Helen Martin & Trade Winds Scholarships For Achievement 2023

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

-School Transcript; documentation of GED Completion (if applicable)

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

Town Announces Co-Ed Fitness Classes For Summer 2023

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fitness Classes, which return for the summer beginning July 5th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Fitness classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Cardio Kick-Boxing, Pilates, Ballroom Dancing, Yoga, and Zumba are all very popular programs that provide our residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people. I encourage those looking for a terrific form of aerobic exercise that will help build strength and flexibility to come out and sign up for a 10-week fitness program.”

This summer, residents

can participate in a variety of fitness classes including:

Ballroom Dancing will be held on Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning July 8th.

Cardio Kick-Boxing will be held on Thursdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning July 6th.

Pilates will be held on Mondays (Tone & Sculpt), from 8pm to 9pm, beginning on July 10th.

“The Town’s athletic programs offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the court, improve their skills, and make new friends,” said

Councilwoman Walsh. “Playing basketball, badminton, and volleyball are the ideal way to have fun while staying active, and I encourage residents to take advantage of these Town programs.”

Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on July 6, 2023. The Basketball program is 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Badminton will feature two sessions for registrants to choose from. Oyster Bay Town Awarded $500K Grant To Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In celebration of Earth Day, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that New York State has awarded the Town of Oyster Bay over $490,000 in grant monies to expand electric vehicle charging stations in the town. The largest grant allocated for a single Town statewide, this award recognizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s vast commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

“The Town of Oyster Bay has been awarded nearly $500,000 in state grant funds to expand our electric vehicle charging infrastructure,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The Town has already installed multiple electric vehicle charging stations as we recognize the tremendous need for eco-

friendly transportation alternatives in our community, and we thank New York State for giving us the opportunity to continue these sustainable efforts at no additional cost to taxpayers.”

The funding comes as a part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program. It will allow the Town of Oyster Bay to install 22 Level 2 charging ports and one DCFC pedestal for public use as the demand for electric cars continues to grow each year.

“Thanks to state grant funding, we will expand electric vehicle recharging stations throughout the town without using property tax dollars.

From cheaper vehicle maintenance to zero exhaust emissions and eco-friendly production, many community benefits can be derived from supporting electric vehicles. We thank New York State for recognizing our prior efforts to offer EV stations and for awarding us these grant funds,” added Councilman Steve Labriola.

In 2019, Councilman Labriola led a quality of life initiative to install and operate electric vehicle charging stations on Town property for public use. Since then, the Town has surveyed properties and the public to identity the best locations for installation. Most recently, an EV charging station was constructed at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.

This is a social model day care program offering socialization and stimulation for individuals 60 and above with physical and/or memory impairment, generally Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. Activities include arts and crafts, live entertainment, group exercise, pet therapy, blackboard activities and small group activities based on cognitive level called “Motivate the Minds”. Clients are provided with assistance with everyday functinos such as ambulation and eating. A nutritious hot lunch is aslo provided.
