Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series is once again limited to residents only on a first-come, firstserved basis.

“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer at the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We’re thrilled to once again enjoy family-friendly films from the comfort of your own vehicles at our local parks and beaches.

Join us as these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”

The Charity of the Month for June is

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades!

The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day.

Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island.

When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm.

Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown.

Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand.

Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned!

On June 13th and September 12th, they will

be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself.

For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th!

You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission.

Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed!

Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given.

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need.

We’re looking forward to seeing all of our members get back-to-business, especially the hardest hit restaurant industry, and thriving as they were pre-Covid.

We’re also celebrating the formation of Main Street’s Business Improvement District (BID) which encompasses the portion of Main Street from Prospect Street to N Front Street, just past the railroad tracks.

There hasn’t been a new business improvement district in Nassau County in over 20 years.

district (BID) is a commercial district that assembles funds to be used to collectively enhance the area. This new BID allows the merchants to better plan and pay for maintenance and enhancements to the Farmingdale Downtown.

Some examples of what they could use the funds for would be for snow removal, advertising, special events, security cameras, a directory kiosk, etc. The BID can also apply for grant money from federal, state, and local municipalities to promote downtown business.

Farmingdale’s BID’s board of directors is comprised of Village business owners: Nick DeVito (President), Tony Kathreptis (Vice President), Walter Priestley (Secretary), Joe Fortuna (Treasurer), Maria Josephine Winant, Chris Werle, Christina Bisbee, Bill Carman, and Joe Garcia.

To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Town Councilman Tom Hand invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, June 21st from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Johnson

stated, “Residents can save lives by donating blood this June at the Hicksville Athletic Center.

Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives.

Please consider participating in this blood drive on June

21st.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive.

Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s

note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive.

Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy

Queen, compliments of Councilwoman Laura Maier.

Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives.

This past year has been incredibly difficult for all of us, especially for our health care system, and it is up to all of us to help pitch in to make sure
