VEX ROBOTICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - In early May, Farmingdale High School Robotics traveled to Dallas, Texas, to attend the VEX Robotics World Championship. Only the top 800 out of 20,000 teams worldwide earn a spot in this prestigious competition. Farmingdale made it to the elimination round, reserved for the top 320 teams, finishing with a 4-7 record. After last year’s inaugural tour of Romeo & Juliet, EastLine Theatre returns to those same sunny Italian streets for The Two Gentlemen of Verona. This rollicking take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy will feature original live music and tour to a dozen scenic locations across Long Island. All performances will be free, fun, and family friendly.

“We started our outdoor Shakespeare program in 2021 as a response to the pandemic, in an effort to produce safe and accessible takes on classic theatrical literature” says Nicole Savin, co-artistic director of EastLine Theatre. “After an overwhelming response to last year’s production, we are thrilled to return to outdoor theatre and bring Shakespeare back to some of Long Island’s most beautiful locations.”

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care.

Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County.

Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home.

In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child.

Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn who came to Wading River, Long Island, looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. Since then, Little Flower has grown and adapted to address the unmet needs of thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

GIRL SCOUT CADETTE TROOP 3076 - Girl Scout Cadette Troop 3076 visited Village Hall recently to learn about local government as one of the requirements to earn their Democracy badge. I met with the Girl Scouts, Abby Malanga, Serena Lepik, and Amanda Piccolo of Troop 3076 so they could learn about our elected representatives and the functions that take place at Village Hall. A Q&A session followed where the Girl Scouts asked questions about my leadership style, who inspires me, and other aspects of the Mayoral position. The end result is a sustainable effort that can continue long after project completion, which makes a difference not only locally in our community but can help globally as well”. An Eagle Scout Recognition and Hall of Fame Dinner was held at The Carltun at Eisenhower Park on June 1st. The Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council, in partnership with the Arthur R. Eldred Chapter of the National Eagle Scouts Association planned this event. The event honored “National Outstanding Eagle Scout Awardees”, and “Nassau County Eagle Scout Hall of Fame Inductees”, as

Town To Host Collection Drive On World Blood Donor Day In recognition of World Blood Donor Day and in an effort to help hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 14th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives.

Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people

as possible can be helped.

Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive.

The qualifying procedure will be held on Sunday June 12th promptly at 7:30AM at Suffolk Community College, Grant Campus, Brentwood, NY. The final event of the new hire procedure will take place at the West Bathhouse Ocean front at Jones Beach. Lifeguard candidates must provide their own transportation from Suffolk Community College to Jones Beach.

On-site registration opens at 7am & the test will start at 7:30am. The exam consists of 100-yard timed swim, 50 yard cross chest carry, ¾ mile run and 350-400-yard timed ocean swim. You must bring sneakers! All components are timed and scored based

The winners are Elena Horvat (1st place), Emily Cohen (2nd place), and Isabella Giordano (3rd place). Molly Keena (11th grade) also won 1st place in the singing contest! We are incredibly proud of all students who participated in the two contests, not just the winners. They gave up free periods and after-school hours to meet with their teachers to practice and record their poems/songs. They worked very hard, and all did a fantastic job! The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) is hiring new lifeguards for the summer season with no prior certification required.

There are positions available at Montauk/ Hither Hills, Wildwood, Orient, Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Heckscher & Sunken Meadow State Parks.

New York State Park lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying procedure, before being hired.

Candidates must be 17 years of age to take the exam and valid photo ID is required at check in.

Applicants must have 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes. Contact lenses or glasses are not permitted. VALID CPR/ AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid certification is preferred

During the Monday, May 23 meeting of the full Nassau County Legislature at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage, legislators voted unanimously to allocate $250,000 of American Rescue Plan Act to establish a new paid scholarship program for local college students.

Under the County program, interns will be employed by the Office of the County Executive and will be assigned to a department within

the Nassau County government. The goal is to provide students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn directly from highranking Nassau County government leaders.

The program will be open to college students who are residents of Nassau County and/or students who are enrolled in colleges or universities located in Nassau County.

FSD Superintendent Of Schools Speaker At Women’s Club Of Farmingdale Meeting The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) was privileged to have Farmingdale School District Superintendent Paul Defindini speak at their May meeting. Mr. Defindini relayed “that the past 2 years have been agonizing for staff and students alike” as they attempted to navigate the ever-changing regulations of the Covid pandemic. He compared it “to trying to rebuild an airplane while its flying.” As has been prevalent throughout the country, the school has had its share of staff/student mental health issues which has resulted in the hiring of additional social workers and psychologists. These expenditures, in turn, have been incorporated into the 2022/23 proposed school budget while keeping the proposed tax levy increase at a low 1.59%.

