Fellow artisans joined efforts to create a Peace Garden in the LIHSA courtyard in ART STUDENTS UNITE - The students of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School honor of school shooting for the Arts (LIHSA) work together to plant the LIHSA Peace Garden in honor of the victims everywhere.

Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses.

We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom.

As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled.

Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes.

Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing.

Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest.

I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls).

I don’t often have the

St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that juniors David Amelemah of Amityville, Jeanette Jeavons of Farmingdale, and Erik Williams of Bay Shore have been selected as recognized students in the National Merit Scholarship program.

This means that they have placed in the top 3% of the 1.6 million students who took the PSAT.NMSQT exam in October.

St. John’s will be notified in September as to which of the three will be named semi-finalists in the program.

Our dear childhood friend Joan Greenspan (Seaford Class of ‘79) needs our help! Her MS has progressed to the point that she can no longer get around by herself and she has no one to depend on for help. Except for the rare visit from someone strong enough to help lift her in and out of their car, along with her wheelchair, Joan is trapped in her apartment, with one day running into the next and no hope for things to change. Joan can no longer use her legs for driving, but a handicapped van, equipped with a lift and hand controls, would literally give Joan her life back!

We, her lifelong Seaford friends from near and far, thought we’d put together a beautiful day filled with lots of music, delicious food, raffles and of course, love, laughter and friendship!

All the proceeds will go to help Joan regain her freedom.

A really fun time, a chance to see old friends, a chance to see old friends, a chance to make new friends and share some hugs!

Wind ‘N Willow is a one-of-a-kind NYS licensed pre-school located in North Massapequa. Since gaining ownership, Linda has done major renovations to this staple community pre-school learning center. She completely remodeled the playground and classrooms, as well as rewrote the curriculum.

Over the last 18 months, Wind ‘N Willow has accumulated a waiting list of over 100 children that were unable to be placed in the school. As a result, Linda made the decision to expand the pre-school and add two additional classrooms, as well as a kitchen area so that she can offer a lunch program going forward. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

specifically designed for military members.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Farmingdale High School senior Michael Dortz has built a muchneeded food pantry at Howitt Middle School.

With money raised from hosting a carwash, he took an existing walk-in storage closet - redesigned it - and installed shelving to turn it into a functional food pantry.

The space is a wonderful complement to the district-wide program, Hunger Doesn’t Vacation.

Beginning on May 26th, pre-registration will take place daily and will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pre-registration will take place from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at all facilities.

Plainedge School District congratulates Plainedge High School students Nicole Jacobsen, Cassidy Alvarez, Kerri Farrell, Mina Sarmas and Grace Read for winning the 2018 NYU Innovation Entrepreneurship Award.

These students

devoted weeks developing a remote-controlled surveillance robot. They collaborated with industry professionals to learn Arduino and Raspberry PI programming and their presentation won the team two summer internships at the NYU engineering

lab and access to the NYU startup incubator in lower Manhattan. Their hard work accomplished a first for Plainedge High School and sets the foundation for a fruitful partnership between PHS and NYU.

CPR Awareness Week National CPR and AED Awareness Week – June 1st through 7th, 2018 – aims to raise awareness and increase the number of people who perform CPR in cardiac arrest emergencies. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.

About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. That’s why this year, the American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is highlighting the importance of bystander CPR.

When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater survival rates after a cardiac arrest.

“Every second counts in cardiac arrest. Bystanders are absolutely critical in a cardiac arrest emergency.

They start the American Heart Association’s out-ofhospital chain of survival by calling 9-1-1 and then providing early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions, and finding

the closest AED” said [Dr. Russell Schiff, Director of Ambulatory Pediatric Cardiology at Northwell Health and Vice President of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors “What if it were your mom or dad, your husband or wife, your sister or brother, your friend or someone standing next to you who was having a cardiac arrest? You would want to know what to do.

So, if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, you won’t be afraid, your actions can help.”

Only about 46 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive the immediate help that they

need before professional help arrives.

Many Americans don’t perform CPR because they don’t know what to do or they are afraid of hurting the person. To help increase the likelihood of people performing CPR in an emergency, the Association recommends Hands-Only CPR, which has two easy steps. Step 1: Call 911. Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives.

The American Heart Association is marking this week here on Long Island by encouraging people to get trained in CPR to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans perform CPR and know

how to use an AED. In 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked collaboratively to federally designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week, which happens the first seven days of June each year.

In 2009, the American Heart Association launched a nationwide Hands-Only CPR campaign to raise awareness about this lifesaving skill. The campaign is supported nationally by an educational grant from the Anthem Foundation.

Since 2012, nearly 10.1 million people have been trained in Hands-Only CPR

via events, training kiosks and video education with the Anthem Foundation’s support.

Starting in 2017, the American Heart Association partnered with leading organizations in the field of cardiac arrest to form the National Cardiac Arrest Collaborative, with the goal of promoting how to help in a cardiac arrest emergency.

Teeing Off Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer.

The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600

volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York Metro area.

More than 230 guests attended the official campaign launch for 2018 on Thursday, May 17th at the Glen Oaks Club, 175 Post Avenue, Old Westbury.

Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education,

prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery.

Awards in many categories support growth, innovative fundraising and dollars raised. This past year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign.

Highlight of the day was the presentation of

the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts at Fresh Meadow Country Club.

tournaments are organized and run by volunteer committees guided by an event Chairperson.

Events are primarily golf tournaments, but tennis, bridge, Mah Jongg and bridge are all played to raise funds. Club events and income outcomes vary widely, ranging from $1,500 to over $200,000 per club, for a total of over 1.3 million in 2017.

The Society provides a tournament guide with instructions and fundraising tips, gifts for

all participants, course signage, prizes, club-wide contests plus any support the volunteer Chairs require.
