MEMORIAL DAY MAY 27, 2024

REMEMBER & HONOR

United States flag facts and handling etiquette

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design.

Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive, but the following guidelines can help private individuals interested in displaying their flags to do so in accordance with the law.

· Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times.

· When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left.

· State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag.

· During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S. flag should be to the observer’s left.

· The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days.

· When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed.

· The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

· The flag is often displayed at halfstaff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

· On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle.

· The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it.

· A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will have the resources to retire flags accordingly. Many will host annual flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

Mothers-In-Crisis Receive Local Support

Women’s Club of Farmingdale members recently met at Welfare Chair Rosemary Emigholz’ home to prepare donated handbags/diaper bags for donation to the Madonna Heights Homeless Shelter. The bags were filled with baby/toddler items, including pacifiers, sippy cups, small books, lotions, bibs, shampoo, diaper cream, etc. and with items for mothers, such as makeup, perfume, jewelry, hair ties, scarves, assorted toiletries, etc. Club members delivered the items to Madonna Heights on May 6 in time for Mother’s Day. Madonna Heights is a 24-hour facility that offers a wide range of therapeutic services, comprehensive mental health, and independent living support including shelter to mothers-incrisis and their young children.

On April 18, members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) met to sort and fill donated shopping bags with assorted food items to be distributed to district students for the April Passover school closing as

part of their continuing “Shut the Door on Hunger” Community Impact Program, which seeks to prevent food insecurity when schools are closed. This is the last collection for this school year. The WCF expects the program to begin again at the start of the new school year.

Luncheon Chair Ingrid Hernandez and her committee Margaret Barrett, Lynn Cahill, Eva Pearson and Cheryl Parisi beautifully decorated the community room at Allen Park for spring while serving a delicious lunch before the start of WCF May 10 General Meeting. The general membership voted and approved the new 2024-25 slate of officers who will be installed at the June meeting.

Superintendent of Schools Paul Defindini presented members with a very informative program on solutions to the ever-increasing high cost of college tuition. Students taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses can matriculate to earning enough credits to reduce tuition and even to start college at Sophomore

or Junior levels at considerable tuition savings. Also starting in September, new courses are available to students as an alternative to a 4-year college degree. Some of these courses include a 2-year medical assisting certification to work in hospital settings and certificates in cosmetology, welding, mechanics, etc. enabling students to find work right after graduation.

To everyone’s delight, Supt. Defindini brought “Daler,” his yellow lab canine companion. Defindini will be “raising” Daler, who is with him 24/7, for 18 months.

The GFWC NYS Convention was held in Albany May 2-5 and members were presented with certificates for award winning photographs and handmade crafts showcased at Cultural Arts in March. Also, certificates were presented to a number of members for their many years of community service.

The United States Navy Blue Angels, which headlined the very first Bethpage Air Show back in 2004, will return to Long Island to headline the 20th Anniversary show. This will be the Blue Angels’ 10th headliner performance for what has grown into one of the most respected air shows in the country.

Military performers joining the Blue Angels include the

United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the A-10C Thunderbolt II Demo Team, and the U.S. Navy F-35C Demo Team. Civilian performers Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; the world-famous Skytypers; Warbird Thunder Airshows; Farmingdale State College Flying Rams; Long Island’s own David Windmiller and the American Airpower Museum Warbirds.

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary show, organizers are giving away 30,000 commemorative U.S. Navy Blue Angels signed posters to fans attending the practice show on Friday, May 24th, and the weekend show on Saturday, May 25th and Sunday, May 26th.

The show will also feature other celebratory elements throughout the holiday weekend including a special, 15 ft x 20ft, anniversary cake weighing in at 1000 pounds, which fans will be able to enjoy on Friday, following an 11:00 am Jones Beach Press Conference.

What Families Can Do To Honor Fallen Veterans

The freedoms people living in the United States are afforded would not have been possible to provide if not for the brave efforts and undying commitment of the many individuals who have served in the nation’s armed forces. American military personnel have played vital roles in securing freedoms for their fellow citizens as well as individuals overseas. Each year on the final Monday in May, the United States commemorates military personnel who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. Those individuals made the ultimate sacrifice, and Memorial Day is a way to honor them and thank their families for their selfless acts. This Memorial Day, families can embrace various measures to honor fallen veterans.

• Visit a local veterans cemetery. The United Service Organization (USO) notes that most states have national veterans cemeteries. Though some veterans cemeteries are open only to family members of service personnel, others are open to the general public. Visiting a veterans cemetery is a great way to honor fallen military members and ensure the memory of their service and sacrifice is not forgotten on Memorial Day.

• Celebrate veterans over Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend is now synonymous with getaways and backyard barbecues. By taking time out during the weekend to honor fallen veterans, families can ensure the meaning behind the holiday is not lost in the midst of celebrations with family and friends. Take time out during a family barbecue to discuss a family member who served or, if traveling, make an effort to visit a veterans memorial along your travel route.

• Help raise funds for veterans organizations. Fun runs or community Memorial Day walks may benefit local veterans organizations that

help service members in need. Many service members may need help dealing with the deaths of friends or family members who died while serving in the armed forces, and veterans organizations may provide such help or direct funds to groups that do. That makes participation in events that benefit veterans organizations a great way to honor current military personnel and those who have served in the past, including those who died in service of their country.

• Teach youngsters about the role of the armed forces. There’s a lot competing for the attention of today’s young people, and that can

make it easy to overlook the very freedoms that make the United States such a unique country throughout world history. Parents and guardians can emphasize the role the armed forces play in procuring and protecting freedoms in the United States and emphasize the significance of the sacrifices of those who gave their lives to ensure a higher quality of life for all U.S. residents. Memorial Day commemorates military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces. There is much families can do to ensure those sacrifices are never forgotten or taken for granted.
