Sergei Kochkin, PhD, BHI’s executive director says: “Alzheimer’s disease is a heart-wrenching illness that poses many challenges for the individual, family and caregiver. Early detection, diagnosis, and intervention are critical because they provide the best opportunities for treatment, support, and planning. With the summer months upon us and we are seeing family and friends more frequently, it is important that each of us remain vigilant to the early signs of Alzheimer’s in the people we love.” William Kent is Director of Long Island Hearing, a family owned and operated Audiology and Hearing Instrument Practice since in 1985. They have offices in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and can be reached at 1.800.698.5200 for questions about this article.

Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953!

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

The Farmingdale School District is proud to announce that Minhal Ahmed has been named Farmingdale High School’s Class of 2014 Salutatorian. Minhal earned a 104.858 grade point average during his four-year academic career at Farmingdale High School. “We are extremely proud of Minhal as he strives to learn both in and out of the classroom,” said Jill Greeney, Farmingdale High School Guidance

7

Salutatorian Named Counselor. “Minhal is extremely humble and is respected and admired by his peers. He is very deserving of this honor and we expect to hear great things of him in his future.” Minhal received a score of ‘5’ on all of his Advanced Placement exams, the highest score possible. He also qualified as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist during the 20132014 school year. Outside the classroom, Minhal was an avid participant in the school’s Science Bowl team as well as the Science Olympiad and Mathlete programs. In addition, Minhal volunteers his time to tutor his fellow classmates in math and physics, and volunteers at the Nassau Medical Center and his local library. Minhal will attend Northeastern University in the fall to study bioengineering.

The Farmingdale School District is one out of only 376 school districts across the country to receive the award. “It is truly an honor to receive this award because it represents the continued support of our school administration, our teachers – and most importantly – our community to ensure that music and art education is part of our students’ well-rounded education,” said Rita Zirpolo Padden, Farmingdale School District Fine Arts Director. More than 2,000 school districts across the country applied to receive the distinction. Third grade students enrolled in the Farmingdale School District’s Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently researched various animals and drafted literature-based reports. The students conducted the research in the school’s computer lab and library as part of an animal science activity. The lesson was designed to enhance the student’s

11

Animal Science use of technology while learning about various species and life cycles. The students researched the animals’ appearances, diets, habitats, specific life cycles, and how the animals defend themselves. This experience also prepared the third grade students for a class field trip to the Bronx Zoo to study the animals up close.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH NY program, in cooperation with the Nassau County Boy Scouts Theodore Roosevelt Council, will offer a free Freshwater Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 14th. The clinic will be held at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Clinics of this type have received overwhelming responses in the past, demonstrating the intense interest in freshwater fishing on Long Island,” Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “In these hectic times, fishing is a wonderful family activity that can develop into a hobby that provides a lifetime of fun, relaxation, and opportunity to slow down and rediscover the natural world that sustains us. We encourage people to participate in this exciting event.” Free loaner fishing rods and bait, supplied by I FISH NY, will be available for use at the clinic. The event will begin with basic fishing instruction. Space is limited; please call I FISH NY at 631.444.0283 to preregister. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be

used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

Math Olympiad For the first time, each of the elementary schools in the Plainedge School District participated in the Math Olympiad, held in Old Westbury in May. Each building assembled a team, which practiced

throughout the year. The top five students from each team represented the schools at the competition, which was for elementary and middle school students. The Math Olympiad program

stimulates enthusiasm and a love for mathematics, teaches major strategies for problem solving and strengthens mathematical intuition.

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, today announced that it collected 326,365 pounds of food as part of the Stamp Out Hunger campaign held on Saturday, May 10th. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service and food banks across the country. Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than 300,000 Long Islanders — including 110,000

children — who face the risk of going hungry every day. This year’s collection of 326,365 pounds of food from across Long Island is equal to 271,970 meals for those struggling with hunger. “Island Harvest is pleased to see so many of our neighbors here on Long Island who stepped up and generously donated 326,365 pounds of food for those who often don’t have enough food to maintain a healthy life,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “We are especially grateful to the NALC and the U.S. Postal Service

for their efforts in helping Stamp Out Hunger in our local communities.” In addition to the generous donations, a total of 440 Long Islanders volunteered from various businesses and communities to help Island Harvest sort and pack food collected from the campaign.
