Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination.

Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions.

Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difficult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company.

If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications.

While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work.

Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation.

To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2021-2022 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.

Late payers should immediately contact the Tax Receiver Pravato’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did

not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises homeowners who fall under those

circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.

Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in New York State are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites residents to take part in Summer Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, and volleyball, beginning on July 10th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs run for 10 weeks, are co-ed, and open to individuals 18 and over.

“The Town’s athletic programs offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the court, improve their skills, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Playing basketball, badminton, and volleyball are the ideal way to have fun while staying active, and I encourage residents to take advantage of these Town programs.”

Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on July 10, 2022. The Basketball program is 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Options For Community Living’s 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala And Casino Night Honored Dale Cole And Brian Rooney Options for Community Living, Inc. recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Gala and Casino Night at the Heritage Club in Bethpage. The event acknowledged honorees Dale Cole, Newsday/ Newsday Charities, and Brian Rooney, Mutual of America as well as the retirement of founding board member, Michael McClain.

Two-hundred people attended the event, which raised over $75,000 for Options’ programs which help vulnerable Long Islanders live independently in the community.

Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO at Options for Community Living, Inc. introduced the evening by acknowledging the challenges of the last two years and recognizing Options employees for their commitment to the mission. “It has been my privilege, particularly these last two years, to lead and be part of the most caring, compassionate, and strong group of individuals that we call Team Options.

Over 200 strong, our team worked tirelessly to ensure the safety, dignity, and care of more than 2,400 men, women, and children across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” remarked Ms. Robano-Gross.

Options recognized honoree, Dale Cole, Community Affairs Project Manager for Newsday, and the driving force behind Newsday Charities which provides vital support to local nonprofits.

“Dale has impacted countless lives through her work,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross. “Options has been the grateful recipient of support provided through Newsday Charities for many years, and we are thankful for Newsday’s efforts to activate Long Islanders in support of our communities most vulnerable residents.”

In his acceptance speech, Brian Rooney credited his parents with “teaching him the right thing to do,” and acknowledged the staff at Options for Community Living, for their compassion and kindness. Addressing the audience Brian said, “This is why I am so proud to support Options and the amazing work accomplished by their employees.”

The Gala also celebrated retiring founding board member Michael McClain who encouraged everyone to “remain vigilant” as advocates for those in need of assistance, and a moving testimonial was provided by Options’ employee Michele M. Michele is a resident in Options’ supportive housing and works as a peer specialist helping support others in their recovery from mental illness.

Michael McClain with Judy Simoncic experience, Michele said, “Options has played a pivotal role in both my personal and professional life. I continue to receive the support I need from Options staff and in turn, I can provide support and encouragement to others facing their own struggles.

Back in 2017, I had no hope, no vision, no sense of selfworth. But with my family, my treatment team, and Options, I have been able to not only survive, but thrive.

And isn’t that what life is all about?”

Welcome Spring! Some updates on Infrastructure projects in Farmingdale Village: We thank Fairfield Properties for their investment in Farmingdale Village. Fairfield Properties is investing approximately $1 million for the upgrade to the Plaza, which will include a fountain, brickwork, trees, shrubs, seating area, an elevated seating area - so people can watch for trains, and other improvements. Work is progressing at Fairfield Plaza, located at Secatogue Avenue and S. Front Street, adjacent to the Historic Farmingdale Village LIRR tracks/station. Plans for the project are also included herein, and also posted on the Village website, www. farmingdalevillage.com.

Burial of the electric wires downtown by National Grid is postponed until the fall due to spring/ summer events. Work on the new 500,000-Water Tower on Eastern Parkway is underway and completion is expected later this year.

Additionally, upgrades are underway at the DPW garage, located at Ketchum Lane and Ridge Road, and construction of the new DPW garage starts in June.

Just a reminder that 12hour employee parking permits for Village parking expire May 31, 2022. To renew permits, visit Village Hall, along bring proof of employment, vehicle registration, driver’s license and a check for $50 payable to Inc. Village of Farmingdale. Visit the permit department for parking permit renewals, the second door in the hallway on the left at Village Hall, they can also provide the form required for the permit renewal.

Summer Swim Lessons Registration Available Online Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s summer swim lessons will take place online beginning Tuesday, May 31st at 9:00 am on the Town’s website at www.oysterbaytown. com/parks.

Swim lessons are available at all Town pools (Syosset-Woodbury Park, PlainviewOld Bethpage Park, Bethpage Community Park and Marjorie Post Park) for children ages 5 and older.

“Because we live in a Town sandwiched between the Long

Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it is extremely important that children in the Town of Oyster Bay learn how to swim,” said Councilman Hand. “Our swim lessons have been a hugely popular program for many years as children learn how to safely enjoy fun in the pool under the guidance of our American Red Cross certified lifeguards.”

There are four two-week sessions throughout the summer. Classes are run on weekdays at 11:15 am and 12:15 pm for 45 minutes each. The registration

fee is $55 per child for the first two-week session with a season pass. If the same child signs up for additional two-week sessions, the fee will be $30 per subsequent two-week session. For those without a season pass the registration fee is $75 per child for the first two-week session and $50 per subsequent two-week session. Lessons are on a first-come, firstserved basis and no walk-ins are allowed.

Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water.

The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety.

Bobby Hazen, District Manager of SafT-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present.

Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more

distractions.”

As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons.

It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions.

Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn life-saving skills yearround. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water.

P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision.

L = Life Jackets. Life

jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard.

A = Adult Always Watching.

Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath.

Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute.

S = Shut All Gates.

Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices.

H = How to Rescue.

Teach all caregivers infant, child/adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques.

Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.
