The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs
America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!
The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.
America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.
Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.
On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house
manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.
Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.
After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.
When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

Community Pools To Open Daily Beginning June 24th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that all Town of Oyster Bay community pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 24th. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.
“The warm, sunny days of summer are nearly upon us and all residents may start visiting our pools daily beginning Saturday, June 24th,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Town Pool memberships offer families and senior citizens access to many great amenities, including upgraded restrooms, pool deck furniture, picnic benches and sunshades.”

Labor Day, Monday, September 4th will be 11am to 7pm daily, weather permitting. Additionally, extended hours until 8pm, will be offered as follows (weather permitting) at the following locations on the following schedule:

Thursday: Marjorie R.

Fridays: ALL pools open late including Tappen
Pool memberships can be obtained at each park location. Memberships are available at community park pools for both park district residents and non-park district residents. Daily admission rates, nanny memberships and group access are also available. In addition to the great new amenities at our facilities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to residents
age five and older. Applications to register for swimming lessons are available on line at oysterbaytown.com/ portal, with four swim lesson sessions available to choose from. The Town will also offer a swim team this summer at outdoor pools located in SyossetWoodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am beginning Wednesday, June 29th. Swim meets will be held Saturday mornings and class meets will be held Tuesday afternoons. Schedules will be distributed the first week of practice.
