1983 – 1993. The $2,000 award and optional internship is offered to a college junior, senior, or post-graduate student who is a resident of Long

The 35th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament will be presented. This tournament consists of a 6-player division and a 4-player division. All 6-player division games will take place on Saturday, July 13th, and all 4-player division games will take place on Sunday, July 14th. There is no rain date for this event. Registration is free and will continue through Thursday, July 12th, or until the roster is full. Players may only reigster for one team in either the 6-player division or 4-player division. Double registration will result in elimination of the second team. Registration will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, at the Long Island State Park Headquarters, located in Babylon, Exit 37N off of the Southern State Parkway. After being rained out on June 3rd, The Association for Facilities Engineering AFE Chapter 4 Long Island will host their Annual Charity Golf Outing on Thursday, July 11th at the Lido Golf Course in Lido Beach with an 8:30 a.m. “shotgun” start. The AFE Chapter 4 chose Lido to show that LI has come back after Super Storm Sandy, especially in the Long Beach area, where a charitable donation will be made, all while enjoying a great day of golf, food and fun, at one of Long Island’s top golf venues. The honoreee for this year’s outing is Mr. Joe Gathard, a noted business & community leader. Joe Gathard is vice president of All Service Electric, lnc. a leading electrical contracting firm on Long lsland serving businesses, schools and municipalities. A graduate Cadet Captain from La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Joe was born in Valley Stream, NY where his grandparents were founders of the lnc. Village of Valley Stream in 1925. His love for community service and politics kept

Joe busy as a Valley Stream volunteer fireman. His experiences with Rescue Company lead him to a post with Nassau County Police as a MedicalTechnician working on both ambulances and rescue helicopters. He was elected and served two terms as a Village Trustee in Valley Stream and worked for the House of Representatives under Congressman Ray McGrath. Joe’s dad founded the family electrical business after World War ll where just about the whole family spent some time working. Then Joe’s oldest brother and he took the company to the next level acquiring other electrical businesses. Today the family business still thrives with him and his partner Donna earning All Service Electric a reputation offering service second to none. While his son Justin attended NY Maritime College, Joe again became involved and served as President of the Parents Association and Ex-Officio of the Fort Schuyler Alumni Association and Foundation. During that time as a

Volunteer Today Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-aweek suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is calling for volunteers to learn and implement crisis intervention through texting! While texting is often looked at as a recreational way to communicate, the Crisis Center recognizes its importance in facilitating in-themoment support and help to those in need and in critical situations. If you are skilled in texting, then your skills are important and wanted! The first step is to become a Counselor Assistant. This free orientation training

program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. July’s training will be held on three successive Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10p.m. on July 9th, 16th and 23rd. August’s training will be held on 3 successive Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on August 7th, 14th and 21st. Fire Island Dance Festival, the most anticipated charity event of the season on Fire Island, returns July 19th through 21st, for its 19th edition. With more than $1 million in gifts from those who believe in Father Tom’s dream and another $1 million in matching funds from Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, the Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research at Stony Brook University has a healthy beginning.

“In this first round of funding, the Hartman Center will support two investigators who were previously studying Parkinson’s disease, and welcomes 10 established investigators who are new to the field of Parkinson’s disease research,” said President Stanley. “Their research covers new ground both in basic science and in clinical applications to increase the quality of life for those afflicted with the disease.” The Center’s lead researchers include Leslie “Craig” Evinger, a widely published and highly regarded Stony Brook neuroscientist who is already revolutionizing the study of Parkinson’s, and Professor Lorna Role, co-director of the Institute for Advanced Neuroscience

and department chair, who examines a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders. The Hartman Center will provide a hub where they, as well as other researchers, scientists, medical experts, students and clinicians can think, experiment, and most importantly, collaborate as they work to translate discoveries in basic science into practical solutions for Parkinson’s patients. Current research is already showing promising new developments. President Stanley, a physician, noted that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is the death of a specific group of neurons in the brain. An explanation for why these neurons die is that there is too much calcium coming into the neurons through a special opening in their membrane. Drs. Lonnie Wollmuth and Mark Bowen propose to identify a molecular signature for this opening to enable them to block the calcium inflow to rescue the dying neurons. Additionally, Drs. HoiChung Leung and Christine DeLorenzo propose to use new human brain imaging techniques to characterize changes in brain structure that affect planning and reasoning in Parkinson’s patients. “With reductions in government spending, private philanthropy is becoming even more important to advance critical research,” said Dexter Bailey, Vice President for University Advancement. “Thanks to the innovative research ongoing at Stony Brook University and the leadership of the Hartman Foundation, the Center now has a permanent home and the fight against Parkinson’s disease will continue.” “Father Tom never said ‘no’ to anyone,” said Ernie Canadeo. “Now no one is saying ‘no’ to him, to his legacy. Prior to coaching the girls at Commack, Haller was the Boys Basketball Coach at Valley Stream North in Nassau County

for 11 years. Haller, who played football and basketball at Valley Stream also coached JV Baseball and Varsity Football. Coach Haller is an attorney and a tenured professor at Dowling College. The Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research in the Stony Brook University Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was dedicated during a ceremony in the Center on June 13th, and named in honor of Monsignor Thomas Hartman, beloved priest, Emmy Award-winning television and radio personality, and champion for countless good causes. “Father Tom,” as he is often referred, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004. True to his character, say his friends, he thought of his diagnosis as a gift and immediately established a foundation to raise funds to support Parkinson’s disease research. From 2004 to 2012, the Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, whose board of directors included Stony Brook alumnus Ernie Canadeo, raised about $1 million each year, awarding grants to a variety of researchers, institutions and initiatives. As Father Tom’s health began to deteriorate, it became clear the Foundation would not be sustainable. Having reconnected with his alma mater and realizing the powerful research university Stony Brook had become – and its particular expertise in the neurosciences – Canadeo suggested establishing the Thomas Hartman Center at Stony Brook, an idea wholeheartedly supported by Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and others at the University. “The idea came with a challenge,” said Canadeo. “We needed to raise $1 million to establish the Center at Stony Brook. If we did so, the gift would be doubled through a matching gift from Jim and Marilyn Simons.” With an inner circle of Father Tom’s friends stepping forward to make philanthropic gifts at a kickoff dinner held in April 2012, the fundraising received a tremendous head start: $500,000. The Wheels2Water event takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 19th at Lido Beach West on Lido Blvd. in Long Beach. The Rifton adaptive tricycle, valued at over $1,500, was presented to 7 year-old Katie Soehl, who was diagnosed with Rhett’s syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects girls almost exclusively, as a surprise gift for her upcoming birthday. “All adaptive equipment provides unlimited physical, cognitive and emotional benefits; but combining those benefits

It’s about getting out and riding a wave. It’s about enjoying life and not letting a disability cripple you.” Wheels2Water, a project of the not-forprofit Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, provides specially

equipped surfboards with handles and leg bumpers. Two wheelchairs with dune buggy tires transport the athletes from the boardwalk across the sand to the sea and each participant wears a special life vest with attached scuba tanks for safety. Are We Ready?

This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of

their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every

other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.
