The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2014 summer season on Saturday, June 21st, a week earlier than the previously announced June 28th date, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto.

“Pools are enjoyed by people of all ages,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“The revised opening date will let residents get an early jump on the season. Going for a swim is one of the most enjoyable activities of the summertime, and we have spectacular facilities in the Town.”

Tripping Down Memory Lane By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be?

There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage.

Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end.

However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of.

You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories…

And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before

my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance.

After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

Town Beaches To Open Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto is pleased to announce that residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey

at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches every day of the week beginning on Saturday, June 21st.

“If you’re a beach lover, you must be excited that the official start of summer

is here with plenty of time to enjoy the Town beaches,” said Councilman Pinto. “Therefore, I am very happy to announce that beginning June 21, all Town beaches will be open seven days a week. “

Councilman Pinto also said that beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $25.

Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the

Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee.

“The Town of Oyster Bay has spectacular beaches

and I am so glad that the Town’s residents will be able to enjoy those beaches throughout the summer,” added Councilman Pinto.

“It’s amenities like these that make the Town of Oyster Bay a special place to live.”

During the anger management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues.

New classes for a oneday session begin on June 21st, July 26th and August 23rd. Clients can choose between the onetime eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions. Individual anger management sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) offers an eight-hour Anger Management Class for adults seeking to learn skills to manage conflict, stress and anger. The course is offered monthly in LICADD’s Mineola office, and complements the agency’s 12-week Anger Management Program that meets in Ronkonkoma on Monday evenings and Mineola on Tuesday evenings.

The Farmingdale School District honors the outstanding contributions made by Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Garavuso, principal of Northside Elementary School.

Mrs. Garavuso will retire at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. She has held the position as principal for the last 20 years, and has helped to ensure that more than 3,000 students have received the highest quality education possible during that time.

“Liz Garavuso is a

tremendous leader, role model and teacher, and has set the highest standards for her students, staff and friends to follow at the Northside Elementary School,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent of School. “All of us in the Farmingdale School District community will miss Liz in the years to come as we wish her a happy and well-deserved retirement.”

“I am grateful to have spent the majority of

my career at Northside Elementary school and to have worked with such wonderful people, including the talented and hardworking teachers in Farmingdale,” said Mrs. Garavuso. “I am a much better person for having shared this important part of my life with this exceptional community.”

During her tenure, Mrs. Garavuso has played a vital role in assisting her staff teach the District’s curriculum to the students in a

Over the years, she has recommended 67 teachers, 54 teacher aides, 12 custodians, two secretaries and one nurse for hire.

GIRL SCOUT SILVER - Girl Scouts from the Plainedge Association earned their Silver Award on May 27th.

The Town of Oyster Bay Annual Children’s Festival & Safety Day will be held on Saturday, June 28th, at John J. Burns Town Park, located on Merrick Road, in Massapequa, from 1 to 4 p.m., Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone announced.

This popular event will feature many enjoyable activities for children, as well as safety-related demonstrations. The event is free for Town residents and is coordinated by the Town’s Departments of Community and Youth Services and Public Safety.

“This is a great event with fun-filled activities for our Town’s youth including airbrush painting, balloon art, bouncies, entertainment and refreshments,” Councilman Macagnone said. “In addition, the safety demonstrations will provide valuable safety information to both children and parents about

keeping kids safe.”

Safety Day will feature displays from the Nassau County Police Aviation, the Nassau County Mounted Police, the Nassau County Police K-9 Unit, Nassau County Police Special Ops, the Nassau County Police Motorcycle Unit, the Nassau County Police POP Unit, the Nassau County Police Squad, the New York State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard. There will also be displays from local fire departments, as well as a Town of Oyster Bay Truck Display. As part of the Children’s Festival, the DG Quintet will be performing between 1:20 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. and Mad Science of Long Island will present “Fire and Ice” from 3 until 4 p.m.

“DG Quintet, winners of the 2014 Tobay Talent Competition, will be bringing their show to John J. Burns Park,” Councilman Macagnone

said. “The DG Quintet features a melody of catchy tunes the whole family can enjoy.”

Councilman Macagnone also added, “This year, the event will also feature Mad Science of Long Island.

This group of tremendously talented group has received high praise for being a top provider in bringing fun science for kids in Long Island.”

Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976.

Our country was going through a terrible recession.

Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store.

Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention.

He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable.

While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.

In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip.

During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust.

In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague.

They heard she had a lot of things piled high as they could be.

How did she gather all this stuff? It took so many years.

To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears.

For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three.

For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck.

She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck.

She hurries to another pile and opens the next box.

A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks.

Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’

And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

Sobol literally wrote the book on music therapy for disabled youngsters as the author of “An Attitude and Approach for Teaching Music to Special Learners.” She joined the Rosemary Kennedy School staff in 1988 and has changed the lives of numerous students in the ensuing decades. More than one non-verbal student, who has never spoken a word out loud, has broken out in song during his lessons with Sobol.

Students throughout Long Island seek to study with Mangum in LIHSA’s Music Department. When Mangum joined Nassau BOCES five years ago, he brought more than two decades of experience in film production and music composition, including credits with National Geographic, Discovery Channel and PBS. Mangum is able to bring his experience to the classroom every day as he teaches high school students who dream of working in the music industry.

Mangum and Sobol, along with the other finalists, will be evaluated by the Selection Committee in the coming weeks. One finalist will be named later this spring. The finalist will participate in professional development and teacher leadership conversations across New York.
