The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to players who competed in the finals of the 2023 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 30-31, at Hofstra University. Leadership award recipients reflected the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possessed the ability to inspire others on and off the field.

C. Metzger MVP awards were presented to four players participating in the 2023 Long Island Boys Lacrosse Championships at Stony Brook University.

Award Recipients

Senior attack Jake Norton of Farmingdale High School received a Nassau leadership award. In the Class A game, Farmingdale defeated Port Washington 11-3. At the Long Island Championships, goals were at a premium until Farmingdale tallied three times in the fourth quarter to defeat Northport High School 5-3. Senior goalie Michael Ippoliti protected that lead with several

spectacular saves for a total of 14 to capture the game’s MVP Award.

Senior long stick midfielder/attack Peter Thomann of Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick received a leadership award. In the Class B Nassau game, Garden City defeated Thomann’s school 7-6 and went on to win its Long Island Championships match 10-6 against West Islip.

Senior midfielder Danny Fisenne of Wantagh High School was honored with a leadership award. In the Class C Nassau game, Wantagh lost 15-9 to

Manhasset, which then defeated Shoreham-Wading River 11-6 in the Long Island Championships.

Senior face off specialist/ midfielder Bryce Kipnes of Cold Spring Harbor High School was acknowledged with a leadership award. In the Class D Nassau game, Cold Spring Harbor defeated Friends Academy of Locust Valley 14-1. Cold Spring then defeated Mattituck/Southhold 8-2 in the Class D Long Island Championships game. Senior goalie Carsen Kirschner, who also plays basketball and is committed to the University of Scranton,

received the game’s MVP Award while allowing just one goal.

The awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse stars James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto, and more recent high school, college and professional standout lacrosse player James Pannell.

A three-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills, Metzger received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points and received AllAmerican honors. An AllAmerican lacrosse player

at Hofstra University, Metzger is the founder and chairman of Whitmore –The Agency, an insurance and financial services firm in Garden City. Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and was a Hofstra University All-American midfielder. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Pannell is a two-time All-American and career points leader at Smithtown West High School. He was an AllAmerican at the University of Virginia and a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) AllStar.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a life-affirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10 , from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and ﬁrst responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-proﬁt organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacriﬁce so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Giving Bark Thursday:

Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and ﬁrst responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! Farmingdale State College Holds Spring 2023 Commencement Exercises

Farmingdale State College (FSC) held its Spring 2023 Commencement ceremony with more than 1,300 degrees conferred, comprised of 1,130 Bachelors, 11 Masters, and 153 Associates degrees and 16 Advanced Certificate graduates, from the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business; Engineering Technology; and Health Science.

“This is your day!” said Dr. John Nader, President of Farmingdale State College in his commencement address. “FSC exemplifies that original SUNY vision by students who are talented and motivated and simply need the opportunity to succeed. You have done that.”

Nader went on to relay stories of amazing graduates who have accomplished great things inside and outside the classroom, including organizing book, clothing and supply drives and activities to help their Long Island communities and address needs at an intimate human level.

Every student had their own personal story of struggle and triumph.

“When I was born, doctors said I wouldn’t be able to walk or talk and now I’m getting my degree,” said Bernice Jean-Baptiste, a psychology graduate from Suffolk County. “It’s surreal to me.”

Carol Sung of New Hyde Park, an interactive design major and recipient of The Ferro Family Endowed Scholarship at FSC, was named class valedictorian and delivered the valedictorian address.