But through it all, Defindini had nothing but high praise for all the school staff, which includes administrators, teachers and numerous support staff. Defindini stated that the good news is that “during the last two to three weeks,” the vibe in the schools “has started to feel different. There is a heartbeat present which has not been felt since the beginning of the pandemic.”

Mr. Defindini also spoke on the several planned capital renovations and plans to bring the district completely off the energy grid in the next 3-4 years.

include playground and parking lot restorations for which income held in a reserve account will be extracted.

Forthcoming capital projects include solar car ports, saving 60% of the school district’s utility bill, while they provide protection from the elements and will have the capacity to charge electric vehicles. Installing LED lighting throughout the district will not only be cost effective but will reduce time-consuming maintenance.

At the Aquatic Center, there will be two pools, one for the community and one for student competition. This is expected to be completed and open for use in June.

Defindini said that “more information on the Aquatic Center will be available to the community soon.”

Looking ahead, Defindini expects the school district to be entirely off the energy grid with the use of solar panels throughout the district.

Linda Kreussling, GFWC-NYS President, WCF President Tina Diamond, 2nd VP Vicky Impollonia, GFWC-NYS Board Members Barbara Hoerner and Dolores Cianciabella represented the WCF with attendance at the NYS Convention in Albany. These conventions hold many very informative workshops and lectures, in addition to awarding certificates to various NYS clubs for their outstanding projects over the last two years.

The WCF is very proud to have received 1st Place awards for: •Legislation and Public Policy: writing a resolution on amending the NYS Bail Reform Law 2020 •Communications & Public Relations: monthly articles and photos electronically submitted to numerous publications and WCF website, Facebook, handbook & newsletter •GFWC Signature

Project: Domestic Violence Prevention: Donations to Dress for Success – donating new & gently used clothes for job interviews •Leadership Advancement: member presented program on the Who, What, Where, When and Why of GFWC reporting •Education & Library: donating $4,045 to honor six FHS seniors with awards for excellence at graduation •Membership Advancement: hosting gatherings to collect holiday gift bags for homeless children at Madonna Heights and including associate members and friends helping to forge old and new friendships. reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York.

2022 Long Island Hospitality Ball Continuing The Fight Against Cancer With The “Who’s Who” In Hospitality Join the LIHB in the fight against Breast Cancer for the 10th Anniversary Addition 2022 Long Island Hospitality Ball. For the 6th year we are benefitting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY on Monday, June 27, 2022.

In the spirit of generosity, three industry peers will be honored in 2022 for their achievements. Mr. Hart is a hospitality industry guru and cancer survivor.

Johnson Announces The Return Of Youth Tennis Programs Also Hiring Summer Tennis Assistants

Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced the return of Youth Tennis Programs for Summer 2022 and that the Town is now hiring Summer Tennis Assistants. Held at SyossetWoodbury Community Park and Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale beginning on Tuesday, July 5th, the program will feature 6-week sessions for boys and girls ages 5-8.

“Our youth tennis clinic has quickly become a very popular recreational and instructional program.

This program is a great opportunity for children with no prior tennis experience to learn the fundamentals of tennis directly from some of the area’s finest coaches,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “I encourage those interested to register, and take advantage of this opportunity to expose your

children to a new sport, and potentially discover a new passion!”

The Summer 2022 Youth Tennis Program is designed to teach kids the fundamentals of tennis in a structured setting, as well as help improve individual skills. No prior experience is necessary, but participants must bring their own rackets (all other equipment will be provided).

Registration for all sessions in this program will begin on Wednesday, June 15 from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Ellsworth W. Allen Park located at 45 Motor Avenue, Farmingdale. After this date, registration will be walk in only at Town Hall South in Massapequa.

5 & 6 year olds can choose between Session 1, which meets from 4 PM - 4:50 PM, and Session 2, which meets from 5 PM - 5:50 PM. 7 & 8

year olds can choose between Session 1, which meets from 6 PM - 6:50 PM, and Session 2, which meets from 7 PM - 7:50 PM. On Mondays & Wednesdays, clinics will take place at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, and on Tuesdays & Thursdays, they’ll take place at Allen Park. Clinics run for 6 weeks beginning on Tuesday, July 5th. Registration costs $60 for residents and $75 for non-residents.

Tennis Assistants must be 16+, have at least 1- 2 years of experience participating on a Tennis team, and be available for the duration of the program, which runs from July 5th until August 11th, Monday – Thursday, between the hours of 3:45 PM - 8 PM. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding the level of threat a

notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences.

The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

The statistics are in… recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. And a standout economic success story in recycling is HELPSY! The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue.

A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper, plastics, rubber, electronics, organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials.

Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons of textiles every year…amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons.

“HELPSY’s environmental mission

is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous environmental burden of the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, CoFounder and CEO of HELPSY. Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with 113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations. Through a combination of clothing drives, home pick-ups, thrift store partners and clothing receptacles located in 10 states, HELPSY diverts nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from landfills every year.
