Recently, the Farmingdale High School Science National Honor Society (SNHS), along with Mr. Boyd, Mrs. Whiatker, and Mr. Bilello, built, painted, and hung Bat Boxes while learning about the development and nature of the nocturnal animals.

“We Love Bats!” said Farmingdale High School senior Cole Hecker.

Besides being the only mammal that flies, most North American bats are nocturnal insectivores, which means they feed on night-flying insects— especially mosquitoes. A small bat can devour more than 600 mosquitoes in a single hour. They also eat beetles, wasps, and moths. So encouraging bats to nest near your house is a natural way to keep your yard bug-free.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers.

This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand!

Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission.

The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Please contact Annie at 631.774.1556 if you believe you can be of help.

Additionally, volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm

directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need.

Lastly, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is holding a Fall Harvest Festival on October 2nd (rain date October 3rd) from 12PM-5PM. There will be games for kids, bounce houses, face painting, pumpkins, local organic produce, country line dancing, vendors, food trucks and an overall fun time for your entire family! You wont want to miss this event.

They are sill looking for vendors (only $50 for a 10x10 spot) and food trucks to attend this fall event. See the flyer below for more information.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board, along with Nassau County Police Department officials, dedicated a Washington Street park in Farmingdale on Saturday, June 19th in honor of Nassau County District Legislator, Nassau County Police Sergeant and twotime Vietnam War Purple Heart hero Joseph Belesi, who passed away at the age of 73 from Parkinson’s disease.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Joseph Belesi dedicated his entire life

to the service of others, most notably answering the call of service to this great nation, where he was twice wounded in action in Vietnam. He was an exceptional man of character, courage, integrity and compassion.

This park will forever serve as a lasting tribute to his remarkable legacy and as a reminder to all residents of his service and sacrifices on behalf of nation.”

Prior to his service as a County Legislator, Joseph Belesi served as a Nassau County Police Sergeant and Vice President of

the Superior Officers Association. Named a “Daler Hero” by the Village of Farmingdale, he was extremely active in the community - serving many years as a Little League coach, belonging to the Sons of Italy in America, the Knights of Pythias, and Italian Americans in Government Service. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and gave back to the community as a member of the Massapequa- Farmingdale Men’s Club.

Lacrosse Leadership Award For Farmingdale High’s Christian Lembo

The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to one player on each of the four teams that competed in the June 15 finals of the 2021 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships.

The recipient for Farmingdale High School is senior defenseman Christian Lembo. Along with the other award winners, Lembo reflects

the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each recipient also possesses the ability to inspire others on and off the field. At his school, Lembo also is a recipient of the 2021 Triple C Award that recognizes outstanding students’ courage, character and commitment.

The leadership awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse star and local lacrosse

benefactor James C. Metzger, who won many awards during his days at Half Hollow Hills East High School in Dix Hills, played lacrosse for two years at Hofstra University and is a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame and the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. He is the founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, a leading insurance services and estate planning company headquartered in Garden City.

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words.

Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America.

A total of 56 delegates signed the document.

Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures.

Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776.

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment.

Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution.

According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament.

“Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain.
