Hundreds Celebrate Launch Of The Historic Ida May Oyster Vessel

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca, and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato joined the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation, The Waterfront Center, and hundreds of neighbors to officially launch a replica of the historic Ida May oyster vessel into North Shore Waters. This launch is the culmination of a decades-long effort to build a full-scale replica of the Ida May, one of the first ever engine-powered oyster dredges to serve our local waters.
“We gather in celebration to launch the newly constructed Ida May oyster vessel for the first time,” Supervisor Saladino said. “After her retirement in 2003, the Oyster Bay community came together to ensure the legacy of the Ida May would live on for generations to come. The Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation created a vision to preserve her history: completely rebuilding the Ida May and using the replica as a “floating classroom” to teach residents about
Oyster Bay. That vision becomes reality today.”
Originally built in 1925, the Ida May was one of the first ever enginepowered oyster dredges of her time. She served the local waters of the North Shore for over 75 years, but was too damaged to be restored.
“Together, we thank the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation – led by President George Lindsay – for leading the effort to keep the legacy
of the Ida May alive. This 44-ton replica was built almost entirely by volunteers and funded in part by a grant from the legendary Billy Joel. Now, the Waterfront Center will use this beautiful vessel as a teaching tool about our harbor and its history,” Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF)
is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.
Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.
Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:
•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems
•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.
Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

The Canton of Lions End, in the Crown Province of Østgarðr returns to the Village Green in Farmingdale on Saturday June 3rd for the Third Annual Farmingdale Medieval History Day from 10am – 4pm, 361 Main Street. Wearing Medieval clothing of different centuries, they will perform demonstrations and displays of some skills, as well as arts and crafts. “Being of Viking decent myself, I’m intrigued,” said Farmingdale Village Mayor, Ralph Ekstrand!
Medieval History Day coincides
with the annual Farmingdale Fire Department Spring Street Fair along Main Street on Saturday June 3rd. Come enjoy the late spring air and sunshine, shop, dine along Main Street, stop by the Village Green and step back to an earlier time, bring friends and family! Join the Canton of Lions End, the local Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) group in Farmingdale for family-oriented crafts, hands-on demonstrations and exhibits for adults and children. This event is planned in conjunction with the Farmingdale Village Cultural Arts Committee. The event is FREE, intended for all ages, and the rain date is June 10th.
